  1. You do realise they get limited stage time at these big Xmas ‘festivals’, right? :erm:.

Muse have been doing these shows in the US for the best part of 15 years now and I think that’s the longest set I’ve seen at one. They’re not Muse headline performances, in so much as they’re now Muse’s show even if they are ‘headlining’. They’re not calling the shots.

I think given they probs had an hour’s stage time max (they had 50 mins at the one earlier this week), it’s a decent enough set - Algorithm, Break It To Me and Pressure from ST, a new cover, and the medley, which also contained some more Smashing Pumpkins according to setlist.fm.

    Sounds decent to me.

  2. Difference is in 2004/05, they just had less songs in general. Origin made up a decent chunk of most sets - New Born, Bliss, Plug In Baby and Citizen Erased were almost always played, Space Dementia and Micro Cuts popped up here and there, think even Dead Star got a look in from time to time. Back then though, it didn't matter - Muse were new to just about everyone who went along, it didn't really matter what had been released where and when.

  3. 1. Origin Of Symmetry

    2. Absolution

    Easy.

Then it gets really REALLY tough. Drones, for me, is pretty flawless DI through Revolt inclusive. That said, if you cut it there it would lose a lot of ground on the basis of Revolt not being a good album closer. Dead Inside, Reapers and The Handler are absolutely vintage Muse for me, arguably as good as anything they've ever done.

Black Holes & Revelations has incredible highs - Take A Bow, Map Of The Problematique, City Of Delusion and Hoodoo. And while they're not my favourite songs of theirs by any means, it has some of Muse's most iconic and best pop songs - Starlight, Supermassive, Knights. I do love Assassin, but I can't forgive its butchery. Such a shame it didn't come about during the Abso era or even Drones era. And then you have Soldier's Poem, which is just fine, Invincible which is meh and Exo-Politics which is utterly hateful.

Simulation Theory I can't see ageing spectacularly for me, despite the fact I really do like quite a lot of it. Algorithm, Propaganda, Break It To Me and The Void are excellent. I love the acoustic version of SH, The Dark Side is fine but the rest are so forgettable, except Thought Contagion, which is memorable for just how atrocious it is. It really is a horrific blott on the album.

Showbiz is wonderful. It's so bold for a debut album and I love the genuine sense of youthful exuberance that runs right through it, as well as the remarkably well developed emotional themes of the album. That said, Sober, Escape and Overdue just aren't very good and detract from the album as a whole. Muscle Museum, Showbiz and HT&ILY are top 20 Muse though.

The Resistance is just a bit dull. Even its highs, for me, MK Ultra, isn't all that memorable. I basically never ever listen to The Resistance. That is perhaps the best measure of it.

The 2nd Law is without doubt their weakest album. There isn't a single song on T2L that I ever get amped up about. Supremacy is fine, but it failed to hit the highs I hoped for from it. Survival is fun, but just stupid and cringeworthy. Animals has all the attributes I look for, but it leaves me cold and the outro is just SO dull, how they made a riff like that so boring I don't know. I do like and appreciate Chris's songs, but they weren't treated with great care. Perhaps the best bit of the album is Isolated System, one of Matt's best compositions. The fact I haven't mentioned half the album speaks for itself. I do think the final third of Madness is beautiful though.

    So, on that basis...

    3. Black Holes & Revelations

    4. Drones

    5. Showbiz

    6. Simulation Theory

    7. The Resistance

    8. The 2nd Law

  4. For me, Dead Inside through Revolt (inclusive) is all great. Sure, Defector is repetitive and Revolt bubblegum (I like it, it reminds me of Showbiz era Muse), but it's a very solid run. I actually don't mind Mercy at all tbh, I just wish they'd done a bit more with the synths in it.

  5. Well, that left me torn in so man ways.

    Upsides:

    - Algorithm; needed more b33f but was a really nice opener. Matt added some piano flourishes. Felt a bit odd though not having piano centre stage as he had to keep going back and forth.

    - Break It To Me; unfffff, so good.

    - Showbiz; because Showbiz...

    - Psycho; sounded just as massive as usual, with the added bonus of everyone in the room going wild for it

    - Plug In Baby, Uprising, Time Is Running Out, Supermassive; because these are the 'right' old songs to play, they still get great reactions. Hysteria would be as welcome as any, ofc, as would Bliss, Map, Dead Inside, etc.

    - No Madness, Dig Down, Undisclosed, etc. The actual song selection overall was pretty okay.

    Downsides:

    - Unsustainable; the song no-one wanted back really does seem to be back.

    - Thought Contagion; it's just fucking shite.

    - Matt prancing around like a dick. Just play your fucking guitar - look how wild everyone went WHEN YOU PLAYED YOUR GUITAR in the medley.

    - The medley; it's an inelegant solution to a problem that shouldn't exist. The band had (and always have) masses of stage time, they could have just played three of the five in full and interspersed them in the set. Also, by seeing bits of 6/7 songs, you feel simultaneously like you've seen half a dozen songs and no songs. It just didn't leave any lasting satisfaction for me.

    - No Something Human; yes, really, I was looking forward to hearing it

    - The length; this is the real killer for me. The band were on a shade before 9pm; Chris was tooting on his harmonica by 10.07pm (I have a message record of the moment!). Throw in Unsustainable (after six songs) and Isolated System (after a few more) and an encore break and you really do boil down to only about an hour of actual material.

  6. No way it will happen though in the modern Muse era. The last epic piano opening we had was Apocalypse Please - that was 13-15 years ago.

Iirc, they might have opened a couple of shows with Hoodoo in the BH&R era, but only a couple at most.

  7. Radiohead style, 17/5/3

  8. I think having heard the versions since (as that was the first one live), it's only got better and better. That version is very loose and Matt seems to struggle with the timing on the guitar stabs, which leaves a lot of dead space in the sound at times. It's def a good performance, but I think it's definitely got plenty of room to improve.

Looks like a fair chunk of that gig's been broadcast too, just found PiB. Really nice version of that too imo. Sounds like they're done some work on the backing vocals in the chorus to make them really stand out. Dunno if it's backing or some other witchcraft. You can hear it in the first chorus quite clearly. Matt's voice does give up a bit right at the end though.
