    Memorable doesn't necessarily mean great. I like Matt's lyricism overall, but I'd say the likes of Silberman and Berninger write better lyrics (they just don't instantly lodge in your head all the time).

    It probably is just me preconceptions. Silberman needs to write some pop-prog songs to prove me wrong.

    I was actually talking about the (post) metal band, sadly defunct. One of their albums is about a prison design that would allow total observation of all its inmates- the album being written in the wake of the Patriot Act and all that jazz.

    I don't zone out of lyrics unless they're indecipherable, but it takes some really heinous writing to truly annoy me.

    I agree with Hopix on that. Generally, the obliquer Matt is, the better his writing. Though I don't think he could take it as far as Isis, for example (the only example I have to hand of an album about surveillance, and the lyrics on that are really sparse too).

    The lyrics are pretty weak on a lot of Showbiz, I'd say. It's a very adolescent album though so that's to be expected.

    I get the feeling that it'd just seem wrong, somehow. Silberman's writing has such an intimate feel, particularly.

    I just can't see Silberman writing anything big, punchy and angry. Though I don't know who I'd suggest instead.

    Generally he's fine if he's leaning more on vague imagery, a la Chino Moreno. I'd say he does better than most lyricists I've heard tackling politics, but the general success rate on that is pretty low.

    So it seems we'll be getting a new new Deftones album before Eros. Sixteen tracks and a less conventional album. From what they're saying it sounds like it'll be closer to Eros in spirit than Diamond Eyes or KNY.

    I wouldn't say it's overused. If it's a good riff and sits on a song which sounds fresh, I don't have any issue with it.
