  1. How about IS or The Gallary?

Yeah I just edited my post considering that possibility, actually. It's kind of a shame. If they do feel like they need an instrumental spot for Matt's voice, they could showcase that weird interesting side they have. I imagine it'd be quite atmospheric live. But no, they go and play an experiment on something that was pretty much a fad. I thought it was alright when I saw it on the Unsustainable Tour, and it fit the theme of the show and the album, but please...let's move on from that.

  2. Posted on reddit how I understood that Unstainable was Matt's vocal break, but that I thought it was really just a poor choice considering all their catalog. Got a bunch of replies saying "Unsustainable is amazing live" etc.

Am I crazy? Some people out there believe Unsustainable holds up against like...90% of their back catalog? Please tell I'm not crazy. I don't get it

They've done Nishe and Forced In in the past, they could do The Gallery! Now that would be a good vocal break, depending on where it was placed on the set.

  3. Yeah it seems they're looking at these gigs as the warm up run for the actual Drones tour. Just keeping in shape, playing some of the new stuff on sound check, etc. I'm fairly confident they'll do 20/22 songs when the 360 tour kicks in.

Sucks for everyone paying for these gigs, though. And really, a stadium band on their 7th album playing 16 songs...is just having a laugh. I'm a huge fan of them but it's just unforgivable really. Look at all the acts out there and you see it's bollocks.

  4. It does seem like you're all living in the past. I remember when One Direction was always on the radio. When pop songs were popular. But that's really changed.

So...pop music ain't popular now? Can you see how that makes very little sense?

  5. They're rocking the house as usual. And the crowd is wild, as usual for portuguese crowds. Its being awesome but the fact they're pulling out the usual "greatest hits" setlist makes me less sad that I couldn't go this year. Hope they come around again for the drones tour x)

Those scratches before supremacy made me think it was going to be hyper music, since I didn't notice it was the 7 string... made me instantly regret not going. And then, Supremacy :p

    #edit#

did they close the main set with mercy? lol

  6. I'm totally addicted to the bridge! The tense instrumental with the dramatic vocals. It's definitely one of the highlights of the record. I think in contrast with all the popier stuff it's even stronger than it would be in an album full of stuff like that. So, so great.

  7. I'm not sure why everone is so mad at this

It's so infectious! I have it on repeat. Reminds me of some of the tunes from Hot Fuss that I fell in love with way back, mixed with some Queen harmonies and ABBA question and answer like vocal bits. It's just such a happy tune, and I don't really get that boy band-ish feel some people are getting. It does feel odd that "Revolt", having such an important place in the narrative, plays out like a pop track. I was expecting this to be really aggressive, like Assassin. But it just tickles all the right neurons so I can't help but crave that pre-chorus/chorus. It's like candy. Also everyime I hear that peeeersistent, I can't help it but imagine the whole band having a laugh in the control room. It's so silly.

I kinda get the feeling that Defector and this one actually were aiming for a similiar sound, but this one just flows much better.

  8. By the way, despite wether you actually like the album or not, does anyone feel like the rythm section is tighter than ever before? The synergy between bass and drums is just through the roof. That Reapers-Handlers combo is totally elevated by the way Chris and Dom are playing atm. It's not that they weren't tight. Maybe the punchy production is just making me realise that.

    Also I don't know if It's Matt's writting Chri's lines but they're amazing.

  9. Can't believe I'm saying this but I fell in love with Revolt AND Aftermath on first listen. Defector, I find a bit meh.

I have some mixed feelings, because some bits I love to death and others just seem to drag a bit. I can't believe they didn't go on for longer with the riff from The Globalist. They built it up so well, had a brilliant run through the riff and then just dropped it for a section which just drags and doens't really get my attention. I also don't really get how this is supposed to somehow be related to CE. I like 2/3rds of it.

I do like how it goes to the acapella ending. It's a cool composition (I think its helping that I can't figure out the lyrics at all, because what I've been reading just makes me laugh) and I can't help but admire their huge balls for finishing a modern album like that

Overall I'd say it's a solid record, but I do get why a lot of people aren't really into it. I think it's because the overall expectation was for them to really go and reconnect with their roots, and they didn't really do that. The Handler was like the closest thing to fan service and a true nod to oldschool Muse. Highlights to me are Reapers, Dead Inside, The Handler, Revolt and Aftermath. I think it's very likely a good chunk of music critics will rip it apart

Anyway, it all just seems to me like this was a lot of stuff that Matt needed to get out of his system. It's known he might have gone through a bit of a dark phase and this just seems like a bunch of stuff created by someone who desperately needs to do things and express himself without caring about what anyone else thinks. It just goes in so many directions and presents lots of different, frequentely conflicting feelings. Some of the lyrics are crappy, but the music itself at least seems quite sincere, which is something I didn't really feel in TR/T2L. Even though it's wrapped in the whole drones narrative, it feels very personal. Also I really enjoy how so much attention seems to have gone to all sorts of arrangements and harmonies. It's entirely understandable if you don't enjoy the record, but they really weren't slacking at all! Even the tracks I dislike a bit don't feel lazy at all.

