the flame has really jumped out now that it's finished - is the finish actually done or do more coats have to be put on?

noooooo thats just the colour coats on. theres only a tiny sealer coat on top of that. no real clear coats yet. still really cold here, snowed again yesterday.

and lily - i use acrylic cellulose. either two pack or already mixed.

got several feet of snow in the past few weeks here. would you say it'll look much different with the clear coats on? i like the look of it now to say the least, and the flame is a lot more noticeable.

id do it when it was stuck on but before angles or carving were started. this one hasnt got binding on though.

And then you'd carve right down the binding? What about on those last two you did. The pair. I'm was curious how to get the binding channel Just the right width on something like that.

apart from ebay where's the best place in the UK to get spare parts like switches, pickup holders, capacitors, pots, all those sorts of accessories.

Would like to buy in bulk and all at the one time.........so preferably the one website.

Allparts is good.

Axesrus seems good....looking for hardware but don't wanna just take a strat or les paul type hardware

Axesrus always seems like a budget option to me, whereas allparts.uk tends to be more quality stuff like gotoh etc.

I get pickup surrounds and knobs from axesrus sometimes but tend to get tuners, brides, switches and that kind of thing from allparts.uk.

I'm look for really awesome hardware, because if that simple stuff is blinging, it must be awesome right?

A big fat volume knob, one you could get your whole fist over (exaggeration) but something chunky that makes people cover their ears when they see you reach for it.

no binding on them either hehe. you just use router bits with bearings on. you can get specialist binding cutting bits, but i had a set of bits and swapping the bearings around i found one was just the right size for binding.

Really? I thought they had cream binding between the tops and bottoms.

Yeah I'm cool with the depth of the binding with the bearing bits, I was just wondering how you'd get the width right if the binding wasn't going to be flush with the surface.

Only way I can see of doing it would be to do half the width off the top of the bottom bit and half off the bottom of the top, then put them together so they meet up.

nope no binding on the bodies of them. dont know where you've been looking hehe

well generally the bottom of the binding just sits flush with the bottom of the top, or a mm or two below it. so you could just make the top smaller all the way round anyway. or just route the channel the thickness of the top

Yeah I just looked back at the photos, dunno why I thought they did.

If you had quite a thick top on it though, obviously you couldn't just route the whole of the top away though. I guess that's quite uncommon though.

I'm excited about doing a flame or quilt top guitar, they look so good!

well if you carve, you take it down to the binding. apart from on les pauls in the cutaway next to the neck. but thats gibson.

the top on this one of james' is about 20/21mm. thats pretty thick. usually they're about 18mm, something like that. an inch would be pushing it really. especially with maple.
