An Abu Dhabi F1 grand prix has been high on my "bucket list" for 5 years, so Muse playing on the Saturday was the clincher for me doing it this year. They did exactly what a "general" non-Muse crowd wanted and needed, a storming set of recent-ish greatest hits with not too many oldies for the newbies, if you see what I mean. Net result a very happy crowd and lots of new fans. They should have told Depeche Mode who played the Sunday post-race gig... I mean I like DM but I last saw them in 1982 (Birmingham Odeon, £3.50) and I was bored witless by a lacklustre performance and lazy setlist planning. I have never seen so many people streaming out, 15 seconds into each new song when they realised it was yet another dirge they didn't recognise. But Muse were brilliant and gave their all as they always do. It was great to see the crowd respond to that given that 95%+ would have never seen them live before and probably a quarter didn't know who they were. Job well done.
