aww thank you!! :D

I received a letter last friday that I was officially accepted to the study..I also got a list of required books, which, according to that list, was about to cost me (well, my parents), 844 euro.. and then we went and look on the internet, found out we could import most of the books ourselves and save about 200 euros in total.

For example: this one dictionary costs 109 (!!) euro if ordered through the bookshop.. through the internet, we can get a new one for almost 70 euro, shipping included. Stupid, isn't it?

Ah well... *sighs and dreams*

844euro:eek::eek::eek:That's crazy! How many books have you got?

Yeah, you should save money as much as you can on the internet!!! How about uesd one? When I was in NZ, I tried to find used books at bookshop, and sometime I could get good one. (Maybe some lazy students who didn't work hard sold them. Thanks:D)

Is that dictionary imported form Japan?

In total (well, I haven't counted them, but this is what I estimate): about 20-30 books. Most subjects I have have at least 5/6 books, only 2 or 3 subjects have less books. Makes things quite expensive.

and no, that dictionary is not imported from Japan, but from the U.K. Although I do intend to someday import books (novels, or manga) from Japan. As soon as I'm able to understand how amazon.jp works ;)

*less than a week to go before I move to my new house :stunned:*

If you come to Japan, we will get as many mangas and novels as you want!

Anybody here?

I'm trying to learn japanese at the moment, and I'm now starting to learn Kanji. I'm a bit confused with the on and kun readings on my flashcards...what are they?! And how are they used? Sorry if that's a stupid question but I'm a beginner! If you got any tips on learning kanji, let me know :D

I thought this was funny (for those that can read Japanese)-

Haha... Apparently it's a sign from some cram school bragging about how 96 of their students got into a particular high school (the "fat girls" is actually an abbreviation for the school's name).

@Pancake-

Each kanji can have both on and kun readings (and sometimes none or even several of each). The on reading is the Japanese version of the Chinese pronunciation, which in Japanese is often used if the kanji is put together with another kanji to form a different word. The kun reading is the Japanese reading, which is used if the kanji is read on its own or sometimes as part of a name. So yer, each kanji can have several different pronunciations as well as several different meanings (woooo, fun). Good luck with your studies! :D

Hmmm I haven't done any studying for a while... :erm:

Ah I get it now - thanks  I know a bit of Chinese so I can pretty much guess the meaning of some. It's the pronounciation I have to deal with GRRR >.<

Congratulations, lottie!

After you completed that, maybe you can plan actually going to Japan. :D

3 years from now, I will have to go to Japan, for school. In third year, we have to go to a university somewhere in Japan (Tokyo or Kyoto or Osaka of I'm right... *votes for Kyoto* )

And thank you!!

I'm now at Maastricht already, I moved here yesterday (and yes, I've managed to get internet working on the same day)

Look at the left side of the pic.

I think there was a Kanji but the paper that is printed the Kanji would come unstuck.

Even so,the pic was so funny:LOL:

It's never really too late :) . Thank you anyway :D

Yes, hopefully in 3 years time from now I'll come to Japan.

Kyoto sounds like a gorgeous city, with lots of nature and stuff, whereas Tokyo is more urban and smoggy and Osaka is even more urban and factory-ish. Am I right?

How's life there, so far?

If you are looking for a general idea, yes. :) But if you will be living there for a while, you can experience different aspects in every places. Kyoto can be smoggy (known for a hot summer, because of its lower land level), while part of Osaka is incredibly rural --- you can be surrounded by mountains, without seeing a building. Tokyo is urban, but some areas remains traditional culture. And if you stretch a bit, you can even go Matt's favorite spa-land, Hakone!

hakone_03.jpg

Anyway, I'm trying to say Japan is bigger country than generally people think, but it is convenient, most places are accessible by public transportation. I hope you'll have a good guide there, so you can enjoy what you like, wherever you land. :)

Life's fine so far  .. I'm having dinner with some housemates this evening, for the first time (I had a party from a friend yesterday, so I've been back at my parent's for a few days, returned to Maastricht today). I've also spent about 4 hours in the train today, after having had not much sleep, so I'm almost falling asleep at this moment

I was indeed mainly going for the general idea, since I don't know that much about Japan, really. My knowledge is very, very basic. So thank you for that information!

