  1. Hot Cakes:

it wasn't that bad for an album by The Darkness, but not certainly my favourite one.

Blockades is overrated. It seems Blockades becomes favourite in ST for its 'rock' sounds. I rate this song as same as Exo-Politics level.

What mainly makes Blockades as a... "make-it" (lol) song to me is the pre-chorus/chorus sections (which have such an orgiastic, epic singalong mood), and also the gallopping rhythm in the verses coupled with the classic "Muse© Synth Arpeggios©".

But yes, I can see where you're coming from: it's the mandatory Musey-Muse track that just can't be absent from their albums, which a good number of self-proclaimed "old Muse fans" (I'm not exactly talking about people in here, just in case you all wonder) will inevitably drool on. If you get a look at many comments on FB pages and groups dedicated to the band, official one included, they reflect this kind of mentality. And I find it quite sad.

  2. Unpopular opinion: people get called trolls way too easily and it lets them off the hook for acting like tools because we fool ourselves into thinking they’re doing it on purpose.

    Okay goodnight

This is actually interesting. I've never thought about it that way.

    Goodnight to you, too, man.

  3. Couldn't have said it better myself, although as a certified pretentious knob I probably could have, and for everyone waiting for Melon's review, if he even does review it, I predict it coming in low with a srong 4/10. He's gonna have to buy a new shade of red shirt for this album

Are you two even for real?

You and smoledman almost sound butthurt because many people here really like ST after a run of three "fanbase-splitting" albums, while you not.

There's no problem in just admitting you don't like the album because it's not your cup of tea instead of hammering your own concept of "quality" (see "personal taste and preferences") like it's a universal assumption, y'know?

  4. once all the videos are released, i want them to put them all together on a VHS tape like the one seen here:

...and make a limited amount of copies of it available for sale.

i'd buy one for no good reason.

I still have my old VHS recorder, which still works. I would be tempted to buy one of those copies and give it a run with it.

  5. Not trying to diss GUAF because to be honest GL isn't nearly as bad as we all made it out to be at first

Edit: well to be REALLY honest I do think GUAF is one of the most - if not the most - unoriginal, boring and un-muse songs in their discography, much more so than songs like TSP or TOADA that got criticised for this reason.

TOADA... unoriginal, boring and un-muse-y?? What kind of cruel monster would ever say such a thing?!

I tried and had to stop singing after that.

    I'd probably faint.

  6. I wish we got insight into Matt's writing process like this more often tbh. Wouldn't have guessed that Pressure was Beatles influenced.

I can see how they might have influenced it, but yes, the main riff with brass reminds me of T-Rex much more, rather than Beatles.

  7. BITM would have been a great lead single imo

It's not really radio-friendly beside its running time, though. It's very angular, fragmented and quite "noisy" (in the sense of not having a "pure" melody and in the choice of sounds).

Propaganda, on the other hand, would've been dope.

  8. Honestly, I'm baffled myself at the fact this works better for me than the official one.

It just flows better to my ears, because I chose the songs singularly by basing on an immediate connection I felt they could have between each other in terms of musical style, themes or sound, which I'm aware it may not be the same for other people. :chuckle:

  9. I think I solved my problem regarding the worn off novelty of the singles while listening to the album again this evening, guys. Wanna know how?

The good, ol' method of finding an alternative tracklist order.

I've discovered the official tracklist disposition doesn't really work for me: I feel the second part of ST (from TC onwards) is in jambles regarding the consistency of styles and moods of the tracks, with the result of not making me appreciate and value, within the album framework, even the songs I like the most which are present in that run (Blockades and The Void).

I wanted to share what I've come out with with all of you so that you may want to give it a try and tell me if it works nonetheless. Because for me it does, and now I can say my love and appreciation for the album as a whole has increased! Here's how my tracklist looks like:

    TDS

    SH

    GUAF

    TC

    BITM

    Propaganda

    Pressure

    Blockades

    Algorithm

    TV

    DD

I'd like to explain the logic behind it, but I'm afraid it would take too long.

  10. I don't really mind GUAF. The verses are nice. Especially the instrumental.

The verses wouldn't be bad at all if Tove Lo "ah ah's" weren't there. They actually remind me of New Born ones, only in major key.

