Pop isn't an insult in any way. Pop is popular, catchy, easy listened and simple music. There is nothing wrong with that.

Just saying that one band doesn't define a genre, and everything doesn't have to sound just like it. That's why we have subgenres. The Smiths are indie-pop, a subgenre to pop. Lady Gaga is more to the electronic side, but pop nonetheless.
