Maybe I should have reworded it to say "on the few times they play UD, they should use the keytar." It certainly beats Matt strutting around the stage like he's Bono. Now that I think of it, they still play the Resistance intro, don't they? Only it's now the intro to The Globalist.

Best Live Performance of any one song
TheHappySpaceman replied to Alistair Hay's topic in Songs & Releases
Oh damn, I forgot it was involved in that incident! I remember about the Glitterati, though. Damn shame. It's funny how after the Glitterati was smashed by Matt a ton of times on the previous tour, it was an unrelated accident that finally destroyed it.- 2,965 replies

Also, Matt needs to bring back the doubleneck and the keytar on Resistance and Undisclosed Desires, respectively. (Especially the doubleneck.)

Maybe it's experimenting that you don't personally like, but that doesn't make it objectively bad.

Oh wow, I didn't even remember that. I mean, I obviously remember the sunglasses, but not the rest. I do remember his puffy Panic Station outfit, though. I thought it looked good with his red shirt in the Bliss video. I also think that his blue and blonde hair looked alright, too. I'm glad he's stopped dying it, though, as I've heard that excessive dying can cause your hair to fall out (though I'm not sure how accurate that is).

Hmm, I just listened back to Assassin (both the original and the extended edit) and I can't hear what you're thinking of. Maybe you're referring to Hoodoo? I think of Matt as less of a "cool guy rocker" type and more of the David Byrne "knows he's a complete nerd and weirdo but does nothing to hide it" type. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puDTZAlCv4A Because let's face it: if one of these days, Matt comes out on stage wearing a comically oversized suit like that, would any of you really be surprised?

Right, that's the one! Also, while we're at it, many of Matt's hairstyles in the early years of Muse just looked silly. (Particularly the spiked hair from Hullabaloo.)

Those aren't as uncommon as 5/4, though.

Really? *goes back and checks* Huh, that's a different outro riff than the one I remember. Maybe it was because they were playing something else on the Hullabaloo DVD version of it.

On what song prior to Animals? I can't recall them having done that before.

Best Live Performance of any one song
TheHappySpaceman replied to Alistair Hay's topic in Songs & Releases
IMO, the best performances of Uprising and Resistance are the ones where Matt Bellamy uses the doubleneck guitar. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EcJ8WS1Cy4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSZnVyp-vj0 I wonder why he stopped using it. Maybe it's too heavy?- 2,965 replies

Sorry I was unable to respond. I was at a friend's wedding yesterday. Anyway, to answer your question: The album experiments with a lot of different genres of music and other elements within the different songs. Basically, I see it as Muse trying new things to see what sticks, such as electronic-driven pop with Madness, symphonic James Bond-esque rock (not sure if there's a better way to describe it) with Supremacy, funk rock with Panic Station, dubstep with Follow Me and maybe Unsustainable (though that was driven with guitars unlike most dubstep), uncommon time signatures with Animals (that one in particular was in 5/4), full choirs in Survival, and letting Matt not sing lead (the last four songs, most particularly in Save Me and Liquid State). Considering that I am still here on the site, I would greatly prefer you to address me directly if you have any complaints instead of mocking me as if I weren't here to notice it.

I was more accepting of The 2nd Law because I feel like every band has to have their wildly experimental album, such as Queen with Hot Space and Van Halen with Van Halen III, and most of the time, these albums do get some kind of backlash. Nevertheless, Follow Me is still not one of my favorites.

The worst thing to come out of post-Absolution Muse was Matt's decision to stop playing the guitar or piano on certain songs (e.g. Unintended, Blackout, Starlight, half of Uprising, Undisclosed Desires, Follow Me). Also, as for the whole "Muse sucked after Black Holes and Revelations" discussion, well, I only got into Muse via The Resistance, so I may be a little biased when talking about their later output.

So I'm not sure how many people here share this opinion, but there has never been a Muse album that is wholly or even mostly bad. Yeah, I was kind of stretching it to figure out what the ballad on Absolution would be. (I forgot about Falling Away with You, though I suppose Endlessly might also count--either it's a ballad or it's a prediction of the RickRoll.) Ah, I forgot about Falling Away. Never thought of Invincible as a ballad, though that may just be me. I knew about Guiding Light and Explorers, though. But the question is, why are ballads inherently a bad thing? You guys seem to like Unintended and Blackout just fine. ...Well, at least when Matt is playing guitar on them. Otherwise, what's the point? (No, Matt, I will not let you forget about 2013 that easily.)

Fixed. But wait, I was unaware that that was a rule. Showbiz had Unintended, which was in E. Origin of Symmetry had... okay, I can't think of any straight-up ballads on that album. Absolution had Ruled by Secrecy, which was in F minor, and Blackout, which was in B flat. Black Holes and Revelations had Soldier's Poem, which was in D. Only The Resistance and The 2nd Law had ballads in C. Don't you think you're being a little unrealistic? ...or maybe I'm overthinking a silly, probably only half-serious comment on an online message board. That could be it.

Top 10 Silliest Muse Lyrics (Video)
TheHappySpaceman replied to TheHappySpaceman's topic in Songs & Releases
I didn't think everybody who saw the previous thread I'd made would see it. I had posted it in the Creativity thread, though I guess it wasn't creative enough. I might delete this thread later, if I'm able to. -
Based on my own personal thoughts as well as suggestions from this thread, I created a Muse-centric video discussing their silliest lyrics. Feel free to check it out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZIpjpUrSEY

I decided to compile my picks and some of yours into a video. Thanks for the suggestions! I never would have caught some of them without y'all pointing them out to me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZIpjpUrSEY

Hah! Oh man, that's too much. True. It's mostly just the fans keeping it up now. Still, it reminds me of back in the early '70s, where every band from Led Zeppelin to Black Sabbath to even Queen was being called a Cream ripoff.

Regardless of whether people prefer Radiohead, can we all just agree that people who hate Muse for supposedly being a Radiohead ripoff are morons?

Best Live Performance of any one song
TheHappySpaceman replied to Alistair Hay's topic in Songs & Releases
What I find interesting is when there are alternate versions of a song featuring piano or guitar, such as Sunburn, Cave, and Soldier's Poem. I recently rediscovered the piano version of Screenager, which I greatly prefer over the guitar one featured on the album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eG6wu3jqLAU- 2,965 replies

I wholeheartedly agree! I can't see what people dislike about them. Now Follow Me, I completely understand.