It's better than Showbiz, TR and T2L. It actually feels like they took everything they learned on those last 2 records and applied it here. It will sit side by side with the other 3 albums, as I can't give them a definitive rank. Will be interesting to see what everyone thinks of it down the road.

  10. Same. Although the highlight is the vocals in the first part of the first verse. Love them so much.

This, so much! I was really into the verses from what I had heard form the live versions, but when I plugged the studio version and that first verse kicked in I was surprised by how well the vocals matched the intensity of the song. Idk if it's got anything to do with having a producer on board pushing Matt to do a gazillion takes but I really appreciate the attention to detail/the way they really shaped the delivery. I can't stop mumbling the whole verse everywhere I go.

Also today I got the chance to hook up the song to a proper stereo and I was blown away by how massive the rythm section sounds. I don't know if the track is overly compressed (the whole loudness thing) but in any case I'm really enjoying how it sounds, overall.

btw, this morning I could watch the YT video, but suddently in the afternoon it says it's not available in my country. Weird.

  11. I love the studio version!

I'm really enjoying the production for this album and it just really shines in reapers. So punchy! The track has loads of personality. I could say this for all of the tracks we've heard so far but Reapers really makes me realise how bland a lot of the T2L was. There were some neat tunes in that one but this song alone blows that whole album out of the water, imo.

Also I'm quite enjoying the vocal delivery on all the songs so far. Matt's vocals were really strong on the T2L (perhaps better they ever were) but sometimes I get the feeling that the delivery sounded a bit contrived, whereas in the bridge of Dead Inside or Reaper's verses they have this intensity and a slight "urgency" that I always felt was very unique to Matt. When I first heard that bridge kick in (in DI) I didn't even notice how the lyrics were so cheesy/basic, because the delivery seemed so sincere. It was the first time in quite a while that a new muse track actually felt like it had some emotional resonance.

Only thing I'm not that excited about is the outro. It kicks ass, and even kinda fits the whole narrative thing thematically, but musically it just feels way too alien to the rest of the song. It must be a face melter live, though.

  12. When it got out I was really into this. I was cautious because I'm usually very easily grabbed by easy pop tunes.

Well it's been a while now, and it's still really cool. I feel it's one of the best songs the band has written since BhAR. That bridge :D

  13. Crawling out of my lurker ways once again.

I actually love this track. It reminds me of a Prince-like groove mixed with Depeche electronica, expressed through very modern pop textures. The dramatical vocal delivery gives a really cool touch to it, and it's also kinda darker than their other pop stuff. It works very well.

I think it is a lot stronger than any single from the past two albums and I guess the really beefy rythm section helps.

Some lyrics are...shitty (especially those last two lines). Some other lines seem to be thrown in just for the sake of setting the theme for Drones. But in some instances the combination of lyrics and melody/delivery seem quite sincere (even if cheesy), which is a vibe I don't really get from Matt's vocal performances on most TR/T2L songs.

Yet, it's something quite pop so we'll see if it stands on it's own in the future.

  14. Lurker checking in too :p

Reapers actually sounds really cool (better than Psycho, to me). Only thing I'm a tad unsure about is that chorus, as Matt seems to be going for those high notes singers went for in classic rock tunes. His falsetto doesn't seem to be very appropriate for it, but it could be that he is still working on translating it to the live setting. I do like the melody though, and I'll just wait for the album version. I was impressed with the guitar wankery. I like how the solo progressed from that rock feel of GnR/ACDC to the typical morello-influenced dreamy guitar wails. Also, what really made an impression with me was Dom's drumming. It's not very typical of his and I think it's mainly where that different sound/approach (classic rock/ACDC/whatever) is coming from on this track

If anything, both the new track and the show seem to indicate the band is really going all out. I'm very glad to see that attitude is back.

By the way, huge Uno fan, so hyped they played it again. But judging from the video, it seems like Bellamy kinda shyed away from the mic on most of the high notes of the chorus. Kinda dissapointed.

  15. I don't think laziness is the problem. I think paranoism and plain fear of fucking up is the problem.

I agree with this. Besides I believe the direction the band took with TR influenced the choices for the sets (more ear-friendly tunes) a lot. Also, the crowd reaction seems to determin a lot of what they play. When they played CE at Rock in Rio 2010 the reaction of the crowd was terrible, people just didn't know the song. But then, why play CE at a festival and not on your own arena gigs

Still, I love to attend a Muse gig (altough so far I've only been to 2) and I'm always blown away, but I do agree that they have the potential to do even better, and they have showed tbat to people themselves over the last 10 years.
