  1. :awesome:

Can you link any good examples of someone using a boost?

Mmmmm.... it really depends on the kind of boost. I'll give 2 examples and you can see if either tickle your fancy.

    1. Jack Fuckin White

JW uses an MXR Microamp. From what I can tell, it's got 2 great features, both relevant to your setup. The first is that he uses it to really drive his amp. If you give the likes of "Fell in love with a girl" a listen, I believe that's just guitar > micro amp > amp. Tone is awesome. It kinda shows how transparent that boost is. It doesn't really manipulate the tone in any noticible way (also, looking at the schematic of it shows this too), it just adds more drive. The second way he uses it is with the Big Muff (this is also the reason i want to buy/build a microamp). If you listen to much Jack White, you'll know he has a trademark stuttery sound that crops up in solos. There's tonnes of theories on this, including the use of a ZVex Tremolo Probe. That one's not entirely untrue. There's a video of the raconteurs playing Blue Veins/Bang Bang at coachella and you can see him farting about with a Trem Probe. HOWEVER, 99% of the time, Microamp > Muff is how he does it. There's a vid on the web where a fanboi demonstrates this. So all you gotta do is turn the microamp to like 70%, the muff settings for jack white is all of them at 2 o'clock and then stutttuttssttt away. <3 the microamp.

    2. Blowing Up

I have this. It's mental. Vidja or you suck. http://ohnoho.com/blowing-up/

So it's $100 of insanity. The version i had didn't have the hi/lo gain mode switch, so when you boosted, even if your guitar volume was low, and the blowing up was low, it got crazy. With these kind of boosts, the objective is insanity. And sometimes, that's ok! I would personally like to have blowing up and the microamp on two loops and a footswitch to go from one to the other. Both awesome though.

  2. i'll start with the toans, cos it'll be a shorter issue. 33nF is high, but not excessive. imo, 10n-47n is a nice range. I cant remember what i usually use, but i think it was a 12n or a 22n.

As for your photomajigger, what kind of a camera is it?

The way I tend to photograph my gear is a bit of an unconventional method, but i like it because it means I can completely avoid using flash. I have an 18-55mm lens at the moment, purely because it's the standard one that comes with my Nikon D3100. With that, I use it on Manual Mode, iso at around 200-400. Then I'll usually vary the f number and the shutter speed to get the shot I want. So, if I'm taking a closeup, say of wiring or a bridge, or the inside of a pedal, I'll have the f number as low as it'll go (i think my lens will only go to around f4.5) and then set the shutter to a fairly slow speed, between maybe 1/25 and 1/60. For further out shots, like of the whole guitar, I'll bring the f back a bit, maybe to f10-f22, and bring the shutter up. For those ones, you might have to bring the iso down a bit too.

Alternatively, just turn it to flash-mode, turn off flash, and let the camera do the work.

  3. is this what you want?

i have a feeling i screwed something up with the picture, as the first mark on the ruler was right at the top of the wang part... but it looks lower than that in the picture

    that is perfection in itself.

    tomorrow, the modelling begins :D

    edit:

james didn't you (or possibly hooglebug) use a really unusual bridge in something recenlty?

  4. omfg we had that picture printed out at A1 on the door to our architecture studio since 1st year

You pretty much nailed the shots on those 2, so either of those. Maybe one like the 1st one for both (so we can compare the shapes lol) It's probably easier to lay them on the carpet than prop them up against the wall cos of their stupidly awkward unusually unique shape.

  5. NEIL

apparently my repair didn't work (although it's a big improvement - am pro lutheir now?) so have some pictures

    no inappropriate enough?...

    IMG_0982.jpg

That bottom pic + ruler = BFF

white 3d printed, maple core, voronoi patterned F hole, ibanez gibralter bridge, 2 x p90s, Moses graphite neck. That would be my instinct.

    ?

THIS, but wtf do you think you're doing posting something from mewzelive? enjoy your perma.

I want that finish on a modded tele. Looks fucking awesome. I bet it'd look class the other way around too (black on red)

    Dave? :awesome:

And yes, what a dick, how many pages have we gone without any pictures? Get a grip Jim

    Nah dave's grand.

  7. wasn't really referring to Jim or Nicole, but anyway, isn't this the first time she's been in KnT though? It'd be like walking into bantards and trying to troll ryan.

He certainly didn't. He's had a lot of cool vintage stuff, and forms his opinions based on actually trying, testing and owning them. If we're going to be a prick to Jim about anything, it should be that he doesn't post enough pictures of them.

  8. trolololol. ohai i'm new here and don't have a clue what's going on, but i think i'll be hard as fuck and take on all the people that have been here longer than me, are older and wiser than me, and be supracool.

    Seems legit.

*waits patiently for cheddatom to make a successful rap about new under 16 year old kids in knt trying to troll him.*

As for being on topic, can anyone remember aaaages ago (so this will rule out any new twunts that want to try to troll the issue at hand) there was someone that had pics of a tele that they relic'd that was two toned? As far as i can remember, it was red underneath, and black on top, but relic'd in such a way that the bits that looked worn were a sort of red/black blend?

Also, Jim does know a lot about vintage guitars. He's had his fair share.
