6ixty_6ix
went to buy a china today, had the range of £100 tested absoutly loads of them. First of all was the PST3 - ( no more should be said ) PST5 - liked it but wasn't enough...ooomph then i expected it to have AAX - LOVED IT, loud aggressive, perfect tone Wuhan - suprsingly good for the price, £55 18" wasnt really brilliant though Zildjian A Custom - was brillaint but to much (£165) Pasite RUDE - great china, great tone but something about it didn't really give it away for me i decided in the end to go for the AAX, a snip at £90 including a free boom stand so im chuffed:D

Ash
Does Dom use 13" hats? All the sound samples I've listened to I really prefer them, the chick sounds nicer to me and and the open sounds much lovelier than 14"s. Hmm.

ADAM
what does hit in the verses of supermassive blackhole to make that shaker effect? live, he hits the rim of his bass drum. but its not mic'd up - so it must be a backing track....for the second part of the verse he uses the hats. If you wanna play it JUST like him - then its on the rim of the bass drum. if you wanna get a NOISE out of the drums then stay on the hats! lol

addyjoe
Yeah, he said he uses a trigger for a few things in SBH, thats one of them
ADAM
Actually its a trigger attached to the rim of his bass drum? (what IS a trigger? something to do with backing tracks? in which case i was technically right )
El Zilcho
(what IS a trigger? something to do with backing tracks? in which case i was technically right ) A trigger is something that sets off a certain device when it's activated, for example a motion detector triggers a light to go on when you walk into it. So every time Dom hits that thing, it results in that shaker-y sound playing.
Niles
It's a practice pad with electronics inside it that issues a midi signal to a controller every time it senses being struck and the controller executes whatever function it's programmed to do. An electronic kit is composed of trigger pads. This video shows how they work: http://www.drummerworld.com/Videos/AkiraJimbosint.html
lpdrummer
Ribbon Crasher thats mounted above his bass drum.
richiejazz
What does he trigger in sbh??? + dont think he uses his ribbon crasher...? Does anyone know exactly what he plays? I get the impression (unless he is triggering something!) that doms live drums on sbh are more for show than anything else. That backing track/drum machine is such an integral part of the song and for a backing track is very loud in the mix. Ok the live drums underline the song nicely - but is he actually doing much live? Niles
Dom drums SBH live, there is no backing track. If there are synth drums used in a performance I haven't seen then they are triggered with a module attached to the acoustic drums (different to the device I described above). ADAM
well there we have it then. He has a trigger (an electronic drum pad) close to the rim of his bass drum. He hits that - it gives off a shaker effect. He then continues to the hats in the later part of the verse. He plays it all live - just that bit is basically through a digital kit. Yeah?
