  1. Of course, why should they perform more when they don't need the money? I just feel sad for all the people who weren't able to see them this time.

Its not about whether they need the money, but the figures there show that the revenue generated from live music has dropped more than recorded music, which happens to have a sector in huge growth (streaming).

Bands such as Muse already record very little, 10 songs every few years is seriously low output, slowly that down further would likely do more damage than good.

The larger drop in revenue from live music might be an indication that its past its peak with nowhere to go at present. Recorded music is in a state of transition and will be interesting to see where it can go.

  2. There was a video for a mod to make it sound like a VH4 on here a while ago, need to find that again. I've been putting a zvex distortron with the gain set at minimum after the mt-2 which adds a bit of high end back and makes it less transistory (and since it's meant to sound like a JTM 45 it kind of makes up for me using a vox amp for this sort of sound). It doesn't sound exactly like biffy songs, but it's close enough to have a lot of fun with.

    Good timing for this video.

I'm surprised you're trying to add high end back, it was trying to tame that as it was the high end that had the transistor/cheap quality to it, to me anyway.

Oh and Irn-Bru is awesome regardless of what it comes in.

  3. It takes a fair bit of fiddling to get something good. On it's own doesn't sound amazing, it's better with another gain pedal to warm the sound up a bit, but not add much more gain. You're definitely right about the mid freq control .

As its a Boss pedal, its probably worth looking into mods as they tend to use cheaper parts. But yeah, I did find it hard to get hard the tinny transistoryness, never tried it with my JMP though, although its still noticeable in Simon Neil's sound.

Although regarding modding Boss pedals, recently got hold of an old DF2 and preferred it over my modded DS1, which I ended up selling.

  4. Been playing with the metal zone a bit today, and it's not actually that bad. Some settings are absolutely horrible though

Yeah, the mid freq should never have been able to go past where it is at 12'o'clock. Then we wouldn't have so many bad sounding metalheads or had to listen to metalheads bitching about it because they haven't worked out how to turn a knob.

  5. While I appreciate the insight, it would be much more useful if you could suggest a frequency band boost/cut in either to help with what I was trying to accomplish. Apparently incorrectly.

You might be trying to achieve something you might not need to do, at the very least should be doing the complete opposite.

But definitely incorrectly, 250Hz is roughly middle C, why are you trying to get the kick to cut through there!?

  6. There is actually a clean blended with any distortion at all times although the blend ratio may not be to your liking. I did clear out a ton of EQ on the bass tracks around 250 hz though to make room for the kick.

If anything this was more of a progression in my recording/mixing/mastering skills which are still very new.

Totally wrong place to be cutting if you want the kick to cut through and it completely thins out the bass.

  7. Yeah, that's what you lose with an attenuator. You might get the basic sound of the preamp AND power amp section working, but unless you're just knocking off a small amount of output with an attenuator (to protect the speakers for example) it's not exactly the same.

Speaking of delay/reverb, I do think that unit would be useful also because it has an effects loop. Might be overcomplicating things though... I recall Tom Morello uses all pedals in the loop, but I'd imagine if he's getting a decent amount of overdrive from the power amp, it wouldn't make a big difference either way.

What has been annoying was putting together demos for a possible project and going for clean guitar sounds, getting to use the Marshall, especially turned up has changed that and just imaging having to play gigs with that sort of sound.

  8. It really is. I've been looking into one of these - seems like it might be a decent alternative to an attenuator, plus it has some other uses.

Its not so much the distortion, its things like feedback, getting that off a fairly clean sound is beautiful, with some delay/reverb its a hell of a sound. Just putting up with that sort of volume though...

  9. This.

Even with all the pedals and amp, I still sound like a poor imitation. I think there's two sides to the tone, completely apart from the way he plays. The live sound is very different to the records, particularly the later stuff. Plus I don't think most people can live with the sheer decibels he played with, that for me is a key part of the rich sustain.

Yeah, that sort of sustain can only be achieved with volume, not being too afraid of a muddy sound helps as well. Do remember hearing an early live recording of Hendrix and its fairly bassy/muddy in that glorious stoner rock way.

Not really sure why they went with a tape delay emulation though, it wasn't a big feature in his stuff or ever in his live setup (To my knowledge). But they do some strange things sometimes.

  10.

    Do I dare watch?

They can't possibly fuck this one up surely!?

I'd still prefer a normal right handed strat. Does playing a right handed guitar left handed like Hendrix did really have much of an effect on the sound? I know there's pole piece height on the pickups and all that, but otherwise, I can't think of anything that would make a massive difference :erm:

Nah, plus he recorded with a range of guitars, amps and pedals. The basic sound is easy enough to emulate if you have any amp that is of that era, its just playing like him.

  11. MIDI sends/receives instructions to/from other devices. If those devices are not turned on or in the chain, then there's nothing to send/receive.

Like you need a console connected to a TV and power supply for the controllers to do what they are supposed to.

Quite a lot of pedals are not MIDI controllable. Which furthers complicates everything.

  12. around 150~200

If you're after studio monitors, you should be able to get a second hand pair of KRK Rokit 5's for that budget and should be other options.

Active stage monitors or PA speaker is also possible, especially second hand.

Studio monitors would be for a bedroom setup and multiples sources, not just the multi-fx (But might need to consider a small mixer). Stage monitor would be good for going between bedroom and stage, but are not necessarily 'flat' as many are kind of intended for getting a voice across rather than the full frequency range.

  13. You don't need to mess with setting up the midi for the treadle at all if you just have it toe up and then use PC's to switch between -1 and +1 octave, that's how my file is set up.

If I remember correctly, the WH4 would make loud pops when doing that. Are you using the newest one and is it smoother?

  14. A really noob question: What do I plug my Line 6 multi-fx unit into to get sound out? I've only ever used headphones with it, but I do want to play without headphones now since I've moved somewhere with better soundproofing.

I don't have an amp though, and since the pedal has amp sims, would it be better to get something flat?

    Not better or worse really.

If you're also looking to use speakers for recording and listening to music, then probably better to go that route.

However a real amp is always nice, however impractical.
