  1. I don't really think a guy who writes and performs tracks like USOE and Panic Station considers himself to be very dark at all . I think matt is very much in touch with how cheesy Muse songs can sound, and also how dark they can sound if he wants. Plus, it's like you said, dark doesn't necessarily mean better. I have a friend who thinks Christopher Nolan should direct pretty much ANYTHING and have it be super dark and gritty but what he doesn't seem to grasp is that it's not always needed. I find that when there is no respite from constant brutality, in any medium, it can be exhausting. Going off topic slightly but take for example Hannibal, as Citizen Erased #01 mentioned. A programme that encourages it's audience to flirt with the idea of being a serial killer through the main character Will Graham, but always retains the overarching notion that they are still trying to catch Hannibal and bring him to justice. As a result, the show is one of the darkest on television, maybe THE darkest, yet it's not hopelessly bleak. I know nobody was saying it was a bad thing, but I like that Muse have darker and lighter elements to their sound and I think it's why their back catalogue sounds do diverse and has been so accessible for people.
  2. You're right, for me it's their best effort since Absolution. Exogenesis and MK Ultra aside, Reapers, The Handler, Defector and The Globalist beat anything off the last two records in my opinion. Plus US was good, but too similar to New Born's riff for me and the breakdown seems to lose it's way slightly. Absolutely battered that album when it first came out so I know it's not just a case of me not listening to it enough either. Overall, i'd put the album on a similar level to Black Holes and as others have said, it's a step back in the right direction, they just need to cut out the sillier moments and lyrics imo and it would have been right up there with OOS and Abso.
  3. Album is garnering a lot of praise from most critics it seems, many of the one's we've heard from so far anyway. Just waiting for Pitchfork to chime in now
  4. People often say this, but I think certain tracks are as "deep" as anything else in rock or alternative music.
  5. I definitely didn't think The Resistance was better than Black Holes and I know for a fact I didn't think T2L was better than The Resistance. Drones, however, I feel is better than both and at least on a par with Black Holes.
  6. Even Drill Sergeant is better than Revolt
  7. There's an argument that those kind of lyrics are easier to write though. I do it prefer when muse are less obvious, but I can only applaud the effort to try and make it all make sense on a concept album, something which I wouldn't imagine being easy.
  8. Well Matt has one explanation for the, at times, awful lyrics. He said in tonights Radio 6 interview that Mutt told him to be more clear and simple so it's easily relatable to the concept or something along those lines
  9. Wow, the first bit of positive feedback I think I've ever had on the board! Yeah it's probably what was in mind, and i'm not saying people can't still dislike the songs because of it (as I said, I think Revolt is very weak), but I feel like that would be Matt's justification for the inclusion of the more flamboyant elements of those tracks and in a sense, I can see how it works when you play the album in it's entirety a couple of times.
  10. Starting to think the Queen elements actually work in the context of the whole album, as the places they show up are around the time when the protagonist is rebelling and both the Defector and Revolt seem to convey a sense of euphoria. After this they cease during the more melancholy track Aftermath until the lament of Drones (if we consider the Globalist as seperate from the narrative). However, still dont rate Revolt at all
  11. Yeah I remember someone saying on here a while back that music shouldn't be hard work, but some things just dont click on the first few listens. Radiohead is the best example I can think of, I think I have appreciated maybe 4 or 5 songs from them after the first listen, the rest took patience and repeated listenings, there's just too much going on. I find that it's that kind of music becomes my favourite in the end though. Having said all that, I'm in double figures on Revolt plays now and if anything, it's starting to sound worse. Like, a lot worse. Initially I didn't think it was all that bad, but I just can't get over the "you can grow" backing vocals and the goofy guitar build up to the chorus. Makes me wonder what Matt hears when he is done with a track like that.
  12. A mixed bag for me, I think the strongest points of the album are up there with some of the best stuff they've done, whilst the weak elements are down there with the worst imo. Which in fairness, is more than can be said for T2L and The Resistance. (bar Exo perhaps) I think the main issue, ahead of the poor lyrics and cheese, is the sheer length of some songs, or some parts of songs. -Dead Inside's end section seems to drag -Psycho is so long it borders on repetitive -The Handler (despite being an absolutely stellar track) could have it's solo trimmed. Quite brutally trimmed to be honest. I think it goes on entirely too long. -Defector could have it's entire second verse taken out completely and work much better imo -As many have said, The Globalist needs to have that end piano section cut down substantially. I think I will be removing it completely like a few others have stated for future listens -Whilst I didn't dislike Drones as much as others, it should have been at least a minute shorter.
  13. Ok, so I didnt want to listen to the album until later on tonight but the reactions here forced my hand. I listened to Revolt because so many people were saying how awful it was, comparisons to Big Freeze, One Direction and Charlotte Church coming out My god this board overreacts sometimes, it's not even a bad song. The chorus is actually quite nice as an uplifting number. Makes me doubt some of the other stuff said here about different tracks now if that is being unanimously written off as the worst song.
