What makes a Muse fan.......a Muse fan?

This is something I've been thinking about for a while now and it's cropped up in conversation quite a few times when I've been chatting to friends or people who don't know their music.

What do you think makes a Muse fan a Muse fan? We seem to have a reputation that sets us apart from fans of other groups and artists.

What is it about Muse that makes us so fiercely loyal and passionate about them? Why we won't let anyone who isn't a fan say a bad word about them but then we can be their strongest critics. We seem to be a hardcore bunch, difficult to please at times and occasionally divided

If you've been a fan for years (like I have) or are new to them how do you feel about them? What is it about these three lads from a small town in Devon who quite literally rock your world?

A LITTLE LONG

Don't lock this thread :awesome:

My opinion is that it's not just their music, it is also the personality of Matt, Chris and Dom and the whole group. But just to start with the music, it is very special and at times very strange. Everytime I introduce Muse to a new friend or family I get the same reaction: :stunned:

I think that in order to love this kind of music ( and there is a difference between loving music and listening to music) one has to be very passionate about it. Another thing is that Muse's music is unique. If you are, for instance, a huge Metallica fan you will be able to find and love music by bands similar to Metallica. And therefore, Metallica will lose some of your attention. With Muse'd music, it is different because there is nothing like it. (Yeah, there are some tracks similar and or inspired by Radiohead and Queen ++ but all in all their style is different from everything I've ever heard)

Another important thing, as mentioned, is the personality of the members. How entertained are we not by their interviews, Matt's hilarious laugh, their over the top, strange music videos etc.? And they do things (such as the treasure hunt) that just keeps us interested.

and the last thing I'd like to point out for now, is the fact that they're great live. Being a great live act makes fans really loyal I think.

Now that's my reasons for being like I am. :)

Why I like Muse:

Upon hearing them for the first time ever half my life ago, it was completely different from the things that I was listening to at the time (Offspring, Third Eye Blind, Metallica, whatever they played on the radio), and because of that I absolutely loved them. And It also helped the fact that nobody knew who they were too, it was like my own little secret. When people would ask me on the bus who I was listening to and I said "Muse" they'd be like "who? what?"

Now after getting to know the band more over the years, their sound has especially grown on me, Matt's vocals are just like nobodys I've ever heard before, and their music (specific ones) just get me pumped up like no other. Now that we're in the age of Youtube, since here in America you're unable to hear anything Muse-ish in terms of personalities of the band, I automatically fell in love with their personalities. Matt is just a goofball, no way that man can be a normal human being, and their chemistry together is just great and I've never seen that with any other band before. It really gives me something to model my friendships over :p haha.

And my last point is that their music is so hard for you to not listen to. I've been listening to Muse A LOT since I first started listenign to them, and they've always been my #1 choice. Every other band I listened to after that, I got bored of after a few days, then it was back to Muse where it was completely refreshing. I don't have to go hard rock all the time, and I don't have to go serious all the time, thats what attracts me to Muse's sound.

Well..idk if i should be honored the title of a true muse fan..But after i listened to Knights of Cydonia on MTV one morning i loved it. I looked more into muse and within weeks i pretty much have listened to EVERYTHING muse has done. they have been my faviorte band since..My 3 best friends were like "WTF IS MOOUSE?" a year ago..I got mad at them and told them to check them out and i made them listen to muse. And the resistance came out and my friends really love the album. Im glad i got them to like it. But whenever people said something bad about muse i exploded on them..Im very open-minded to music and i can tell matthew and dom and chris or mainly matthew are open minded to different genres and i love that about them. Each sone has a different personailty and its great. Each album..each song is very different (in my mind) and im glad they dont sound the same all the time. Espically live when their songs change on tour over the years..its amazing. Also the personailites of the members makes me more attached to them everyday. I feel as if matthew is my cool brother i can go to and talk about anything and like a best friend and dom i feel the same while Chris seems like a quiet but strict guy lol. But i dont fully think i deserve the title of a true muse fan...not sure..

I've noticed the unique 'hard-coreness' of Muse fans before as well.

It's not every band that has their own fan-created wiki or manages to crash their website and forums when a 30 second clip of a new song is released. Not many official forums have 45 threads and counting of 'pornogenic' pictures of the lead singer either. We might not always like all their songs but our dedication is unmatched

Why I like Muse

Muse is one of those bands that are unique; they're not the type to be forgotten when some new teeny bopper track/ artist hits the charts. I love how their albums basically have a different sound each time, their experimentation keeps them interesting. Imagine if they kept the same sound for 10 years! (Repeition, much?) They're clearly brilliant live, and know to put on a good show! Muse has also had influence in my art, they're music just inspires the mood of my paintings.

Well.... when I first heard Plug In Baby.... all those years ago, I generally, what tah hell is dis shiz?!!?!

