Hat
The "Brainwashing our children to be mean" is one of my favorite lines from the album... Well this is awkward.

Saint Rockwell
I wonder if the line "policies have risen up" was intended to be a pun, because it was the first thing I noticed and I really like it pretty clever for Muse lyrics anyway Just because you notice it first doesn't make it a pun... Museic Syndrome
I'd say it's the worst of the album Why? I really don't get the hate for it, it's just realistic - people of today are mean and brainwashed. And really, the worst? Worse than "fuse helium 3" and "stellar clouds of gas" ? And all of Survival? jessbnd
Mean just sounds so immature to me. But it's not the worst by far. Same here. I couldn't even believe at first that it is actually "mean". But... oh well... Now sometimes I smile when I hear and sing this part. And what is so wrong about fuse helium 3? FabriPav
I am not trying to be pretentous or anything but I really don't get the fuss about "mean"... It's a stupid word in that context, too predictable and basically childish.
Jobby
I am not trying to be pretentous or anything but I really don't get the fuss about "mean"... It sounds immature, like something a child would say.
CarrieB
It sounds immature, like something a child would say. Hmm I haven't thought about it in that way. I suppose I may have a different perspective as I am not looking to Matt to represent maturity. That doesn't mean I don't think he is mature, just that I don't find it important. But in any case, even if it is an immature word which hadn't occurred to me, I think, in context, it works. It is referring to the behaviour of children afterall. I like it. Jobby
It sounds stupid after "Greatness dies, unsung and lost, invisible to history". Pretty much. The use of 'mean' sticks out like a soar thumb when compared to the grandness of the rest of the lyrics.
FabriPav
Pretty much. The use of 'mean' sticks out like a soar thumb when compared to the grandness of the rest of the lyrics. Overall the lyrics are still really good though. If only he used "deceive" instead of "be mean"

Hat
Whenever I read this thread and the discussions about the word "mean", I just imagine the riots in the UK a while back. "There are reports coming in from all over the UK about people being mean to each other."
Tacblack
I like "fuse helium-3." In the song it doesn't really sound very bad. "Mean" could have been replaced with many different words and that's why it irks. Also "stellar clouds of gas" is pretty laughable. Actually it's just the "gas" part. Probably the worst on the album. I honestly don't mind the Survival lyrics. A bit cheesy but they sound find in terms of the song.
