james90
hmm how many have you built with partial chambering like this one? much of a sound difference between full chambering?
hooglebug
not really. the full chambering i usually leave for when theres an f-hole. or when there are particularly weighty woods involved like there were in that one - wenge and bubinga are heavy
Neil.
hooglebug, did you ever take a look at how some places chamber their bodies for tone? I remember seeing a couple of interesting ones, like where they had a load of small, rectangular chambers. but something like this could be interesting:
hooglebug
everyone has their own ideas i suppose. theres millions of different ways of doing it. prs just has some 3/4 inch wide vertical routes on its single cuts, some have loads of little tiny ones with thin ribs seperating them. and gibson of course just randomly drills some holes here and there
Neil.
i quite like the way yours are done. Is it much lighter with the holes?
hooglebug
you can tell the difference
Neil.
would it be, for example, much lighter than a mahogany solid body?
hooglebug
well, its gonna be lighter cos you're taking most of the mahogany out. it depends what you put on top of it
Neil.
yeah... well it looks awesome anyway! i'd say it'll sound cool too.
hooglebug
heres the neck with its headstock cap and wings (being glued on now). the neck has been thicknessed and just needs tapering top has had its angle put on. once the neck has been tapered and had its fretboard end shape on it, and the neck pocket cut then i can get to carving the top
james90
looking good - that necks flame maple then? (not that i mind - i originally chose plain maple for some extra stability) but i think you said it's quarter sawn as well.
Phill
flame bonus!
hooglebug
i ordered plain. i only noticed some flame to it when i sanded the headstock angle a bit. it seems light but there is some flame there. but yes it is quarter sawn so theres nothing to worry about stiffness wise
james90
sounds good i'm having second thoughts about using this guitar for that tuning...how do you think it would sound with down tuning? maybe at first I'll just use it in standard tuning, but with heavier strings (EB skinny top heavy bottom preferred) and see what it's like. hooglebug
who knows. might be that the scale length would need to be a bit longer for it to really work, but i cant see why it wouldnt be ok. but its easy enough to put new strings on and tune it down isnt it. just got the neck tapered - will do the neck pocket now. then glue the front headstock veneer on tonight

hooglebug
top has been cut for neck so is ready to start carving now. neck needs carbon rods and truss rod installing, then fretboard can go on. inlays will have to wait a while as my dremel broke today. brilliant.
