  1. Nice to see a fellow drummer like myself.

Totally agreed with Maps and Invincible but the production of the album annoys me as the drums do not come out as clearly as they should. The drumming in Starlight is another Dom highlight. While it is incredibly simple and easy to play it completely carries the song and always gets the crowd involved live.

Yeah, Map has some of my favourite Dom drumming and it should boom a lot more.

  2. I never said you did either, but there is a certain attitude with some people that if it's simple it's just not good. Regardless, the complexity (or lack thereof) in Dom's drumming isn't the issue here, it's that his drumming (at least on the track's we've heard) has so little variety or energy.

There are plenty of fine drummers who play largely in 4/4 without going massively complex. System of a Down, At the Drive-In and Rage Against the Machine (see that point where Ashes In The Fall gets really angry) all spring to mind.

  3. I never said I wanted complexity, certainly not on a Billy Rymer or Chris Adler level. But there's a key difference between the likes of Newborn (which is straight 4/4, but is played ) and Psycho in terms of drumming. Newborn's drumming (and really the drumming on all of Origin) is busier and adds to the song's momentum.

i think he meant more just what we've heard from this album which while it works has still been very minimal, I don't think he was trying to rag on Dom as a drummer

I was criticising Dom's stylistic choices, because I don't think it does work all that well. I'd much rather Psycho had a busier, more fun drum part (see something like Pantera's Cowboys From Hell, where the drumming bounds along with the guitars) and Mercy needs something more lively.

Dom has never been a particularly complex drummer, I get that. But he's generally played with more energy and variety before, which added to my enjoyment of those songs.

  4. In a quandary as to whether I should get the Panasonic TS5 or Olympus TG-4. Latter is better but about £100 more expensive. Then again I'll probably keep it for a couple of years long.

  5. the chorus is kinda nice, but.. meh. I don't know.

I'll just wait for the studio version.

It's nothing we haven't heard before. Reminds me of Starlight and The Resistance, plus Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses? by U2.

I was hoping that Matt would dial the Mercury-isms back a bit.

  6. Damn, Olympus' new tough compact sounds sweet. More importantly, I really hope this means the price on the old one drops some more- £250 is probably the upper end of my budget just now.

  7. I take too many photos to justify using RAW unfortunately. I could probably build a house of the amount of hard drives I'd need.

I just like the idea, more than anything else. Plus video quality's ahead of most other compacts (though all I really need from that is for it to be on a par with a GoPro 2- my current compact's footage is discernibly worse than that).

  8. I really want a Nikon 1 AW1- it's about the only tough camera that does RAW files- but I suspect it'll be too pricey for me. Currently waiting to see if there's a replacement for Olympus' top-tier waterproof model coming soon.

  9. I love a lot of their new stuff, old stuff, and pop stuff, and there are only a handful of Muse songs that I genuinely dislike. This happens to be one of them now.

    Pretty much this.

I think people got the Bond vibe from the video rather than the actual song. :)

I'm now imagining this getting shoehorned into the end of Casino Royale. No, no.

  10. and florid bollocks is?... objectively speaking

Nothing can be objectively florid. I can't be arsed to bracket everything with IMHO. However, "greatest guy" and "magic" are the most obvious offenders to my ears.

  11. Love this.

This song has killed off all excitement I had for Drones. I knew I shouldn't have boarded this stupid hype train in the first place. :noey:

Same :( regardless of whether the sound is representative, the songwriting doesn't indicate good things.

  12. This discussion is even better than the post-Psycho reaction. Completely polarising

And it's immediately gone into "you only like it because you're a brainwashed noob drone" vs "you're only criticising because you're too nostalgic for old Muse".

  13. I fucking love it. The "Dead Inside!" is so cringeworthy though. Some vocal parts really remind me of Trent Reznor for some reason.

What songs? I guess you could liken it to Heresy's vocals, but the music's drastically different.

  14. It is actually hilarious how obtuse some Muse fans are on here, I get not liking the song, or some of the songs not being of a certain fans taste, but holy crap...It's like OoS and Absolution are the ONLY albums some people here like, and everything that sounds remotely different is somehow lesser  I just read a couple of posts before and someone was just slating Foo Fighters of all, whats wrong? Foo Fighter's music doesn't sound enough like OoS to you? jeez grow SOME range in your tastes people.

Most of us have some range in our tastes. I mean, Foo Fighters are hardly a million miles from Muse anyway.
