LyraSilvertongue
really? who's enforcing this rule? Well, no-one. I'm just making the point that if some racist jokes are not ok, then that should apply to all racist jokes.
L.
really? who's enforcing this rule? I don't know I personally love Dylan Moran's jokes about the French... they makes laugh not offended!
LyraSilvertongue
Hardly the first AIDS joke in music... you might find it distasteful but there's no need to get dramatic about it. I think it was the 'we'd rather see them dead' comment people are more offended by.
beeSides
I don't know I personally love Dylan Moran's jokes about the French... they makes laugh not offended! which is why i can send you craig ferguson clips mocking the french, gays, german porn, or whatever and we have laughs and are happy course craig > frankie

CarrieB
Sorry, but what has that got to do with anything? By that logic, if I was bullied by someone or a group of people, if I behaved towards them in the same way, I'm in the right while they are in the wrong? No no one's in the right in that situation. The reason that people have to be protected from prejudice is because they have been oppressed and are still oppressed at some level. That doesn't make it right if they discriminate against others, but to say, oh okay lets allow everyone to suffer prejudice so it's fair isn't really a solution as it allows inequalities to continue. And for those who have been doing the oppression to cry, oh it's not fair for others to get protection if we aren't receiving the same protection is a bit rich really. If you want equality, then everyone must be treated equally, the actions of previous generations are therefore irrelevant, otherwise it's just a reversal of who was oppressed during those generations. You're seeing it too simplistically. It's not a level playing field. The point is that the inequalities are still there. Ethnic minorities are still the poorest in this country, there is still sexual inequality and gay people are still stigmatised, bullied at school and seen as lesser than straight people. In some other countries they are still given life imprisonment or even the death penalty, but they are generally denied equal rights. If there was a huge reversal and everything was turned on it's head, that would need addressing, but that is very unlikely.

If you're thinking in minorities, then you are automatically a racist, homophobe, sexist and so on. An individual is an individual and want to be treated as such. Oddly enough, people have no issue with positive discrimination, that's completely acceptable. Nobody has picked on the "The sound of angry Devon" quote by Phil Jupitus during that episode, still ultimately discriminating.

You have to think of people as social groups if shared problems are to be addressed. It's stupid to ignore discrimination for the sake of supporting individualism and anyway people work as groups to address these problems that's why there are feminist groups, LGBT groups etc. Anyway can't be bothered to argue with you any more! haze015
Complete rubbish! You're twisting what I've said. As if you've never done that! I'm putting all this in a different light for you. Everybody is part of a minority of some kind at the end of the day, so it's all pointless and 99% of comedy just wouldn't be possible if you applied such rules to all possible minorities and no matter you say, it's always possible to offend anyone. Going on about power and all the rest is only seeing the world from where you are, not as a whole.

CarrieB
Yep. The paper made it sound a lot worse than it was. No surprise there Yeah we're all being flippant and blase and talking about everything else under the sun on this thread, but in all honesty, speaking for myself, I honestly don't know if I could bear it, if something happened to them I mean, which makes the reaction to this newspaper story understandable. I don't care if I get pisstake for saying that! But I don't want to start a discussion on it. Just thought it needed saying since this thread is hanging around. Gemsy
I think Noel Fielding recognised that he'd maybe gone too far, he said something like, 'I'm just getting the laughs in before Frankie makes another AIDS joke.'