The real problem is the chorus: powerful, yeah, but it's shamelessly vanilla pop-rock.

  11. So there is no consensus on the correct order? I haven't watched them all, but would like to watch in the correct order. I've only watched the first three album tracks, since I assumed that would be the proper order.

I wonder if a proper video production for Blockade may come down the line instead of the recap using all of the other videos?

I hate the comparisons to Ready Player 1 for this whole marketing approach. It's understandable, but that movie was an abomination and I actively dislike Spielberg over it. He diluted both 80's and Virtual Reality when he had the opportunity to make an amazing movie that pays tribute to it all. What Muse is doing is far better in that regard and should be thought of as having more in common with Stranger Things.

I'd argue Blockades might even be a sort of "extended trailer" for all the videos, working as a prelude to the whole story, which I think is set in simulations contained inside other simulations, like Russian dolls.

From that, I think the correct order would be: Pressure, BITM, DD, TC, SH, TDS, Algorithm.

  12. That is literally what we’re talking about :p

I didn't read his comment the right way. My bad, sorry.

GUAF seems the most likely to me, has “Revolt” written all over it, not to mention the vocals in the chorus, but then again if it’s being released as single...

Revolt was released as an official single, too, and it hasn't been played that much.

But surely it would be strange for them not to play an official single.

  13. Something I¡¯ve picked up on with Pressure - they should¡¯ve cut Matt¡¯s guitar in the verses and left that part to be mostly dominated by the brass (maybe including the extra parts from the UCLA version). As it is, the thin tone clashes awkwardly with the lower, punchier tones of the other instruments and it¡¯s slightly worse live for it as well (so far at least).

That would ascend it to nigh perfect for me.

Really? I don't think it clashes at all with brass, quite the contrary: the lower brass form a sort of "platform" sustaining and counterpointing harmonically the guitar line, while the guitar adds further grit to the brass by playing the main riff at the same time. In short words, it's like they complete each other.

Also, I feel transposing the verse of the AV (which is ridicolously funny, btw) into the official one would be too jarring in the context of the whole song: it would be like suddenly shifting from a bandistic, jazzy-ish feel to a full out rocking track in pre-chorus and chorus.

  14. Oof, they sound super here.

This performance shows how Pressure may actually be the best "fun banger" they've ever done in years. And that juicy, fuzzy guitar doubling the bass in the last chorus... :awesome:

I've never been into Duran Duran, but the HLTW cover is indeed top notch like Rory said, basically perfect.

  15. TC is one of the most fun and catchy songs they’ve released over the last 4 albums.

    I said it

    Ouch.

forgot how critical you all are, completely different to reddit

as I said, I predict you to rank this album below Drones/T2L eventually. Personally, though, I think Thought Contagion works (yes it's a bit too long) but it's actually a BANGER live and a nicely melted together song. On the other hand SH could've done with ever being dropped or re-worked completely, instead of having Rich Costey and the band smother it with some vocoder and WUB effects. GUAF is just whatever, hearing what it's about makes me hate it less, I truly feel bad for Matt after hearing the news - I can't bring myself to hate that song!

Disagree about ranking ST below those two, the peaks in there are so effing high that balance the lows out almost perfectly.

Agree about TC being a bit too long (and repetitive), disagree completely about SH,

    agree about GUAF.

Actually... there's something I regret about this album, but I swear it's the only problem beside GUAF being "whatever".

I wish Muse would have never carried through with releasing so many songs with months and months in advance before the official release. I love the last three (SH, Pressure, TDS) and I came around DD, but I listened to them so much in anticipation that the novelty was already worn off them. I think this helped us appreciating the remaining tracks more because it's like they prepared us for what was coming ahead in terms of style, but at the expense of sacrificing the surprise factor, which could have enhanced my enjoyment of ST even more than I actually feel at the moment.

  16. Interstingly enough, just from the article itself you'd never imagine it gets a 6.0

Let's put it this way: it's like when your hated goody-two-shoes colleague at work does something really good and you're seething because you know that, and he broke the overall image you had of him.

Thus, you have to begrudginly admit his accomplishment but not too much, just to save your face.
