I think the "upbeat" mood of Reapers aims to deliver those feelings of euphoria, self-elation, sublime, or downright terror, which explode in a soldier's soul in the middle of a battle or an incoming assault.

That would be cool as well as unsettling.

As inspired by alibros... here is my wanky piano arrangement of Reapers

Now to learn how to play it :(

Neat! Apparently this is the only way I will get to hear anything close to the song, as it seems there's a lockdown on all the audio of the bootleg videos... can't find a single one with audio now. D:

Logging on after a long time (since the Resistance Tour thereabouts) to agree with this.

We've had only two tracks from the album, but when listening to them, I keep thinking that 1) this appears to be concept album per the 'official' description from Matt, and if so, then 2) each track is told from the POV of the person in the story at that point in time.

Meaning that Psycho represents the drill sgt. in the process of brainwashing the recruits into good soldiers/drones, while Reapers appears to be the recently-brainwashed drone accepting his fate.

What happens to the 'drone' here is tragic. But if the story is being told from various players within they story while events are happening, the players are not going to reflect on the overall the tragedy, they're voicing their feelings about what they're experiencing as it is happening. And someone recruited into a military org to become a 'psycho killer drone' isn't going to feel bad about their fate once the training (brainwashing here) is complete...the brainwashed drone is going to embrace their fate. They're feeling good. They think what they're going to be doing is triumphant. Glorious.

Thus the 'upbeat' sound of the chorus (though I personally think the upbeat sound is tinged with something darker...but that might be the biblical/military language/imagery used in the lyrics).

The drone doesn't realize that things aren't so triumphant and glorious until later, when they've actually had experience in battle or spent years under an oppressive regime. I imagine that tracks when the drone is shaking off the brainwashing won't be so 'happy', for lack of a better word.

I could get into a whole other spiel on how Psycho reflects the relentless/monotonous acts that make up the whole 'breaking down to build up' part of basic training...but that's for that thread.

Or the rest of the songs could be variations of hearts/minds/souls with no connection to the early songs from the album.

Bit I like Reapers. I like it a lot.

Cheers! Yeah I scored this in Sibelius and then exported to MIDI. Will post the sheets soon when I clean them up a bit more.
