they usually release at least 2 or 3 before the album

    Before Drones it was (iirc)

    Psycho

Reapers (well it was premiered live anyway)

    Dead Inside

    Mercy

    The Handler

    (and maybe one more?)

Personally I thought they released too many pre-album singles for Drones and I intentionally didn't listen to The Handler until I got the album.

and before ST it was (iirc)

    Dig Down

    Thought Contagion

    Something Human

    The Dark Side

    (and maybe one more?)

I still think this is too many, but given the fact that Dig Down and Thought Contagion were released seemingly eons before the album was dropped (or even announced), it was less sensory overload than Drones.

Let me know if I my memory is incorrect on these.

I remember originally being so ridiculously hyped for Drones and outside of The Handler, Reapers and moments on the Globalist we had a pretty cheesy album that didn’t live upto the hype filled with radio singles like Dead inside, mercy, revolt and that awful ballad aftermath or whatever it was called.
hopefully this time we get something a bit more cohesive and muse abandon trying to make the top 40 with a pop song.

Lol I still love the whole album, even the tongue in cheek a cappella rewrite at the end.

I like to focus on the positive in general but between the snippets I've heard and bits of lyrics I've seen, I'm focusing my energies on being excited about an album announcement, future singles, and imminent tour announcement (fingers crossed). Not to be a bummer, I'm glad it's getting mostly positive response from the fanbase, it's just not to my liking quite yet. But, as I said, this seems likely to be an announcement single, meaning we may get an album release date as well. Maybe not. I am nevertheless so stoked to see activity from the band!

EDIT: On the topic of what the letters stand for, it was suggested on Insta or Reddit that the album title might be 'To War' which doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility. I have no qualms with it per se but it would feel a little bit like we're tipping towards the 'Drones' side of the Muse scale, which is not exactly my favorite shade of Muse but c'est la vie!

I was looking at them before coming to this thread and I had the same thought without having seen Reddit: "To War"

Aside from being Dronesy, this could also recall parts of BH&R and The Resistance thematically.

  4. Wait that live snippet was a new Muse song??? My dad randomly stumbled on that yesterday and showed it to me and all I heard was downtrend riffing and screaming and someone (Matt's son maybe?) head banging in the passenger seat... I figured it was just a random metal band the kid was into. This is NEW MUSE????

I'm stoked. Better than a usual Christmas present from them for sure! On the count of conspiracy lyrics... I think if Matt were an anti-vaccine, anti-lockdown sort of person he would've been very loud about it and probably would've persuaded the band to do some shows as soon as possible. I think judging from his past politics he's probably on the better safe than sorry end of the spectrum. So I would think any pandemic related lyrics are going to be inspirational (i.e. Get Up And Fight) or maybe based in conspiracies about the virus' origin. I would be very surprised if there were no lyrics specific to the pandemic. ... frankly I'll be a little surprised if the whole thing isn't a covid concept album. When's the last time Matt didn't write a whole concept album about world changing/ending events? OoS?

I always enjoyed Something human, and the second version is :facemelt: Yes, Dark side second version is amazing !
I recently watched the ST movie again, and I very much enjoyed Algorithm alternate version, but for me both versions are wonderfull, I couldn‘t decide (but I still cringe about the story of the film, Matt saving the world ... 🙄) but ok.

Oh I haven't seen the film. I think OoM just blinded me to anything new Muse for a little while, lol.

  6. Oh that's weird. I probably noticed this when I first got it but I didn't remember. Something Human is listed as being the last track on Side Gamma of the alternate reality LP in my deluxe book / record case, but its actually the first track on side Delta. Very strange.

  7. You know, I just listened to Simulation Theory for the first time in a little while yesterday, and today I thought I'd put on the alternate reality mix for the first time in even longer. I think a lot of the alternate reality versions are actually better than what made the record, and I love what made the record! Algorithms especially is just so much more dramatic as an alternate reality mix, and Pressure with the USC band is so much less stiff than the studio version. I also really appreciate that Muse mostly stayed out of the way of the band on that version of the track because they knew the USC band could carry it so well on their own. The Dark Side is also very HCM like with just Matt and the piano.

  8. I'm still amazed at how excellent the Origin Of Muse box is. You can really tell Dom, Matt, and Chris put a lot of effort into crafting a loving gift to their fans and a testament to their beginnings. Every page is unique, the various posters hidden within are wonderful, the volume of music contained on the 9 discs is like a dream come true, and the vinyl records are extremely well done. I really hope they do more boxes like this in the future. Maybe one in 5 or 6 years for the Abso-Black Holes era?

  9. Hyper Chondriac Music almost certainly. Not that they don't have other dark stuff (looking at you Space Dementia), but HCM just gets to the darkest corner of their sound and builds on it until it a black hole couldn't suck any more light out of it.

