  1. Yesss

Yeah, apparently the ones in front of me were queueing since 3pm the day before, so I can't really complain! And it wasn't so much that it was tiring, but the room was just too hot and I made the mistake of not drinking before. I've never been anywhere near that dehydrated in my life... and they charged $5 for one bottle of generic water

And yeah pretty much. Sort of like how no one knew (that could've been a great pun...) about the ovation GPs until Josh Homme started using them, and now they're worth $2500+ ... woodwork from korea, parts from germany, and assembled in the U.S.... they're probably worth around $1000 (excluding the QOTSA points, which add about $1500 - sometimes more)

I have no idea either. I feel like I should've been following them more closely...

Yeah man the heat and dehydration were a killer. There was a lot of pushing at my gig too so being at the front was very wearing. If it was bad for me at 6'3 and 180lbs then who knows how some of the smaller fans coped! All worth it though.

My favourite example is Jack White's Montgomery Airline. Those things are made of bloody plastic and now go for £000's hahaha. People confuse me.

That's my feeling as well. Feel like I failed in a duty haha. It always feels a bit more laid back with QoTSA though. For me the nature of their music is such that there's never a rush to get more. It fills you up so nicely. When it comes it comes but in the meantime there's plenty to go around

Compare that to Muse  ....

  2. Yup, two MASSIVE second albums for those two!

And James, it doesn't get much closer than that. This was my view for the whole thing. Standing that close got very very tiring!

Yeah I heard that the amps were a total flop cos of their quality for a long time until people started finding those raspy distortion sounds from them, all of a sudden they are 'vintage'

Also, speaking of next albums. What's happening with this next QoTSA release James? I've not been following closely at all but weren't they supposed to start work late 2014?

  3. Yeah absolutely, I went to Werchter for a variety of reasons, not just Muse. And didn't expect their set to live up to Psycho tour at all, surreal is a very good description of how it felt seeing them 5 yards away playing b sides. I never expected to have it matched but somehow they did it. For different reasons too which is almost more impressive.

I can definitely vouch for Marmozets live, seen them twice now and they really are great. Turbowolf was an odd gig just for the tiny size, but they just sounded huge from start to finish. Always funny seeing the drummer of the band pushing through the crowd with his kick drum before the set.

Ah okay, it's the 1485. That's interesting about the volume. Perhaps it may just be their age? The punch just deteriorating a bit. They do strike me somewhat as a bit of a novelty. It's something that if I bought one it would be for a secondary set up just for Jacking Off™.

  4. Looks great! Although I don't really know what to look for in them... But that price really doesn't seem too crazy, although import fees/shipping could probably add up

Edit: This could be useful, gives a good price guide on them https://reverb.com/price-guide/guide/8751-silvertone-1484-head-1963-grey

Definitely! Was such a great week!

That's a great reference, thanks. Will have to keep eyes and ears pealed for one in the UK...

  5. But if we don't know what a P90 is, how are we all here now?

    Well, because of the key.

And that's fair enough. The one QOTSA gig I've been to is definitely in my top three:

    1. Muse at Webster Hall (for so many reasons - meeting them, getting to see some rare songs, and just the fact that it was such a small gig)

    2. QOTSA at Capitol Theater (just an incredible gig all around, couldn't ask for anything else - although I sort of wish I hung around a few more hours to meet them)

    3. Royal Blood at Webster Hall (great set list, getting to lift Ben into the crowd at the end, as well as getting to meet him afterwards - really nice guy)

Sorry, just in a list making mood.

That is definitely true. I haven't owned my tone yet. :nerd: /TGP

And don't worry, I can handle it. Remember that time that guy convinced us that citizen erased was recorded on a 7 string?

Although, I guess that's a bit different since he was wrong

Yeah well, unless I see someone post a picture of themselves next to Matt in the studio with their username written on a sign round their neck, I'm pretty much okay with taking little insights like that with a bag of salt.

Oh shit okay are we listing? Right.

