  1. Straight up never said this. It seems it is you who isn't understanding basic points now, or perhaps exaggerating truths to advance your argument. I said you were predicting what we would think if we had your "knowledge", arguably that is more smug to be honest.
  2. I understand perfectly, and even conceded that I was well out of my depth when discussing stuff like range, but that wasn't the only point being discussed and I don't like how Tjet doesn't seem to be able to convey his points without resorting to this weird "holier-than-thou" rhetoric. As I said, i'm not the first to call him out on it.
  3. No, you're telling people what they would think if they knew "what I know" about the technical aspects of someone singing, that is unbelievably self-righteous. Ha, are you serious? The condescending tone isn't something I've just noticed on this thread, it's riddled throughout all of your posts. Here's my argument then, Matt Bellamy is a great singer and neither you, nor any other of the high-horse posters can tell me that opinion is in any way less valid than your own.
  4. So, just to clarify, if people "knew what you knew", Matt would no longer be considered a great singer? Expect an extermination drone inbound lest you one day have a platform on which to inform people of this knowledge. You could be a threat to one of Warner's most lucrative properties! I wasn't worrying and i'm deliriously happy that you know of so many artists, but I didn't say Bennington looking weird means what you thought I meant, I said he looks under strain hitting a lot of his notes, and it reflects in the performance. He sounds strained. A lot of your posts seem to contain a thin veil of condescension that suggest you think your opinion on certain matters is more valid than other people's, for one reason or another. I'm not the first to take issue with it and I can pretty much guarantee I wont be the last.
  5. Well first off, I still don't understand the issue in comparing Matt Bellamy to great singers, especially when Alex Turner was cited as an example. Technical know-how or not, Matt is widely considered a great singer. Are you suggesting if more people knew as much as you on the subject they would change their mind? I definitely know next to nothing about range, perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned that, but regardless I think it's fair to say that a singer's merits should be judged on whether or not what they can achieve in a studio setting can be translated comfortably to a live setting, that's usually the barometer isn't it? And some of the frontmen you cited don't do this as well as Matt. I've seen Flowers, Bennington and Tankian in concert with their respective bands and I thought they were weak vocally to be frank. Flower's voice pretty much disappears under any sort of strain. Bennington looks like he's under serious stress when singing and his performance reflects this. Tankian doesn't seem to have the lung capacity to keep up with the speed of his delivery on records. I understand you are knowledgable into what makes a singer technically sound and you were talking about their vocal range, but if you're asking me what simply sounds most aesthetically pleasing, I think Matt pisses over a lot of the frontmen you suggested. And that was what the original discussion was about, I just naively took it down the range "route" because I think you're way too harsh with your opinion of Matt's voice.
  6. I usually bite my tongue to avoid the aggression and backlash in situations like this, but I have to say I think you're wrong. On almost everything. Comparing Alex Turner and Matt Bellamy is frankly quite ridiculous, and I love both bands. Comparing Brendon Urie to Matt Bellamy was also slightly ridiculous. You can personally find Matt's voice to not be to your taste (although strangely you said it is) but to say he is technically nothing special and lacking in range is quite stunning to read in text form.
  7. Someone I was watching it with thought the guitars sounded out of tune, but neither of us know anything about music really and I doubt they would be on Jools Holland if that were the case. Still, something sounded horribly off, if it was intentional then I think the less said about it the better
  8. Think people like that need to look around the music scene a bit more. For example I love Arctic Monkeys and really enjoyed AM but right there is a band who changes with each album and adopts a weird persona and that to me is more of a joke tbh
  9. Me neither, used to all the blues stuff from his first album and really liked it but that performance was really good. I thought he sang quite "rough" to disguise a weak voice, but clearly not.
  10. Just got home from work and had a chance to listen to Reapers. Wow. Think the guitar sounds decidedly more classic rock than it did live like we all thought they would, and I think it works seriously well. Really, really like the vocoder effect on Matt's voice during the chorus.
  11. As I said, shaky setlist but i'm talking about Matt vocally and the instruments, the actual performance. PIB on the Rome dvd made me sit up and take notice of how amazing they've become live, when I thought they couldn't get any better.
  12. I didn't even realise this was up for debate!? I actually think they've gotten better as the years have gone by. Shaky setlist and pop-star wankery aside, Live at Rome is up there with the best they have ever sounded I think.
  13. I think it's a bad idea for them to play new songs in a live setting before we hear the studio versions, might have worked a few years back but with the level of intense scrutiny and nitpicking, something like Reapers is probably only gonna disappoint people now I reckon.
  14. Whilst that is obviously true, I don't think it's simply just a natural progression of sound though. It seems like there came a time (roughly around BH&R) where the guys look like they thought people might be taking them too seriously. Like when I hear people say "they've always had a deliberate element of cheese" I'm afraid I don't agree. There is nothing, to me, cheesy about anything from Showbiz-Absolution. Sure, unpolished moments which come off as a bit amateur and some questionable lyrics, but it was always serious and sincere and I think the music benefitted immensely from it. Most of the heavier songs had a sense of urgency and the slower numbers were dark and full of dread. But it's not simply the fact they aren't putting out rock records, as Tjet said, they've been doing pop since 1999. It's like they've lost something else which is hard to articulate. Maybe they've just grown up a bit and we all simply prefer the ramblings and ruminations of a young Matt Bellamy, as opposed to the older one But it seems like maybe they felt they were being pigeonholed into an inaccessible band who were catering only to a select few, perhaps it was studio involvement? Dom's comments many years ago about "everyone thinking they are a band who just sing about the Apocalypse" and Matt's reluctance to play older numbers like Dead Star at Shepherd's Bush because it was "weird" seem to go along with this theory though.
  15. I just think people need to forget about the guys ever sounding like they did pre-Black holes era. It seems like an argument that's raged on for nearly a decade now. Every band has their purple patch, some rare bands put out consistently acclaimed music their entire careers. I think Muse's best days, when they were at their most creative and original, are behind them now sadly. But even when they are at their worst it's still better than half the stuff out there so I'll always look forward to a new album. Plus, despite Matt's voice seeming like it's deteriorating slightly, the band as a whole keep getting better performing live with each album, so there's that as well.
  16. You sound like you've already convinced yourself the new album is going to be sub-par. I for one am happier with the singles we have heard before this album release than the last two album's singles. Pyscho is at least as good as Uprising/Supremacy Dead Inside > Undisclosed/Madness Mercy > Resistance/Follow Me Obviously all opinions, but I think people should keep an open mind based on what we've heard so far, definitely an improvement for my money.