But then after one reached the age of maturity (i.e. 16) one became the muse fan I am today

Indeed, happy times :D They just have this quality that allows people to be obsessed with them. They are very easy to be "obsessed" with, I must say.

I love that I love ALL of their songs... even if I need to listen to it for months to even stand it (Micro Cuts, now I adore it!), I always love every song in different ways!

+ They're different from other bands, and the guitar is always stunning. No boring chords all the time like IMO Green Day have. The guitar is always unic with great rhytm!

+ That they are so caring about their fans, I mean.. Which other bands posts twitters and photos of them self all the time on Twitter? I think that's so cuuuuuute and I just want to hug them for doing that.

+ That I'm now so obsessed to them... I don't know how to explain it. They're just my life (almost) right now. They always cheer me up when I'm angry or sad. <3

True that one :D

Quite possibly...

I was watching my Making of The Resistance DVD last night and got all emotional at the end.

I was asked at work today if I've ever liked a band as much as I like Muse and to be honest I haven't been this empassioned about music since my old teenage obsessions!

I get goosebumps when I listen to certain Muse songs, no one else has ever been able to do that

Hey, me too! I watched it for the first time last night before I got to bed, I've probably never slept better by the way.

I was a huge AC/DC fan a couple of uhm 7 years back, and I was really obsessed talking about them all the time (to the point where my brother had to tell me there's other bands than AC/DC out there) but that was nothing like my Muse-obsession!

The feelings that occur when I hear their songs are special :) (and I like it) Everytime I hear Exogenesis, I get goosebumps and I can't really multitask around Muse...

Today I was at Borders and they finally had the Q magazine, so I bought it. My friend was with me, and I was going on about Muse and she said, wow, you really are a groupie or something. And I said I hadn't been as nuts over a band since the '80s when I was so into Duran Duran, lol... She asked me to describe their music or name a band that they sound like, and of course I couldn't do it.

Oh, and she read the part on the Q cover about 50 cans of beans and an axe, and she just laughed! I explained that Matt's a bit of an eccentric. :erm:

First of all I have to say that Muse is one of the few bands out there who have a really distinctive personal style, imo. And even in songs that aren't as "typical Muse-y", you can still hear their characteristic sound. I also love their lyrical themes, the whole "darkness" and ambiguity of their early years up until the conspiracy theories and all the other freaky stuff that only Muse seem to write about ;) They have always had a certain mysterious edge to them that keeps fascinating me.

As for the music itself, it's hard to name reasons why I love it. It just appeals to me on a level that no other band has reached before them. I love love love their classical influences and the certain "sophistication" that seems to be part of their output :)

Then, there are their personalities. Of course I've never met them, but they seem like such fun, nice and intelligent people (not to forget musical geniuses!) that I'd just love to hang out with them. (Plus, they're all very sexy :p:awesome:)

Ah, and Matt... What can I say. I'll probably sound like an obsessive fangirl with this, but he just has IT ALL. Good looks, charisma, intelligence, musical and lyrical talent... I love him so much, he's probably my biggest idol out there *swoons* :D

OK, I don't know if all of that was understandable. As I said, it's not that easy to name reasons, but Muse certainly move me in a way that no other band has achieved. I've never felt so connected to, so "into" a band than I do with them. I connect so many personal memories with their songs, and there isn't one piece of theirs that I haven't grown to like/love. In conclusion:

:stongue::musesign::musesign::musesign::stongue::dance: :dance: :awesome::awesome:

I also find it difficult to define what exactly makes a fan a fan. I think you just have to start with the music. To just like the bandmembers or stuff like that is nonsense. And most of the time if that's the reason why you like a band it doesn't last. While the music does ;)

And I couln't have said it better:

...there is a difference between loving music and listening to music...

and that is so true!

To me a (Muse) fan is somebody who loves and feels their music (uh, how cheesy) Haha somebody who still goes into a store and buys the cds or downloads them legally from the internet (that's why I actually still buy CDs of my fav bands, but that's just me) mhh and somebody who loves them over the years no matter what. Yeah that's basically it :D

You know when you hear a song for the first time and you just know instantly that your gonna fall in love with that band?

I must of been like 10 or 11 when Plug in Baby was released. I remember when I first heard it, it was like in those few minutes I knew I wouldn't come across a work of art as good as that again

Listened to them ever since, Loved them ever since.

I'm not really a veteran. I wasn't old enough really when Showbiz came out to discover them then. However I'd say Showbiz is probably my favourite album.

I just really connect with their music. I think I know that better bands exist but they don't have the same effect on me. As loserish as it sounds, Muse's music makes me feel like I can take on the world.

I think everyone has a band that they are really passionate about be it Muse, The Beatles, Jonas Brothers