Ranking is hard for me, I know what gigs are up there but thinking about which was better is always a tough task. I think I'll go for:

    1) Muse - Rock Werchter. Yes, yes I saw them on the Psycho tour. And to be honest that gig could easily be here instead. I've picked Werchter because this set signed off probably one of the best weeks of my life, the sentimental value of this gig is pretty heavy. The setlist was also pretty damn good (got CE which I did not on the Psycho tour!) and the Mercy performance took me completely by surprise.

    2) QoTSA - Leeds. Basically just reiterating what you said. Flawless performance when I was still a bit unsure how I felt about them. Absolutely cemented them as one of my favourite bands and Josh Homme as the coolest cat on fucking earth.

    3) Tough one.. Royal Blood/Drenge (Werchter/Leeds). Drenge was another first time seeing a band, and they killed it. Two mosh pits came together and merged into one the size of a tennis court. Whole gig had such energy. Royal Blood twice in two days was pretty special as well though. And again the fact it was at Werchter probably just pushes them above Drenge.

Honourable mention as well for Turbowolf in Glasgow this October. Those guys are fecking mad.

    Check out this - http://www.andertons.co.uk/compact-pedals/pid36491/cid692/jhs-pedals-twin-twelve-drive-pedal.asp?LGWCODE=36491;56375;6335&gclid=Cj0KEQiAqK-zBRC2zaXc8MOiwfIBEiQAXPHrXrLIZIog7fnhWX4KEuRaM1-mGmsAX75gffLfdXKOSZEaArRV8P8HAQ

It's meant to give you the tone of those vintage Silvertone head's that White uses! One of those, a whammy and a big muff would definitely put you in the right direction! :awesome:

Yes! I've looked at those before actually. I was close to buying one before realising that with a bit of snooping there are some ~64 Silvertones (I think its the 1484 head Jack uses?) available for about £280.. This was a while back, however, so I may be getting mixed up.

If so, it seems a bit daft sinking £150 for a pedal that emulates a vintage amp that you can get for only 100 more! Big yes on the Big Muff though. It's only a matter of time before I have one of those. And please don't get me started on Whammys

edit: actually, having now gone back to search up the 1484 again. I've been reminded that the originals only had Volume, treble and bass controls on each channel. So to actually get a nice overdriven sound you have to crank the thing up to its 60 watt mega-volume. Which probably isn't what I want  The price you pay for toan.....

  6.

He's a mod - he let himself in.

There's a key under the door mat anyway, saves people from having to guess what a p90 is before being let in.

And I don't know. If it were me, I wouldn't be too bothered. Probably because my sound really isn't anything I've spent several years working on, since I change my pedalboard around way too frequently

That's interesting. When I saw them, it was just like in the recordings, just a lot better obviously. I remember when they were checking Josh's setup at the beginning and it sounded fucking massive.

No we shouldn't do that! He'd just tell us the truth.... and I don't want to hear that, as we'll find out it is in fact a gorilla solid state amp.

Yeah I mean it still sounded huge, easily one of the best gigs I've seen to. If I'm honest the Leeds bands seemed to have a few problems with sound that year so may have been unintentional that it sounded that way, I was quite surprised.

But yeah I don't know if I'd care giving away a sound. I actually have to find one first to be honest.

Right, I wouldn't want you to find that out so I'll hold back. I can only imagine the grief that would follow.

  7. Probably, though I recall he's said in an interview that he won't give up his recipe for #QOTSAtone because he's spent such a long time working on it.

But it does seem like the SFTD album tone was pretty straightforward. Setting up the mid control and rocker switch on the VT40 correctly with the right fuzz is pretty much half the tones on that album, but other ones just seem to be cranked amps on their own

His live tone is a bit of a mystery to me though. I recall the only actual distortion/overdrive pedal he has on his pedalboard is an old boss SD-1, but I think that was only really used as a solo boost.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSK6BN2eNjk

I don't know. If we don't get a definitive answer from @dominic_howard, I will probably have to resort to opium

I think I'd be reluctant too if everyone was digging around for my tone secrets, just to be a dick as much as anything.

