  1. Reapers is heavy for Muse, for sure, in places, and one of the two on the album I'd probably still classify as true "heavy" rock. (In places. :chuckle: ) For Muse.

My point more being that most of the album isn't like that, and exactly, when they say they want to do a "whole hip hop album" that the real shock would be they stuck to something they said. Especially for a whole album.

It's not a shock that Matt voted Brexit, even if I disagree with what he believes in that respect, it's disappointing that people stuck with outdated nationalism and a vague fear of big government in the face of a disgustingly racist campaign. Sometimes you need to compromise for the greater good and for civil rights.

I knew America had a big problem with that, but always believed the UK was better than that.

Well if you think "outdated nationalism and a vague fear of big government" are the only reasons why some people voted or would vote Brexit then I humbly believe that's missing the point. And because some jackasses use wrong arguments shoudln't disqualify the cause.

Ahh, getting all political on the future gigs thread. There isn't much to talk about, is there?

  2. Eh, if Reapers isn't heavy then Muse really have few heavy songs. Muse have always been diverse, so I don't think it it realistic to expect them to stick to one genre. There's always going to be outliers, even if they put out a more focused album. In that sense I think they did make a heavier, rock-oriented album, because its backbone is heavier than the last few LPs.

As for Matt voting for Brexit, that's only consistent with his past claims in favour of decentralisation, I am not surprised.

  3. Yeah well, TOADA is guitar-driven but not particularly heavy, but Defector's guitar and bass tracks are definitely heavy to my ears, at least by Muse's standards.

As for TG I can amend my statement to "one of the heaviest sections Muse have ever done", the point still stands.

  4. Mmmmh. Psycho, Reapers, The Handler and Defector are undisputable heavy tracks. The Globalist has the heaviest section they've ever done, and even Revolt is driven by loud guitar riffs.

Mercy is obviously Starlight-like but apart from that there isn't much to support that claim.

  5. The solo of The Handler is one of the best things of the album, if fact is one of the best things humanity has done since the invention of the wheel.

If aliens are watching us they problably are saying: Look at the glorified apes, they have wheels, and the solo of The Handler!

What the fuck are you on about tho

  6. This is really the first album for me where I feel like a Muse song went on for too long...and it happened THREE times. Psycho should have been at least 2 minutes shorter, Aftermath 2 minutes at least (or preferably all of it) and The Handler's solo, which I just don't get.

Personnaly I think TH's solo lasts long enough to become cool again after the first effect fades away. It transforms into a different impression. It reminds me of an endless staircase kind of thing which I like.

  8. The Dead Star line works better in context of the song, because the entirety of the lyrics are pretty awful. Not sure that makes it better.

I'm okay with artists putting themselves in "characters" to explore dark and uncomfortable themes (if that's really what was going on here; that's an assumption to say the least,) but I would hope in doing that, there's some form of greater social awareness from it. If that makes sense.

Putting yourself into a first person "character" that reflects the inflictor of a very real, very common problem faced by an entire group of people and not giving any hint that it's supposed to be viewed as a negative behavior doesn't sit well with me.

Especially when it's an issue that many people don't believe is wrong, or a problem, in the first place.

The song paints one of it's "characters" as nothing more than an object, and the "protagonist" as a protector, and thus the good guy.

Yeah well I don't know, it seems obvious to me that the person who speaks in the song is completely out of his/her mind and shouting shit. And that's interesting imo because as a listener you get a glimpse of that insanity for one moment. Trying to feel it, to understand it without approving of it or forgiving it. We don't even know the story behind it. I guess I've simply never felt like the song was trying to inspire me some sympathy towards the narrator or the idea that the other person was at fault.

I comprehend that being a guy makes it easier for me to interpret in an inoffensive way, though.

  9. I know what you guys mean about that Dead Star line but in the very specific context of the song it does not bother me. Dead Star is violent and about exploring extreme feelings and reactions, which can be outrageous, politically incorrect and, to call things by their name, sexist in this case. Diving into the mindset of someone who's having such reactions (be it because they are genuinely sexist or because they're having an exceptionnal fit) does not mean you endorse those reactions and is a totally legit experience imo.

Now the cringey lines are another story.
