Soul_Flux
Wish Mercy had been more like this on the record
frozenbanana
The pre-chorus build and chorus harmonies still elevate this song beyond the mundane and crap for me. It's not a classic, but I like it.
Mattestro
I still like it, a lot
serpentsatellite
Yeah, I'm still pretty obsessed with it. Sounds great live, too.
Redwingsrock
Mat's delivery on "killing machines" is pretty much amazing.
MalvaBlanco
Great bassline (again), but the song has done the opposite of growing on me... it's shrunk on me? It's slightly too bland, and out of place on the album (and the lyrics don't fit the vibe of the music at all.)
Gareeh
Yep I love it. It's a heavier Starlight, what's not to love?
FabriPav
Literally everything.
matthijs
It's probably one of the most bland songs on the album writing-wise.
topo_musero
I think it's the worst song in the album. I don't know, it's something we've heard from Muse dozens of times. Not a bad song, but it's... meh.
manualex
Yep I love it. It's a heavier Starlight, what's not to love? I dont like the chorus.
JessicaSarahS
I do like it a bit more than Starlight. The lyrics are super paranoid and fun. But the music is pretty bland.
googoogee
Yep I love it. It's a heavier Starlight, what's not to love? The part around 2:25 where Matt gives his best Falsetto probably since Bliss at Earls Court 2004. Ugh.
FabriPav
The part around 2:25 where Matt gives his best Falsetto probably since Bliss at Earls Court 2004. Ugh. That's actually Bono from U2, not Matt.

Redwingsrock
That's actually Bono from U2, not Matt. You say that like it's a bad thing....which I can only assume, because most of the posts I've seen you make have been anything but positive. Bono is/was a great singer. Matt's chest voice sounds like Bono....that's not going to change whether you like it or not. Mat is a much better singer now than he was in the early days. Much less whiny. MartianSpaghettiRider
Listening to the whole album, Mercy is the track I find the weakest of them all. It's not bad at all, and the pre-chorus/chorus section is powerful, but the whole thing is not particularly original or engaging enough to make you want to listen to it again after you arrive at the end of the album, actually. Absolute Eb
Listening to the whole album, Mercy is the track I find the weakest of them all. It's not bad at all, and the pre-chorus/chorus section is powerful, but the whole thing is not particularly original or engaging enough to make you want to listen to it again after you arrive at the end of the album, actually. I kind of agree with this...Another reason I'm thinking this will be the first song I skip is that the lyrics are very dark which contrasts with the bright Starlight-like instrumentation and melody....if I had only heard the instruments I would've expected it to be more like "Glory!" Instead of "Mercy!" Also, I find that this one advances the story of the album the least. I doubt I would miss it if it wasn't there.... I guess my big disclaimer is that I haven't listened to anything past Defector, but from what I've read in other reviews the music seem to at least reflect the lyrics in the other songs. MancMuse
I really like this track in the same way I like Resistance. I think it will be great live as it looked brilliant on the R1 big weekend broadcast.
Old Man Pigeon
Out of nowhere, I now don't mind this song! It could do with a solo or something though

aikiclo
I just saw the preview Muse posted for the Mercy video. The mix sounds different, I can hear more clearly the synth arpeggios, the guitar volume is lower and definitely less saturated and Matt's voice sounds a little different. Perhaps they realized what an atrocious mix they made and they'll update the song. They sort of did this with Psycho, the first time I downloaded in iTunes it had the guitar strum at the beginning and now it starts right away at the riff. Did anybody else noticed this or am I imagining things?

Unidentifiable
Yep I love it. It's a heavier Starlight, what's not to love? One thing is that Starlight is more musically complex than Mercy.
manualex
One thing is that Starlight is more musically complex than Mercy. And it's more relatable than Mercy.