It's the no BS nature of SFTD that makes it so hard hitting. He probably didn't want the tone of that album to sound very intricate or complex.

But absolutely, hearing them live was a lot different. To me it seamed a lot fuzzier with more high end, which may just be because of the venue (open air festival) but maybe he's found that deliberately.

God, all this speculation. Please someone just tweet Jesse Hughes so we know nothing again.

Or google for his live gear :D

Where's the hardship and torture in that? No no no this won't do at all. Who let this guy in?

  8. Thing is, that wasn't even the pedal setup he was using at the time. Supposedly the only pedals used on SFTD were a foxx tone machine fuzz and a z vex super hard on.

I imagine it would be a bit easier to Jack White, since we know more than nothing about his setup.

Jeez, it's easy to be pernickety looking back to find a specific, iconic tone and forget that at the time he'll probably have just chucked any old rig together and messed about till he liked something! Can get a good retelling of a sound from almost anything.

This did occur to me, yes. However, while it is always nice knowing more than nothing, it's also quite fun knowing nothing. Adds a bit of mystery; a spice. Either way, at the other end I get my fuzz and that means I wont have to resort to opium.

  9.

Here's a clip I did a while back using Josh's old GP into that pedal setup, but through a Fender amp (didn't have the VT40 back then)

I still sift through your instagram from time to time to find that, must be closest I've heard. Absolutely love it.

One day when its viable I'd love to sink some cash into nailing some of Jack White's tones. What can I say boys I just fucking love fuzz.

  10. Found it....

I've actually never used the distortion function on the OC-3, but it sounds pretty good other than that. I wouldn't say the sub machine can do that tone of Matt's that you describe though, but it's fairly versatile in that it has fuzz, and then the two octave options, as well as a series switch for the lower octave

That's very helpful thanks for finding that!

Yeah I looked at a few demos of the submachine, definitely the fuzz wasn't as raw as Matt's fuzz tone, but I did like the really fat sounds it can give you with the sub-octave settings.

All well and good, but to get those tones, with those amps requires volumes that will cause permanent hearing loss and get you evicted from home. Of course I'm not saying you don't have a sound grated studio or whatever, but don't get an AC30 or 1959 for your bedroom!

This is what usually causes all of the second guessing for me. I'm trying to get that middle ground of having something that isn't totally useless in a bedroom/home setting for messing around at low volumes, but at the same time I know that when I can crank the volume up when rehearsing I can find the tone that I really want.

I feel that if I buy for the bedroom then I'd be found wanting when the sound I am getting really matters, and it seems like a waste of cash! Like buying a Kia for racing because you know it'll be better for the school run in the mornings.

  11. Yeah it's the lead model. Mine probably needs serviced by now though

You must! Apart from not working too well with whammies and sustainers they sound great.

To be honest I'd buy any Vox just for the way it looks. Fucking sexy amps.

Yeah I definitely need to grab one soon - obviously being a certified f4nboi I have explored... other options besides the Zvex pedal. But having tried these and now that I'm investing into an amp in search for this sound, I feel like digging deep for some crazy fuzz is the only way to go.

I do love the sound of a good sub-octave fuzz as well, though. My Boss OC-3 has done me well so far for that kind of thing but there's not much to it. Aside from the fact it's more a distortion pedal than a fuzz, there's only one or two sounds you can get from it that you feel are worth revisiting, hence my interest in james' sub machine, which seems to offer quite a spectrum of sounds!

  12. Pretty sure Matt said he uses an AC30 for the basic sound then adds other amps to it (cant remember where I read this though) so you'll probably get it to sound close enough.

I get pretty close to that sort of tone with a fuzz factory and a Vox Escort 50 if that's any help

I saw a couple of those, are they the "Escort Lead" models? Not tried them out before, but the AC30C really caught my fancy when I got a chance to play one!

I must invest in a FF soon, I was looking at the updated model; the Fat Fuzz Factory, adds a sub-switch for really low-end oscillation. Looks interesting!

