I think they only possibly cause a supermassive black hole. I think the relevance to the song is that neutron stars kind of dance round each other initially (can see the relevance to courting) but the gravitional pull is huge and when they collide the explosion is extreme and they unite and become one, so all very passionate and intense when transferred to the idea of a romance. Even though I have giggled at the strange use of the lyric, that is overtaken by the seriousness of it's meaning and I think it's adorable. It's so Matt! Also in that it's very much underplayed and yet he's named the whole song after that lyric which speaks volumes (you know the other lyrics may have been overused but they're far from empty).
