What is the first thing you loved about Muse
Spectrum IV replied to taron's topic in Other Muse Topics
Moved to Other Muse Topics. The bassline of Hysteria. I heard about 2 seconds and I was in love. -
Hi there, That’s strange. Could you please provide a picture of what’s going on?
-
I finally figured out how to log in! Still not over this album My opinions have barely changed. GUAF has become skippable, but TDS, Prop, BITM, Block, Void are still top tier Muse.

Look what you’ve done

Yay! Best of luck for a smooth transition.

I'm surprised there are votes for Showbiz. Sure, it's a step below their best albums, but not by much.
-
I have to say, forcing myself to take breaks from the album is definitely paying off. Even songs like SH and TC are randomly popping into my head and nagging at me to listen to them. I only wish I'd had this level of self-discipline for the LP 2-4 trifecta, they might still excite me the way ST does now.

I always thought studio was “it’s lost so easily.”

The vast majority of Muse songs are either good, or so bad that they’re good. The traditional good-bad quality gamut doesn’t really apply to Muse. Muse are basically the musical equivalent of shitposting.

I just noticed Matt changed the lyrics to “it’s not so easy for me.” Dead :'(

T2L was 6 years ago though. Does that mean opinions of it are now accurate?

Alright folks, let's get this party started.
-
Eh, I give up on ranking albums. I just group them into tiers. Great Origin of Symmetry Hullabaloo Absolution Black Holes Simulation Theory Good Showbiz The Resistance Decent The 2nd Law Drones They haven't really done a bad album yet.
-
I'm more surprised that you just described the song as "okay". Not the sound of angels orgasming, not literal fucking cancer burn it, but okay.

This song will be played every night, closing the pre-medley set with an extended Bliss outro-solo cum big rock ending, or I'm dropping this band.

Muse could drop every political song over the past four albums and I'd be happy. Their most compelling material occurs where Matt finds new and honest ways to explore his condition. SH is an exception only because it's missing the point. The band didn't enjoy touring Drones because on some level I believe they knew it was nonsense. This is also why they need to stop playing Psycho, the epitome of Muse's hamfisted 8th grade politics. Don't get me wrong, Animals is a great song, but it becomes unlistenable once you've processed and memorised the musical ideas. All that's left are some platitudes about how bankers are evil and should commit suicide. Same applies for Uprising, Unnatural Selection, Supremacy, Explorers, and most of Drones. Matt writes significantly better songs when he takes himself seriously as a lyricist, not as a politician.

Such a disgusting tune. I think it was listen #3 or #4 where it "clicked" and my body started violently manoeuvring to the groove and I couldn't stop myself.

Two weeks later, still love this album. Even DD, TC and SH are growing on me again. They work better in the context of the album, though acoustic SH is still better. Blockades, Propaganda and BITM are the best three tracks they've done since BH&R. Overall 8/10. I'd probably rate it a bit higher than Showbiz, but still feel there are a few less-than-great tracks holding it back from being one of their best.

I’m not hearing anything too weird at 2:15, it’s descending Eb-D-C octaves in bass possibly with a fifth being played. Then the chords follow the ascending bass line Cm - Eb(Maj7) - two bars of Gm. If it kept climbing to a Bb, we’d have Undisclosed Desires. Also the chord there is Eb, but the song is in G minor, where Eb is the VI chord. The general chord progression includes D7 and D7b9 chords with the F# note borrowed from G harmonic minor. There’s also a descending Csus - C - Cm section on “these delusions” with an E natural borrowed from G Dorian (or F major). We can talk about this here, it’s perfectly on-topic.
-
It’s an EbMaj7 in the acoustic version.
-
I don't know about incredible. It's definitely a great album and their best since BH&R. I'd be happy to call it one of their top 4 albums if there were less songs in the vein of TC or vanilla SH.

The chorus is proto-Muse to the nth degree, probably the most aurally pleasing 15 seconds of music they’ve ever written, with Matt in his falsetto register. Then he sings “reborn” to a Phrygian dominant scale, which starts out clean, and gradually morphs as Matt returns to his chest voice. Then we’re right back to chest voice rapping over detuned guitars and weird Arabian hip-hop. A literal fucking rebirth. I can’t get over it.
