Starlight, Invincible and Exo-Politics

 I am going to kill all of you.

Yeah, but this is my second favourite of their albums behind Abso. My favourite tracks from it would be Invincible and City Of Delusion.

Come on, if you hate Invincible, you've got to at least acknowledge that Matt hits the high A in his chest voice when he says "DUUURRRing." The only other time I've seen him do that in an album song is in Hyper Music when he yells "I don't love you!" That is one hard note to hit considering Matt's range. I'd know, I have an identical range to Matt.

Invincible and Starlight seem better now than when BH&R was released. Although that's primarily due to comparison with the horrors of NSC, Guiding Light, and Soaked...

It's a slightly patchy album, especially following their two most consistent ones, but it has a sense of fun and exploration about it! And I personally (as an old school fan) rank Take A Bow, Supermassive Black Hole, Map Of The Problematique, City Of Delusion, Hoodoo, and Knights Of Cydonia along with their very best work, ensuring that it's a very good album. If it weren't for a butchered Assassin, a lacklustre Exo Politics, and the combination of Starlight and Invincible sowing the seeds for the ever more clichéd line of ballads which were to start cropping up, it might have even been up there with OOS and Absolution. Well... almost.

Absolution is definitely not consistent.

I'd argue that Origin was consistent. I think all the tracks are amazingly strong and I feel it flows quite well. It's the only Muse album i'll listen to from beginning to end. I don't think Absolution is too consistent, but that's because 3 of the final four tracks just don't fit the album. The band stated at the time that these tracks were meant to be a hint about the band's future musical developments, rather than remaining consistent with the rest of the album. I personally skip over them now, with the exception of Endlessly, which i've thrown into a few playlists.

Anyway, getting back on topic, I still love BH&R. It's as crazy as Origin, though definitely a little more cheesy. When I think of how the bands have gone about writing their last four albums, I still consider Origin and BH&R as the most daring and exciting albums, with Absolution and The Resistance being the safe re-treads of the albums they followed up. Take A Bow, Starlight, Supermassive, MotP, Assassin, Hoodoo and Knights are all brilliant tracks. Staples in any of Muse playlists.

It's their worst album.

:yesey:

Absolution is about as consistent as a best of album.

I'd like to hear MOTP re-recorded, and done properly so it does something.

I'd be up for that, as I loathe the current version. It and Supermassive make me gag the most.

How is TR a retread of BHaR?

I have no idea in all of time and space and time and the universe and the stars and cows and stiff how you could think that it is worse than the resistance... don't be so silly all the time.

I am truly sorry that that is how you feel, however, it is worse than The Resistance.

Take a Bow: I love headbangin' Muse songs like this.

Starlight: This is the first Muse song I heard,I didn't really like it, but it's grown on me. Such a stark difference from TaB.

Supermassive Black Hole: One of my aunt's faves. I think it goes well with Starlight.

Map of the Problematique: Overall great song, some of my top 10 lyrics in there

Soldiers Poem: At first I was at odds with this song.

Invincible: A bit cheesy, but who doesn't love a slice of cheese now and then?

Assassin: A theme song for one of my books, I like it a lot.

Exo-Politics: One of my personal faves,it gets stuck in my head a lot.

City of Delusion: An early fave even before I got the album.

Hoodoo: Has some serious depth. A great track.

Knights of Cydonia: This song motivates me,stokes the fire if you will.

How is TR a retread of BHaR?

It sounds as if it could be the second half of a BH&R double album. It has that more colourful Muse vibe, it's musically all over the place, and compared the BH&R it's not really a daring album. Uprising wreaks of a Starlight/Supermassive/Knights mash up. Undisclosed Desires is a more commercialised Supermassive. Guiding Light, at the heart of the album, is Invincible part two.