To DJ Sensei(???)

To yura

Hello!

I'm going to Fujirock by myself, too. Don't worry it's not dangerous, even if you're alone:D

OH, Hello the_light!

it's been a while since I posted it last time! thanks so much to reply me.

Fuji Rock was just awsome, wasn't it?

It's my first time to go Fuji Rock, and it's just...FUN!!

But one day trip was a bit tiring for me...when I got back home I was totally burnt out...

Were you there for three days?

thanks again messaging me,

That's a shame...

But I personally think they'll have shows in the UK.

Which venue are they going to play?

And welcome DJ sensei and Yura!

I'm sorry I'm late to say that.

I hope you enjoy yourself here!

Hello Anno, thanks!

Yeah I'm enjoying very much this site, mostly reading though...haha

Sometimes I read very funny posts when I'm working at the office

and I can't stop giggling.

and your "futo Jyo" pic is very funny.

I'm wondering how the students of them feel to be said like that ... is it a hight school, I suppose?

Have a nice weekend Anno, thanks again

YES Hakone! I love that place. So sad I didn't get to spend more time there. :(

Went to Kyoto too and loved it, but it was springtime... so maybe I wouldn't love it in summer. But then again, I come from Vegas. I know what a "really hot summer" is.

Oooh I got to speak Japanese for the first time since school got out (I ran into a Japanese teacher at the university here). It's very weird, because I was taking a pretty hard French course. You notice right away the different feeling that speaking one language has when you try to speak a different one all of a sudden. Like, your mouth feels different and you listen differently.

Okay, I'm a language nerd.

Vegas I don't think is a place I'd love to visit. Ride through, once, maybe, on the way to something else. But besides that, no.

But then again, I'm not too big a fan of America as it is.

It's true what you say about languages. It feels really odd when you've been learning one language and suddenly have to speak a different one.

*language nerd as well*

I've lived here my whole life, so I'm sort of used to it + fed up with it. I'm sure it's a great place to come on vacation, but living here is just BLEH.

Anywho, I would highly recommend coming to the US if you want to know anything about it. It's really not what you see in the news. ;)

I want to go to New York, like, propah lots. Heh, and I've always wanted to go to Las Vegas for a weekend or something, though I don't imagine it being that fun unless you're 21. casinos omgm. I love blackjack.

London is boring, where are our casinos?

As this is the Japan thread, I should put something Japanesey in as well. How cool does shibuya look?! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Shibuya_night.jpg

*wants* :(

Been there, wasn't all that great, I have to admit. :erm:

"Wow, it's big and crowded and full of lights and signs."

Well, there was a cool old lady with rainbow hair who wanted to practice her English with us. Haha.

Sort of how I feel about NYC. Except I have had MUCH worse experiences in New York.

Shibuya is boring. It's just very busy, but that's it.

EDIT: that crossing gave me nightmares, though ._.

I liked Shinjuku much better

And Tachikawa. And Kunitachi. For some reason.

I know it's not just what I see in the news, it's just that American media in general tends to somewhat annoy me. Granted, some tv series are cool, and some films are, but most of it annoys me. Like that house make-over program, with that Ty guy.. It's always the same.

Although some things in America do sound nice, and there are some things I wouldn't mind visiting once (Roswell, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone Park). But I don't want to see them that bad that I'll actually go and spend money on it. ..Maybe one day if I'm rich

Shibuya... I think I'm quite capable of standing somewhere in the middle, going 'err, which way am I supposed to go again?:stunned: ' . Especially with people coming from several directions.

Heh, doesn't bother me in the least. Guess that's why I'm always drawn to the hussle and bussle of large cities. Living in London does that to you!

Discovery Channel, PBS, History Channel, Sci-Fi, Travel Channel... THAT'S where the good stuff is at, not E! or MTV or TLC. It seems only the bad stuff gets exported. ;)
