I really hope they play it, but I don't have expectations either. Honestly I'm just excited to be seeing them one last time before they take a break from touring for a few years

I'm hopeful too  I won't be too disappointed if we don't have any surprises though, I'm just glad to be seeing them with all the other amazing bands at OSL.

Speaking of which, if you have a 3-day pass, make time to see Foster The People on Friday. Seriously.

I am training myself to not have setlist expectations after the lesson learned at Sacramento.

I do wish the boys will still be on their streak of being on fire, in top form. Even UD is enjoyable if done with passion. If they even play Bliss / CE as if they'd rather be somewhere else then I will not quite 'die happily'.

I'd love to discover other bands at OSL, like finding a gem like Muse in 2000. I like rich, melodious, energetic rock. Great voices. Would love more recommendations.

I wish I had a 3 day pass. I was planning on it but sudden complications made it impossible to afford it. I'm still happy single day passes came to see Muse :awesome:

Will do! I don't have that many artists on my to-see list but Foster The People are on there. Speaking of which, here's my schedule: http://myscheduler.sfoutsidelands.com/schedule.html?c=rd800ny8

Obviously I'm not going to see Starfucker, Vetiver or The Roots like it says in there, but I wish I could. :$

I don't know who to see from 12pm-3pm on Friday and Sunday so let me know if you have any recommendations ;)

Out of curiosity is anyone planning on bringing gifts for Muse? Even to throw on stage or something? I was thinking about it but I'd rather worry about OSL logistics than what to get Matt at the moment. I don't even have a ride/place to stay at confirmed

Alright guys I'll make a list of some must-see bands!

Yeah, I learned that after my first Muse gig as well. You enjoy it more when you don't think about the setlist.

Ehh I never like UD live

OMG OK it's melon's bands recommendation time :chuckle: Let me go make a list.

I wish I had a 3 day pass. I was planning on it but sudden complications made it impossible to afford it. I'm still happy single day passes came to see Muse :awesome:

Aww sorry :( Yeah Muse day will be awesome.

Will do! I don't have that many artists on my to-see list but Foster The People are on there. Speaking of which, here's my schedule: http://myscheduler.sfoutsidelands.com/schedule.html?c=rd800ny8

Goooood :yesey: I've seen FTP twice, I absolutely adore them.

Yay I love giving recommendations!

Nah, I'm not bringing anything.

I'll set this up in order of day and slot time :) I'll only recommend the bands I have a good knowledge of in terms of live performances.

Friday:

The Joy Formidable

I love this band, they seem like so much fun and their debut album The Big Roar is fantastic. They have a big sound for a 3 piece band, sound familiar? :chuckle:

(song starts at 0:55 if you want to skip the intro)

Phantogram

Very cool sound from this 2 piece band, their album Eyelid Movies is really worth a listen.

Foster The People

I CANNOT EXPRESS MY LOVE FOR THIS BAND ENOUGH. These guys are a must-see, DO NOT miss their set. They're on their way to becoming a household name, and they only just released their first album, which is called Torches. I've seen them twice and will be seeing them 3 more times in the coming months. Go. See them.

The Shins

James Mercer has a beautiful voice

Saturday:

The Vaccines

If you're not planning on staying on the Muse barrier all day, go and see this band. I'm not too familiar with them yet, but I've only heard great things about their live shows and they're becoming very popular.

Starfucker (STRFKR)

Fun band! Excited to see them.

Arctic Monkeys

A must-see. Hopefully you've heard of them?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDhCXubkbd0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLsBJPlGIDU

The Black Keys

GO SEE THEM.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpaPBCBjSVc&ob=av2e (I love this video hahaha)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGmGAy_4iEs

Muse, lol.

Sunday:

Grouplove

This band is making it's way up, they don't even have an album out yet and they're already so popular!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPvONCgWOmk

!!!

These guys seem hilarious.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3zrAynlU3o

Little Dragon

Gorgeous music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yedD4JsZyT0

Wye Oak

I'm bummed that their slot conflicts with Little Dragon :(

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBOU0dafnlA

Beirut

I so wish they had been opening for Arcade Fire :supersad:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLdCoVnESsY

Arcade Fire

My favorite band, next to Muse. Please go see them, you won't be sorry. Their first album, Funeral, is my favorite album of all time. I've seen them twice and they made me cry.

No problem! Some of these bands will probably hit Muse-popularity status one day, and we'll have seen them when they're still young and crazy :awesome::chuckle:

We'll see if Haley (agenthal) stops by in this thread soon, she could probably make an even better list.

Oh yeah! We need to figure something out. It'd be cool if we could all go out for food or something the night before the fest on the 11th in San Fran. Or maybe we could look at each other's schedules and find a time we're all free, if it exists :chuckle:

I'll be there by wednesday so I'm down to hang out.

Whoops, so I meant to post this as the second video for The Joy Formidable:

Oh and here are some fun facts about certain bands :)

Fun Facts

The Joy Formidable are a band from Wales, and Dave Grohl (drummer of Nirvana, frontman of Foo Fighters) called their song Whirring the best song of the year so far.

