Protonix Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 I was just wondering.. The pups on my guitar are starting to die. So I got the idea that I could buy one that he uses. But before I do that, I'm wondering are they worth the money?
Jyrgen Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 Your pickups are starting to die? How old is your guitar?
Protonix Posted August 13, 2010 Author Posted August 13, 2010 It's two years old. And it had 1 year guarantee. Could the pickups die because I was changing my guitar scratchplate? Because once I did that at a local shop. Can't say the man was qualified for that. Could that be the reason?
musecam123 Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 Pickups don't die after 2 years. What exactly is the problem? It's probably just faulty wiring/ soldering.
Grinning Death Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 Real pick ups don't die they just multiply.
Protonix Posted August 13, 2010 Author Posted August 13, 2010 The problem with them is that there is no sound from them, and when I put a wire on a pickup, it doesn't react. Like the magnets are dead.

Protonix Posted August 13, 2010 Author Posted August 13, 2010 They aren't active. It's a cheap guitar with some cheap pickups from I don't know where. Maybe the guy who was changing my scratchplate screwed up some wires?

Protonix Posted August 13, 2010 Author Posted August 13, 2010 Shit. So what can I do now? I don't have the money for a new guitar. Any ideas? Or should i just buy a new pup? And THAT includes collecting money, ordering from the UK probably... Oh my God that's gonna cost a fortune. -.-"
tomrulez Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 Rewire it? It's not rocket science, far far from it in fact.
Protonix Posted August 13, 2010 Author Posted August 13, 2010 Yeah, right. To me, it IS rocket science. I on't have a clue about wires and stuff. It's not like i learned how to solder and rewire.... My grandadis is an expert for wiring, but I wouldn't give my guitar to him... What's with the new pup idea?
Protonix Posted August 13, 2010 Author Posted August 13, 2010 Would a MBK2 work OK? I heard that it's pretty good when it comes to either distorsion or clean
tomrulez Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 It really is very simple to rewire a guitar, a quick google search will give you all the information you will need.

Phill Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 If you can't wire a pickup, then you're going to have an issue buying new ones I was just gonna say this. You're going to have to rewire it either way so might as well get some practice!
adds Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 Would a MBK2 work OK? I heard that it's pretty good when it comes to either distorsion or clean firstly, the above. you're going to have to do some rewiring regardless, and secondly for the cost of an mbk2 set you can buy a new guitar anyway, an Epi LP special 2 is about that much.
Protonix Posted August 13, 2010 Author Posted August 13, 2010 Dude, I'm pretty clumsy. I'm just not capable of that. Haze, a friend of mine told me that near the city is some guy that has a guitar shop, and also IS qualified for repairs and stuff. So I'll pay him (or something, I dunno) to wire that pup I'll buy. And that's it. EDIT: An MBK2 costs how much? It can't BE like a new guitar. 250 pounds or more? I'm surely not buying a LP. SG mybe. But LP, no. I just.... Don't like them.
TopherJS Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 A MBK2 set will run you over 200 quid, then on top of that you'd have to pay a tech to wire them if you're so against doing it yourself. For that price you could get an Epiphone SG.

According to Mansons.co.uk it's 119 pounds for a single MBK 2 pick-up. Why don't you keep the ones you have now? You'll be paying somebody to wire it whether you buy the MBK 2 or keep your current ones, so might as well save the extra money.
Protonix Posted August 13, 2010 Author Posted August 13, 2010 OMG. Overpriced. No, I asked the man. He would charge me... 5 pounds. Not much, really. But 200 pounds for a pup? Why, for God's sake?? EDIT: I don't want to. They are old, weak and dying. Is that enough? I just wanted one for the bridge, because I don't use the neck one. The sound is just... Muddy and muffly.
TopherJS Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 Get a cheaper pickup? You really don't need to get what matty B has. I put a couple of IronGear pickups (http://www.irongear.co.uk/) in one of my guitars, they sound pretty good... I also get to see peoples faces when I tell them my guitar comes with a "Hot Slag"

You said they're 2 years old, not exactly ancient, and it's already been established in the thread that they aren't dead, simply wired incorrectly, pay the guy at the shop the 5 pounds and spend your 119 on something worth it. Is that enough? I just wanted one for the bridge, because I don't use the neck one. The sound is just... Muddy and muffly. Have you tried raising/lowering the pickups? How close/far away from the strings the pickups are affects the sound. I'm starting to think we're being trolled here. :/
Protonix Posted August 13, 2010 Author Posted August 13, 2010 Well, what can i say. Just asking. Is there a pup on irongear that "boosts" treble and bass? They look nice.
Protonix Posted August 13, 2010 Author Posted August 13, 2010 I know it affects the sound. I tried that, but they star to disassemble. I dunno why
