  1. "As I left the strange, food chain-littered, concrete-covered world of North Greenwich (if you’ve never been it’s like a cold, low-budget version of Dubai)"

    Is it really?

Wouldn't that mean Canary Wharf was doing a cold low-budget version of Dubai before Dubai was cool?

Vice journalists are so fucking stupid and it would be nice if any seemed to actually know London rather than regurgitate tropes.

Greenwich is quite nice, the O2 arena is a soulless corporate hellhole, but its not all of North Greenwich.

  2. I really appreciate any help you could offer. Thank you!

Don't do Muse. The Resistance is also a bad choice as its all over the place genre-wise.

Pick something from genres such as Punk, Hip Hop or anything with genuine ties to a location and its socio-political issues.

The second part of that brief relies heavily on contextual analysis, not vague comparisons to classical composers as people were doing in the other thread as you're unlikely to find sources to confirm any link there.

  3. Yeah Bristol or even Southampton are viable options for airports too.

Heck even Heathrow or Gatwick (and possibly others) are almost equally well linked to Exeter via train as Bristol and Southampton.

I travel from where I live near Gatwick to Plymouth quite often to visit my girlfriend which takes about 4 hours 45 minutes. From just Gatwick to Exeter would be nearer 3 hours or 3 hours 30 minutes I expect

I imagine if you considered multiple airports for inbound and outbound flights you'd find something which meant you didn't need a hotel in Paris.

Eurostar would probably be no better than than flying on cost/time basis, although there may well be more scope for travelling back after the gig at night and it's still pretty well linked to Exeter.

Not sure about what the train times are from Waterloo, but last train from Paddington is half 11 at night, not sure if it even goes to Exeter. So no its not a great idea to take the train if you can help it as its safe to assume there'll be no way to get back after travelling from Paris after a gig.

Bristol isn't far away from Exeter, I think there's a Truro one as well. Travelling to Gatwick or any of the London ones just doesn't make sense from Exeter unless no other option. The train journey alone will take longer than the entire flight from anywhere in the South West!

  4. Umm, I checked after recording, it's exactly like the tabs say, and not just one, but like 5 different... also, I know I goofed up the last one, but like said before, why would it have to be exactly like the recording?

The issue is you're mixing it in with the original recording, so you're clashing with that. Sounds like some parts you're struggling to play well. Not so much an issue of you not knowing the parts, but being rehearsed enough as a player to perform them confidently.

    Just keep at it.

  5. Do you guys know of any amp/ amp sim that actually sounds good with headphones?

Softube VAR is what I tend to use most. Bit limited compared to other software, but all the better for it.

Otherwise Amplitube. Hate Guitar Rig and don't see the point in hardware amp sims unless in a covers band. Good headphones make a big difference though.

  6. So, rather than showing proficiency in playing a song and your instruments you'd prefer people seeing you mess up? Now that sounds strange to me!

I really don't like some of my old covers and I've removed most of them simply because they were bad.

So, why not go the extra mile of practicing a bit more, and working out a slightly better tone?

Surely judging people based on studio recordings that were likely edited from a number of takes is placing kind of high expectations on what is essentially people having fun in their bedrooms?

  7. Any good?

I doubt I'll actually buy anything like an old guitar or amp, but maybe a pedal or something like that (especially if they have some weird old ones that I can try)

Any suggestions for other shops in the area? I'm familiar enough with the ones on Denmark Street, so besides those (which I'm sure I'll go to anyway)

There aren't really, just smaller ones that are good for accessories, but definitely not worth visiting if you're travelling from the USA!

Its worth a visit if you're looking to head to that part of London.

  8. Need a bit of advice about amps.

I'm probably going to buy a valve amp at some point this year (finally). Fancy either a Vox AC30C2 or an AC15C2. Don't need anything crazy loud since I only play at bedroom volume or at small gigs. I usually have my amps set up so they sound a tiny bit dirty but still fairly clean, so would the AC15 be better? But it'll compress more easily (less headroom?) than the AC30 so might end up sounding a bit less chimey if it's fairly loud won't it?

Hope my slightly confused rambling makes sense here...

Used an AC10 at a gig once, was too quiet for clean sounds in that environment. Would be fine for home/bedroom use though.

It all depends on the drummer (assuming you have one) really. If you have a particular loud drummer, then the AC30 would be better, just might lean more towards clean.

  9. Ah okay that all makes sense. I'm looking at a pair of Rode M5 cardioid condensers at the minute. Seem to be a decent entry level option, don't seem to be capable of figure-8 but maybe mid-side should be left for when I've a bit more experience (and cash) to do it properly.

What would you recommend for a decent audio interface? Probably won't need more than 2/3 inputs at the minute, obviously with phantom power. A decent headphone monitor would be good too actually. I'm really clueless when it comes to this though

Honestly have no idea! Most are acceptable enough these days

  10. Haha no I think I understand. Do you mean the process of duplicating the ribbon track and putting it out of phase? Is that what "mid-side" is referring to?

So you're suggesting two matched microphones with one switched to polar to act as the ribbon mic? That makes sense to me.

Who knows, I may be better off going for two matched condensers in a spaced pattern as jaicen suggested. Lots to look into.

Nah you don't need to have matched microphones, just better if you can, that's all.

That's one aspect of the technique, you can mix & match, as long as one can do figure-of-8, you're all good to go. So it can be good if you're on a tight budget as you can get two different mics which are useful for different things and still get stereo from them.

But yeah, its not always ideal, especially in a not too great room.

  11. Ah okay, I assumed ribbon and figure of 8 meant essentially the same thing. That's great though thanks. When you say match the microphones, would that not be an XY pattern? The chap I saw explaining mid-side was that one microphone was capturing directly from the source while the ribbon was picking up everything either side of it.

By 'match' just meant two of the same type of microphone, so same frequency response (Or similar at least, as different patterns can affect it). More used to using AKG C414's for this sort of thing, which you can switch the polar pattern on.

That is bit of an oversimplified explanation. The mics pick up more or less the same (can even use omni for the mid mic), just how its processed separates it out. Which is probably the worst explanation ever!

  12. To stay slightly on topic, I'm looking into possible routes to mic up my acoustic so I can stop recording stuff on my iPhone 5. Damn ribbon mics are expensive. I want to try a mid-side layout for stereo so I'll need a ribbon figure-8 and a cardioid condenser from what I understand. I'll also need a decent entry level audio interface. It may be time to sell some junk at casa macaroon. Any tips from the resident K&T sound engineers would be lovely.

    /bs post

It has to be one figure-of-8 microphone (doesn't need to be ribbon) and any other microphone, doesn't matter about type or polar pattern, even managed it using the output from a mixer one time. If you can match the microphones, its better.

There are plenty of relatively 'cheap' ribbon mics. Quite liked the MXL R144 when I've used it.