Foster The People...well, if you're female, you will enjoy watching them :eyebrows: The entire band is attractive, I actually got more nervous when I met them than when I met Muse because of this :chuckle:

James Mercer of The Shins did a side project called Broken Bells with the drummer of Danger Mouse last year. I saw them live and they were amazing

Broken Bells (not playing at OSL, but still!)

Tom Kirk does the live visuals for The Black Keys :awesome: Support Kirk! See them before Muse, they're on the same stage!

Grouplove has an amazing story - the vocalists, Hannah and Christian, fell in love at first sight. They spontaneously traveled to Greece together within a week of meeting each other, where they met the other 3 band members. They wrote music together while on vacation, and decided to move to LA where they recorded an EP. It's like a movie plot or something, lol. Hear them tell their story here:

Little Dragon collaborated with the band Gorillaz on their album Plastic Beach. Here's one of the songs:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nX-A061-9k

Zach Condon of Beirut wrote Gulag Orkestar (the song I linked in my rec list) when he was just 17. Crazy talented!

Arcade Fire are a Canadian/American band - they just won a Grammy for Best Album of the Year (for their album The Suburbs), which was considered the biggest upset of this year's awards because they beat Eminem and Lady Gaga  Watch their reactions here, so amazing:

(Not gunna lie, I cried when they won. Hahaha)

I'll be there by wednesday so I'm down to hang out.

I'm there by Thurs night (that is if I find a ride). If we do something on Friday or Sunday, I'm down.

I'm posting in this thread way too much, but I just wanted to share the forecast for Golden Gate Park!

oslweather.jpg

haha I get cold really easily so I'm still bringing a coat. at least it'll be nice and sunny :D but I probably won't bake if I'm staying at the barrier all day

one of the tags for this thread is "bring baby wipes"......for the port-a-potties, I'm assuming? :$ GUHH

I'm sad I won't get to see Arcade Fire, as they're one of the bands I want to see live the most. I've added them to my list of "bands (non-Muse) I must see when they come to my area". I think I have about 3.

Oh yeah, I got paper for the Space Dementia sign.

I was looking for what you can bring or should bring for an all day thing (ie can you bring a 2 litre bottle size of ice to have as ice water, or any snacks?) but can't find any link on the site.

What's sensible to bring if I don't plan to be at barrier all day (would love to but probably die of something by 8pm) to be comfortable? Like small thing to sit on?

Dressing will be tricky - from hot sun to freezing fog!

Also found this guide to the music (but considering they cite Black Holes and Revelation for Muse - this guide is for super casual fans - which I am for all these other bands!)

dude I have those exact same questions. yay newbs

festival veterans, please lend some tips!!!!!

I emailed OSL about bringing snacks and they responded quite swiftly:

Thank you for your interest in Outside Lands and for getting in touch. You will be allowed to bring in small snacks but excess amounts of food will not be allowed into the festival.

I'm definitely bringing some snacks and things to replace meals but WHAT IF I NEED TO USE THE RESTROOM???????

You should email them about ice. I'm gonna freeze so I'm more than fine with lukewarm water :D

I can't help you with any of these things, I'm new to festivals myself

Those recommendations are kinda weird haha, and not to discredit it but I don't think it's the best list to follow for Muse fans. That is, if you guys like more alternative rock stuff.

agreed. I've never EVER liked tune-yards :|

I'm just confused about the bands that are listed and the ones that aren't :erm: Like, I don't understand why they would list Best Coast and not The Joy Formidable. I've seen Best Coast, it was one of the most boring shows I've ever been to. The Joy Formidable's album is LOADS better, and their live videos look like so much fun.

What about The Shins? And why the hell are The Greyboy Allstars and Christina Perri on the Saturday list when Arctic Monkeys, Muse, and The Black Keys aren't? :wtf: I'm especially confused that Arcade Fire aren't on the Sunday list either :indiff:

not coming to this one and not a festie veteran either but I can highly recommend emergency foil blankets for keeping warm while packing *light*! I would have thought ice would be considered too dangerous? But maybe if you can time it so that it's mostly melted when you're going in that would keep it cool for an hour

I've seen Best Coast, too and they WERE boring! and each song was like 2 minutes long. I can't imagine them still touring and releasing albums in five years. Mercury News were prolly trying to introduce readers to new, indie bands. not so much a guide for must-see bands.

I was thinking of bringing one. I've never actually opened one up but I have plenty from those elementary school emergency kits :p thanks for the tip!

The songs are just too short to really get into for me, and I hate to say this, but they all began to sound the same after a while. A lot of the bands they listed aren't new though, like Big Audio Dynamite. Weird.

I think if I had a foil blanket I would just end up messing around with it haha

My suggestion is if you're doing a Space Dementia sign, to get it done, take a picture of it, and tweet it to all the guys. They'll decide on the setlist the night before the concert, so a sign held up at the concert won't make much difference. we can pretend that asking ahead of time might.
