So? Alyssa, if your left foot doesn't habitually work the hats then I wouldn't bother with it. You don't gain much from it in understanding of rhythm (woah, eighths!) and it's almost inaudible when played simultaneously with stronger instruments (like in a Bonham triplet roll or underneath a steady ostinato). it'll just become somethng your left foot does when it's bored.

Well those pictures were in a studio while BHAR was being recorded so I assume that he did track some songs with them. Not that it matters, the drums on BHAR are so different from what actual drums sound like for all we know he could have just recorded the output from an ekit.

...he rarely uses the Tamas for recording either and since we were talking specifically about his live kit I'm curious as to how that's relevant at all. And he recorded BHAR with Vistalite toms.

Well that song Biaxident is off an album by Portnoy's side project Liquid Tension Experiment that was released four years before Absolution. Since Dom never cited LTE or MP as one of his influences I'd say coincidence. It is just a fairly basic 6/8 rhythm with swung accents, too. (tho he uses double pedal ) Well perfection is awfully difficult to attain, especially now Jon Theodore's dropped off the face of the earth.

That's got to be it, I'm weak though, I play in gloves now no matter how poncy it looks. hehe, when I started playing I thought I'd use the same pair of sticks throughout my career.

Don't argue Adam, he can play literally all the songs. EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxDJNO19Sdo&mode=related&search= From 3:28 to 4:00 it's one of the two phrases that compose the Ruled By Secrecy beat.

No, Starclassic Mirage. no, 6.5" depth snares. BTW I only put the Yamaha brass on the Muse Wiki because you can see it in the TIRO video clip, it's a rental instrument. I like your sig, I have it in poster format and am looking at it right now. ...no. http://www.musewiki.org/Cymbals http://www.musewiki.com/Drums Is that right, now? and I've only gotten a blister once while using them Yeah but I get a ridiculous amount of blisters, I've never met anyone who blisters like I do. On Monday I played till my left hand first blistered and then bled. Forgot I had drummers gloves...

The kits themselves individually and the cymbals aren't too excessive, just the stupid number of effects cymbals.

^^agree Big kits (as in number of drums and cymbals, big sized drums are great) just look stupid to me.

Everyone loses sticks and I find that the gripping devices only give me blisters. When I saw The Mars Volta in March their new drummer (a prodigy) lost about eight pairs of sticks onto the audience and stage. At the very start of the Led Zeppelin DVD you can see Bonham doing his signature hand-hand-foot triplet roll and within seconds both his sticks promptly sail into the nether. Besides, I think it looks especaially cool if you hold the beat with one hand for a moment while you go fishing in your stick bag for another pair. I try to put sticks everywhere, in the Pringles tin taped to my hat stand, resting on the bass drum and propped up in a couple of rolls of gaffa tape (thanks to Mike Portnoy for the idea http://www.tamadrum.co.jp/world/artists/setup/Mike_Portnoy/index.html) next to my floor tom, it's even better than a stickbag.

Yeah it's a bit odd, with a name like 747 you expect them to be really big sticks (or I did, at least), but they're just a 5A diameter stick with 1/4" extra length and the neck of a 5B. Huge bead though, they give a really nice dark ping.

The grading system is not internally consistent. Even different brands have different ideas about what a 5A is. 8D is a Vic Firth size that's a 7A diameter with 5A length. They feel like (and have the lifespan of) cocktail skewers to me. IMO Pro-Mark 747s are the perfect all round stick.

I can only assume you mean the second entrance that I haven't cared to look for because the one I can see at 0:32-0:35 shows fuck all.

Better backing track: (3.52) wtf going on here then? Geez... when last I saw it. your video wasn't even looking at Matt at the right time.

No... worse. That video proves nothing. Mine shows him playing stuff other than the harmonics... while the harmonics are going, hence backing track, which is all irrelevant because we already know that it used to be a backing track and he now plays them live.

Firstly: Larger cymbals are lower in pitch. That's just how it works. Secondly: Zildjian cymbals are renowned for their inconsistency from model to model.

I think it's a guitar overdub playing in time to the snare roll. Live it'd be part of the backing track.

I use the red cam with the powershifter set as far away from the beater tower as possible, the beater one notch forward of centre and the spring at maximum tension. I also remove the toe stop and play barefoot.

Well sure, but the point I was tyring to make was that he sponaneously an unprecedentedly uses the double occassionally.

It's great to read articles by Jon and Juan on each other because they had such enormous respect for each others capabilities. Jon on Juan: http://www.ink19.com/issues/june2004/interviews/marsVolta.html Juan on Jon: http://www.bassplayer.com/story.asp?storyCode=5325 Ok, I's wrong. And Absolution (not the DVD).

No it's not. It's on the off beat. A) B) Your point? We're talking about this performance, not the video, and in this performance he is using a double pedal. He says he finds playing KoC hard work and has evidently given up on the hee-toeing. C) You don't think it's possible that maybe he owns... more than one pedal? http://forksdrumcloset.com/zc/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=7644 No you don't. The hats move because he's hitting them with a drumstick.