  10. Actually one of my favorite things about Muse and what really sets them apart from most other bands for me is just their attention to detail. Even in the early days they always had the sense to leave in a lot of the little noises and feedback bits and random stuff that would give the songs extra flavor and you would find on your like sixth listen. And even though they don't have a ton of that "live in the studio" sort of stuff anymore (although I can't help but think the count off to The Dark Side is a little nod to that), they're so meticulous about adding interesting easter eggs and a variety of layers to every song that it doesn't matter. That and Matt's innate ability to write engaging arrangements are possibly the two biggest factors that keep even Muse's most by the numbers material interesting for me.

  11.

    Here's some!

-The second guitar riff break in SS when Matt does a different pattern of distorted noises than the first one

-the morse code in Dom's snare pattern on Starlight 😂

-the high pitched violin fall right at the start of Unsustainable

-the outro chord progression on Mercy

-the wree-eerw sound and the panning back and forth on the soloed guitar riff at the end of Micro Cuts just before the bass and drums come back in for the last time

  12. Late to the party. Immediately downloaded it from iTunes before I listened and was not disappointed. Matt can whisper "bad" uplifting lyrics sincerely to me all day if the music is this good! Seriously that piano riff is just so deliciously off kilter and the chords are so Musey, and the orchestra fits so perfectly! This is what I love about Matt's songs.

  13. woah I was not expecting that!

Yes, please let Matt score a film, that would be epic! And not some stereotypical romance, only the grandest and most outrageous with moments of sincerely touching heartache could be worth Matt's time. lol

Love any time Matt does symphonic work, it always sounds great!

Who knows? Maybe one day we‘ll get the full gig 😎

This is better than nothing, only took them 7 years 🤪😂

    it begins !
making of Panic Station pt. 1

I loved the Panic Station video the day I first saw it and I still love it now. I'm not sure there's any content Muse have released in the past decade that more perfectly embodies their hyper-imaginative brand of focused silliness. The making of videos are great.

I'm not huge on gig releases, I stick mostly to studio stuff. If they're going by their usual pattern of two studio albums followed by a live album, it does seem about time for the next one though.

  15. Big Freeze just gets more and more cringey as it goes on. Collapsing in stellar clouds of gas is actually a kind of cool image, but "stop the loneliest force from becoming king of the universe" sounds like what I must sound like to native speakers when I try to speak French, lol.

  16. 1. The new album was The 2nd Law, it had basically just come out the very month I was introduced to them.

    2. The first one I listened to was The Resistance

    3. The song that really got me hooked on them was Time Is Running Out, and Uprising to a lesser extent

    4. The Resistance, Origin Of Symmetry, Drones, Black Holes And Revelations, Absolution, Simulation Theory, Showbiz, The 2nd Law

  17. To Muse fans, the list could go on quite a while. There are really very few Muse songs that don't have die hard fans, frankly I'm hard pressed to think of one I haven't seen lauded as a classic by someone on here. In my eyes....probably Falling Away With You. I feel like I see it get the short end of the stick a lot but it's a top 3 track from Absolution for me, no question.

By the world at large? Anything not named Madness, Uprising, Starlight, Supermassive Black Hole, Knights Of Cydonia, Time Is Running Out, Hysteria, or Plug In Baby. Muse is in such a weird but kind of ideal spot with commercial success. They can sell out arenas, have a massive global fanbase that will always buy their new albums, and they've had multiple charting hits and at least one Billboard number 1 record. That said, most people I meet aren't really aware they have more than one or two songs (though which songs those are depends on who I'm talking to). Muse isn't really a household name, despite having earned plenty of commercial success and always putting on some of the most spectacular live shows in the world. To me that comes down to two things: lack of consistent critical favor, and lack of a followup smash hit after Madness. By the former, Muse doesn't get that extra push from critics which helps less commercially successful bands maintain a high reputation, and can help to bring in new fans (for example, Fantano is notoriously unimpressed with Muse in general, though he does like TR). By the latter, Muse didn't cement their place in the singles charts by capitalizing on the success of Madness, which I believe is still their highest charting single. So to many casual listeners, they might appear like a flash in the pan or one-hit wonder, despite the reality being very different. They had a steady build-up over many years to that commercial breakthrough, but didn't stay on the charts. To me this is a near perfect recipe for Muse to be just plain underrated as a band. Okay maybe in 10-20 years people will look back on T2L and ST and think it's all a bit too silly, but they hopefully also look back on that run from Showbiz through BH&R or TR and think "wow, there's a band that really stands out after all this time and still sounds relevant!" Drones could go either way I suppose. I love it, but I know it gets a lot of criticism for being kind of heavy handed and half baked.
