Citizen Erased 01
jesus, reading these comments I thought I was going to hate it, but on first listen it sounds quite good. I swear that Matt said this was the darkest song on the album??? Either I'm wrong or they did the fastest 180 on the planet. But not bad to be honest, might be a grower

Citizen Erased 01
ah yeah of course, thanks. But on the other hand, coming straight after Psycho I would have expected something a bit more gritty...
heyjackk
i really like the chorus melody, as poppy as it is
jonisdead
I think Matt said that the darkest song on the album was The Handler. During today's interview he changed that to Defector.
Tesseract
During today's interview he changed that to Defector. In other words, Matt rarely knows what he's talking about. I haven't listened to this yet but all the people I know that we're at the gig lastnight have said that the recording doesn't get close to doing the song justice, particularly the chorus which they've all said was much heavier than it comes across. So I haven't decided if I'll listen to the leak yet.
-FutureStar-
Came here to snigger at the people moaning. As I said on the other thread, sounds like a BHaR b-side and I'm really happy with it.

rimbir
Am I the only one who's really enjoying this? I like it a lot more than Psycho and Dead Inside at least. Edit: Also the lyrics seem pretty bad. Is he saying "before they eat my soul" becore the chorus? Edited May 10, 2015 by rimbir
Bumpypotato
Am I the only one who's really enjoying this? I like it a lot more than Psycho and Dead Inside at least. Right there with you. It's very reminiscent of BH&R, which is the album that got me into Muse in the first place.
-FutureStar-
I'm glad it's not outright hate on here like the last few tracks... It really is a nice song.
CoolFunkMan
I've only heard bits of the song (as I don't want to spoil it for the album), but I've really liked what I've heard so far. It really has a BH&R vibe to it, which isn't a bad thing. As for it being "dark". It could still be dark lyrically, although I can't say for sure, as we haven't got all the lyrics cleared up yet. However, could the softer style of the song be a representation of the protagonists apathy? Dead Inside and Mercy are softer when he's feeling apathetic and, well... dead inside. When we get the Drill Instructors perspective in Psycho, the song is heavy because he's one of these "dark" forces that's manipulating the protagonist. Reapers is sort of a blend of both styles, so as the protagonist gets more manipulated, maybe songs from his perspective get heavier? That, or I've just come up with an insane theory... lens
It's definitely a grower. First thought was "what did you do to Starlight?" But after listening in detail with headphones, it sounds quite big and uplifting.

Bumpypotato
The drumming's pretty great on this. I had been pretty underwhelmed from what we've heard so far, so it's honestly a relief.

Edit: Also the lyrics seem pretty bad. Is he saying "before they eat my soul" becore the chorus? No, i honestly love the song. I like it better than Dead Inside already. and i also loved Dead Inside, but has to be my least fav song of the songs i've heard so far.
Jobby
Only just started listening to this but it sounds like Domino by Jessie J to me.
heyjackk
decided to have a go at the lyrics and this is all i could get from about 3 or 4 listens, matt mumbles a lot of the words in the verses Help me I've fallen on the inside I tried to change the game I tried to give ?the truth? Now I have to let it go though They seem to run the show ?All the ghosts that ? - could be - ? goes to show ? Before they eat my soul Mercy Mercy Show me Mercy From the powers that be Show me Mercy Time to let me live A thousand ? Inside the ? Hypnotized by the ?purple tears? (this just can't be right... surely...) ??? And try to bring me down Goes to show what just isn't found (not sure about the goes to show bit) Mercy Mercy Show me mercy From the powers that be Show me mercy It's time to let me live Show me mercy From ??? Show me mercy please Heal/help me ? From the inside Got to let it go Before they devour my soul Show me mercy From the powers that be Show me mercy From powers that be Show me mercy From the ? machines (definitely sings something different here) Show me mercy From the powers that be yeah
MAurelia
I really like the song. In my opinion, 'Drones' will be definitely better than the 2nd Law.
zomuse
Only just started listening to this but it sounds like Domino by Jessie J to me. I can hear it. Something about the structure/melody/rhythm makes it fit right into what's currently on the radio. Like, Dead Inside is pop but this is super drone pop.