  13. It's gone, but if you're still interested in one, they're pretty nice. Only two issues - it just didn't seem all that loud, and to get a good balance of sub and machine, you'd have to turn the lower octave all the way up and the fuzz volume around 1 o clock

Still sounded good, but just a bit tricky to set the controls

Ah that's interesting. Essentially, I've gone far too long feeding Vile Orange through my abomination of a Marshall amp and I've been trying for a long time to work out a game plan to really overhaul my gear and find a tone I'm happy with. I'm very indecisive about what to get, which certainly isn't helping.

Primarily I'm after the really biting, fuzzy as F riff tone Matt has. Obviously impossible to achieve dead on without a full rig and a sound tech on your pay roll but hey a man can try. Tried for a while to try and find a good example of that tone from a live vid, best I could find was probably the SS outro at the HAARP Wembley gig but I'm sure I've seen better examples of it.

I'm fairly certain at this point I want to get an AC30. Whether it lends to that tone or not I'm not sure but I've played one a couple of times in a store and just love the sound from it. I will certainly second guess myself again at some point but I bet I'll end up with one soon. My only other problem is the pedals that I want to run into it, the choice is just confusing to me.

  14. That does look pretty top. So top that it leaves me gutted and I still got MotP, The Groove, Uno and the premiere of Dead Inside.

Still probably never gonna stop seeing Muse until they play Dead Star on the night I go though

Yup the fact I didn't hear it on the Psycho tour sent me deep into a hopeless pain. The memory of Bliss keeps it at bay however.

I think Dead Star (cult-like live show status aside) is one of my absolute favourite muse songs and I'm very sad that it's unlikely I'll ever see it.

  15. Strange... I did have to restart my modem after attempting this though.

Yeah same here -- wait what are you saving for? :ninja: At this point I just go to whatever gigs are within a certain distance really.

The 2013 stadium shows don't count, as I was half way through planning my visit to Mansons before even buying the tickets!

    yeah

I remember you (or maybe it was Bs) said Mercy was pretty #special when played live. I won't be seeing it at a festival, but hopefully it's similar for these shows

Hahahaha... You've got off lightly with a router. You normally expect a medium to large scale power surge at the least.

I am attempting to save at the minute to fund my illness. One that many on this board know intimately. Easier said than done however.

I think it was me that spoke about Mercy. It was incredible, and I don't really love the studio song much. It was as much the stage and display that they put on as the actual performance. I spent pretty much the whole song looking up at the sky with all the confetti and streamers coming through the lights. Was brilliant!!

  16.

    That's exactly how I feel.

Having said that, I bought tickets for another show only two days ago. I do want to go to at least one show on this tour, but it's more to see how many more shows I can add to my signature before it gets cropped for excessive size

Or I could just insert a post by Bs, but there's probably a character limit before that.

Yeah I bought my ticket because I feel like I'm obliged to. I know I'll love it and will have a great time, but having seen them twice this year already I'm thinking that I'm better off saving my cash for something else! (Wonder what .... :ninja: )

But I get the feeling that I should try and see them as much as I can since I was relatively late to the game (started listening to muse about 4 years ago) and who knows how long they'll keep putting out passable music

Awk, all will tell in time eh.

Also, don't try to put a Bs post in your signature. I tried that and all the lights in my house blew.

  17. Should add though that they should be playing two or three more songs regardless!

This is it for me. As much as they may be trying to tailor their set lists to the area they are playing, I think they still need to try and cater for every taste. When they are only visiting certain parts of the world once maybe every 5 years they should be trying to give everyone at least a little of what they want.

While saying that, I realise it's impossible to please everyone and it's easy for us to say this from a distance when we're not making the calls!

  18.

Yea I live in Germany now and my fingers are crossed for a more favorable setlist for the Paris shows in Feb/Mar. Also hoping they don't end up postponing or canceling bc of recent events.

I imagine that those dates are far enough in the future that they shouldn't be affected.

I have tickets for the second night in Glasgow. Just don't know if I will keep the ticket yet. Will have to keep an eye on the set lists when they start doing Europe.
