Has the actual meaning of the song been discussed? It quite clearly goes well with the whole theme of The 2nd Law - very similar to Unsustainable. It's a tragic song about the human race (ha ha, race) and how survival also means staying above the nature and literally defeating other races for us.

I feel like the Olympic committee didn't think this thing through. Sure it sounds like Olympics, but it's in a funny way also a part of the message. While the song should wake people to think of what the hell humans (as a species), our leaders and whole nations are doing, people actually think that it's about sports. I see this as a part of the tragic meaning behind the song. I hope Matt intended it like this.

Well, the Olympic Committee have got it into their heads that banners with the slogan "supporting the London 2012 Olympics" are dangerous to "the brand" of the games and are to be pursued with the full support of the law.

I'm taking a slightly more optimistic view of this one- it's post-disaster, slightly desperate sounding but optimistic.

The lyrics should have gone something like this:

Change everything you are

And everything you were

Your number has been called

Fights and battles have begun

Revenge will surely come

Your hard times are ahead

Best,

You've got to be the best

You've got to change the world

And use this chance to be heard

Your time is now

Change everything you are

And everything you were

Your number has been called

Fights and battles have begun

Revenge will surely come

Your hard times are ahead

Best,

You've got to be the best

You've got to change the world

And use this chance to be heard

Your time is now

Don't let yourself down

Don't let yourself go

Your last chance has arrived

Best,

You've got to be the best

You've got to change the world

And use this chance to be heard

Your time is now

Baby

It's a baby

But I'll plug it in

Yes, I'll plug it in

And it's no suprise

And it's time for changing

And it's cleansing everything

Whatever it takes

You're gonna lose

You're own game

And I'll forget your love

In virgin realities

Yes, I am tired

Tired of giving

It will crucify

My enemies

And I will replace

Replace the envying

Yeah, I've been in trouble

Baby

It's a baby

But I'll plug it in

Yes, I'll plug it in

And it's no suprise

And it's time for changing

And it's cleansing everything

Whatever it takes

You're gonna lose

You're own game

And I'll forget your love

In virgin realities

Yes, you're gonna lose

Right... :stunned:

To be honest, I think Matt was considering two sides while writing the lyrics - one side for the Olympics, the other for the album itself. That might explain the 'Vengeance' bit and all.

That's what I was thinking.

That just isn't possible... or is it?

Yeah, it's a bit weird trying to make the song valid for both purposes.

I wonder if the band feels guilty after seeing so many negative reviews from critics. While the song's great and all instrumentally, I think a lot of people were pointing out how bad the lyrics were. And I admit that I do think the song is a bit of a mess because of the weird (or maybe just uncommon) progression. (I wanted to say timing but I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to pwoper music terms.)

...Though I'm sure Matt just ignores any guilt he feels most of the time. :chuckle:

Thanks for sharing, I don't have a Twitter account so I didn't know Matt tweeted the link. It's a nice video but it irks me a little as to how it feels as if the edit of the song in the video seems a bit shabby...or maybe I'm just addicted/used to the full version now (including Prelude).

It's not at all weird imo. I'm sure a lot of Muse's songs have more than one meaning. It could even have several meanings.

I can't quite see why they would feel guilty about negative reviews. It's possible they might be disappointed. However if they were that worried about the reviews I think they would have played safer with their choice of song.

The first thing I thought when I heard the song was that I thought it didn't have a flow at all. I considered it a total mess

Similarly, I did so too.

Until I realize there's actually a certain sense of humor in the song itself. Then I realized the guys were most probably just having fun, rocking out, so I loosen up a bit and realized I enjoyed the song thoroughly.

Then I realized that the song was actually meant for the London Olympics; heck, probably the only one in their lifetime. Then I started wondering how in the world Matt came up with those lyrics.

But in the context of the Olympics and the album itself...? Nahh, I'd rather it if Muse actually just concentrated on one thing when it's meant to be submitted as a possible candidate for the Olympics theme song. :)

True, I guess.