I guess you could argue that its more a re-tread of their entire career, but it still has that BH&R polish and cheesyness to it. It

I find TR to be much more epic and grand than BHaR. They both jump genres a ton but not the same genres. I don't see any of those songs in Uprising at all. I wouldn't call UD a more commercialized SMBH. UD is a different genre, though it does have similar structure and is also poppy. I'll give you Guiding Light as very similar to Invincible, but that's the only retread of BHaR I can see

  • 3 weeks later...

I will defend this album from haters until I die. Okay, now that the overdramatic part is over... I really really love BHaR. It's the album that started my Muse fandom, and that alone means I will always think fondly of it. I love the versatiliy, the different styles that somehow work as a whole. And that's what marks the big difference between it and TR to me: I feel BHaR just... flows well as an album, and even though there are so many influences and styles it all fits together and sounds Muse-y at all times, whereas TR almost feels like a compilation of random songs.

As for each song:

Take a Bow:

Simply one of Muse's best songs. I'm gutted I'll probably never see it live. I love the buildup and the perfect mix of electronica / classical / rock.

Starlight

I think the hate isn't justified. Sure, it's poppy, but it means a lot to me personally and I just find it very beautiful. It's one of my favorite Muse songs.

SMBH

Actually the song that got me into buying the album and thus into Muse (long before Twilight, thank you very much). A good example of the "new influences but still Muse" feeling I mentioned before.

MotP

Muse doing electro the right way (take notes, UD). One of the best songs on the album.

Soldier's Poem

Beautiful, but perhaps a bit out of place. Wouldn't have minded if it hadn't made the album.

Invincible

Love the solo and the last chorus. Doesn't feel too cheesy for me.

Assassin

I heard the GOB edit after the album version and I do prefer it, but it's still a solid song with a kickass riff.

Exo-Politics

Again, don't get the hate. Sure it's nothing too exciting or innovative, but it's catchy and I love the solo bit between the first chorus and second verse.

City of Delusion

Used to be one of my favorites on the album. My love for it has gone back a little, but it's still a really good song.

Hoodoo

It took me 3 years to appreciate this song, but now I love this perfect mix of rock, latin sounds and classical music. And the lyrics are of course fantastic.

KoC

Didn't really care for it for a long time, but the breakdown / final riff are enough to make you shut up, and it's awesome live.

TaB: Very good mixture of styles. Takes a bit too long to climax, but once it does it's worth the wait.

Starlight: Not on my all-time top-20 Muse songs but I like hearing it every now and then (unless I'm in a headbanging mood :)). Nice emotion in lyrics and vocals.

SMBH: A bit experimental, yet radio-friendly, kinda worn out by now but still a cool song.

MotP: One of the best tracks on the album. Love everything about it.

SP: As a standalone song, I really don't like it at all, but it works as a nice mid-album interlude with its barely 2 mins length. Transition from MotP to it isn't very good though - having some USoE-type song between them (and therefore having a 12 track album) would've been awesome.

Invincible: Excellent love song. Great buildup to a really cool solo and an epic last chorus (the "epicness" is a bit smothered on the studio version, but it rocks live).

Assassin: Not the most original song on the album, but without it BHaR would be totally submerged into softness. It's BHaR's stockholm syndrome. Oh yes, I almost forgot, it contains some of Dom's finest work on the whole album.

Exo-Politics: OK song. Not fast nor slow, not hard nor soft, it's hardly anyone's favorite but it keeps the flow nicely.

CoD: Great great song. Such variety in it - acoustic and electric guitar, nice drums, great bassline, strings, trumpet... Gotta love it. It's a shame that "I will avenge" part is done in falsetto live :).

Hoodoo: Pure darkness and emotion. If I had to pick one song from BHaR to give someone chills, it would be this one. Awesome song with some of best lyrics too.

KoC: Last part of the awesome ending trio, KoC is a perfect album finisher. With its minimalistic lyrical style (being the longest track with shortest lyrics) it really doesn't provide any "food for thought", it just takes you on a horse and gallops towards the BHaR's finish line.
