  1. I think it's more that Radiohead's fanbase respects them, because they generally don't pander their music to please anyone. Muse have always kinda done this – OoS was basically a middle-finger to the Radiohead comparisons – but the end result was awesome, so nobody really cared. BH&R was where they started trying to please different crowds at once. Most of the album was fanbase-friendly, but Tits, Invincible and SMBH were a little too blatantly off-canon in their radio friendly ambitions. TR was worse. In the space of 50 minutes, you had formulaic, stadium-hungry anthems; a couple of unmemorable, Muse-by-numbers tracks; a weird detour into electropop; and a bunch of neoclassical symphonic stuff. For me, the best tracks here were the non-rock ones. Drones was their come-crawling-back album after trying to build a larger fanbase and not really hitting the mark. The result is fairly palatable, only now the fanbase has largely come to realise Muse's earlier decision not to market to them, which makes the radio-hungry and pisstaking tracks much harder to swallow. This contributed to a lukewarm reaction and a lack of ticket sales to dedicated fans, necessitating the mediocre setlists we're seeing today. tl;dr Muse had a niche following, threw it away for mass appeal, failed, now a good chunk of their fanbase is tired of their shit which is why their fans are now largely casuals.
  2. Don't think people get what I mean here. It's more that Drones has a bunch of great ideas, but they've seemingly forgotten how to write a chorus without a) resorting to cheese, or b) blatantly taking the piss. Psycho Dirty, sludgy intro Bass solo Pretty good verse "I'm gonna make you..." The entire chorus Aftermath Sexy guitar work Nice verses "From this moment..." The final three choruses Revolt The intro The verses The guitar solo The tempo change "You've got strength, you've got soul" Muse were better when you didn't know if they were joking or sincerely ridiculous. Revolt openjng with a police-siren-cum-synthline is fucking amazing. Then they add #humour to the chorus and the whole thing is ruined.
  3. Muse haven't really written a song that is 100% bad. It's more that they increasingly combine great ideas with generic, shitty ideas to make something with so much wasted potential that tne end result is jarring.
  4. It's an improvement, don't get me wrong, but Muse are still jumping from one extreme (hits) to another (deep album cuts and B-sides). It's like they're blind (or ignorant) to the fact that the first three albums have a bunch of great, well-known singles that a lot of people would love to hear live. I mean if they had a 20-song set with these songs I'd be very happy Muscle Museum Uno New Born Bliss Plug In Baby Dead Star/Hyper Music TIRO Stockholm Hysteria Butterflies/Fury Starlight SMBH MotP Knights Uprising Dead Inside/Madness Psycho Mercy Reapers The Handler
  5. Does that mean they're going to play Drones three times? Why is a playback song even on there? And why are staples in the choices? It's a bit hard to say they don't know the difference after Montreux. Also their choice of rarities is still really weak. I really couldn't care less about random B-sides when they aren't playing Sunburn, Muscle Museum, Uno, New Born, Hyper Music, Dead Star etc, and even songs like Bliss, Stockholm and MotP are fairly uncertain.
  6. TR has some nice bass work as well. Resistance is fantastic, probably the best part of the song. Uprising and UD are also great.
  7. My opinion of this band has changed quite a bit over time. When I first discovered them in my mid-late teen years, I went through a few periods of obsession with them. I'd fall madly in love for a few months and listen to them exclusively, being consistently awe-struck and enchanted by their music, and then I'd get sick of them for a while and not even want to hear their name mentioned. I've found that as I've gotten older, like my feelings towards a lot of things in life, my opinion of Muse has slowly stabilised. It dawned on me recently that I don't particularly "hate" anything they do anymore – even their worst moments (Guiding Light, Coma, Sober) have something unique and enjoyable to offer – and likewise, I'm not madly in love with them anymore either, but on occasion they can still manage to blow my mind (eg: I remembered how much I love Micro Cuts tonight). So basically, Muse and I are in a long-term relationship, and while I sometimes long for the butterflies and excitement that they once gave me, I'm just happy I haven't gotten completely sick of them after so long.
  8. Drones in general has a repetition issue, but that's not the problem with Aftermath. Everything after the solo is pure early 2000s Pokémon movie soundtrack, it needs to be redone. And that video successfully manages to taint the good parts of the song with unnecessary cheese. What the fuck Muse.
  9. I'm liking this 2-night setup they're doing. PIB, Bliss, AP, CE, Hysteria, UD, TaB and MotP are all getting the right amount of air time, so it's a big step in the right direction. My main complaint is that there's still no New Born. M'you rang?

  11. 1. Sydney 2010: First gig. Had all of the 2010 staples (most of which were great) plus Sunburn and CE. Alright, Slow Born sucked, but that light show for the intro was mental. 2. Sydney 2013: Butterflies. The one song I wanted to see more than anything else, and at the final gig of the tour, they played it for me. 3. Melbourne 1, 2013: Great night overall. We had CE, and Stockholm closed. 4. Brisbane, 2013: Just a terrible night in general. I had my heart broken in Melbourne after the above gig, so GL was just adding insult to injury. No rarities either.
  12. You're right, my apologies. Turns out the brother has been dead for 13 years. I had the impression that his death was a recent thing, so the campaign came across as exploitative and insincere.
  13. If he didn't have nodules before, I'm almost certain he does now. That grating sound is a good indicator of vocal damage. Using your brother's death as fuel for a campaign is pathetic. I hope they don't play it.
  14. Psycho Dead Inside Bliss The Handler Supermassive Black Hole Starlight The Globalist Apocalypse Please Sunburn New Born Mercy Revolt Time Is Running Out Reapers Stockholm Syndrome Take a Bow Plug In Baby Knights of Cydonia omg knights is the worst closer ever
