Are people REALLY that blind that they can't see how incredibly well the lyrics fit in the album's theme? It's a song about our struggle, perhaps against other nations or races. It's about how survival is equal to winning for us.

No one knows what the album's theme is yet or if it even has one so how can you say that these lyrics fit it?

The theme is "trying to make all song titles sound like cheap porn movies"

I have a reliable source, myself.

And also, even if they would 'fit' with the to-be-verified-theme the lyrics are still shit^^' at least some parts are just horrible. and I'm gonna win, yes I'm gonna win, and I'll light the fuse, and I'll never loose.

There was no 2-minute speech in the trailer, none of the track names seems to be Unsustainable, there were no energy-themed images in the trailer and there are absolutely no threads discussing entropy and the second law of thermodynamics (hint: the album name) with hundreds of posts.

"B-BUT WE D-DON'T KNOW EVERYTHING"

But was Supermassive Black Hole political? Similarly for Guiding Light.

Okay. What was the theme of 'Absolution' then? The album title suggests it would be about some form of forgiveness or redemption. The track name 'Sing For Absolution' also points towards this. However, the album as a whole doesn't have any particularly clear theme that has anything to do with the title. Point is, Muse are always quite loose with their 'themes'.

Anyway, even if the song is tied to the album's 'theme', the lyrics are still shit. Connecting them to this 'theme' doesn't make them any less cringe-worthy.

Yes, this really ties in to survival and winning...

:erm:

The theme of one song pertains the the "2nd law" title. And is, more than likely, where the title comes from anyways. We have no idea if the others do.

I don't feel like there's ever been a real "theme" to their albums - even when the band themselves said there was, such on TR. How many songs really tied in closely to the theme?

Honestly, and it's just my opinion, I am happy about that. The last thing I want is another crappy album where quality is sacrficed to try and shoe-horn things into a 'theme.'

You could argue this is what happened with Survival and the Olympics...

I will admit I like the cheesy lyrics MUCH better when I mentally apply them to a situation where they are being sung about someone pushing for survival LITERALLY in the world, and putting themselves first. Apocalyptic setting style. Zombies optional.

But seriously, a "the world imploded, and I will do whatever I need to to survive."

Still cheesy, but MUCH more appealing to me.

I still have enough faith in Matt to believe he probably did mean that to some extent, as well. Maybe not quite as intense as I've depicted, but to some degree. Or it's entirely possible I've been reading "undertones" and "subtext" into Muse songs for years, and it's all been in my head. Then again, maybe that defines good art.

The sad fact is, without the opening piano/chorus, and some of the lyrics (really, a lot of them could be more tolerable if it didn't open with the "race" part, and he yelled anything other than "win" at the end...) but, avoiding that, most of the song is #@%$ing amazing.

Unfortunately, first impressions being what they are, the intro alone is putting people completely off. I admit that that's why it took me so long to even listen to it again, and why I hated it so much at first, still.

Now I absolutely adore most of the song, but you have to push so hard through that intro (not Prelude... that was awesome and sad it's not on the actual song.)

The lyrics seem shittier than they really are when you think that they're about sports or the Olympics. Most musers here seem to do this.

Not to pick on you but the song IS about sports/The Olympics, the band have literally stated that this is the case.
