I read 50 pages of the first book (not The Hobbit) and quit because I was bored. I know. I know what you mean... it took me incredibly long to read the books and I was happy when I finished them in the end It's hard to read at times because Tolkien is rambling very often. There's a slogan for writers and it is : "Show, don't tell".
