Mens t-shirt sizing

I'm looking at ordering a t-shirt for a guy with a 42 inch chest, but I've looked at the sizing guide and the item I want says a large (which is normally what he takes) is a 56 cm chest, which converts to about 22 inches! I'm really confused, because according to that none of the sizes are big enough. Clarification would be excellent, because I'm at a loss where they get 22 inches for a large t-shirt.

Depends on what shirts you're looking at; the sizes are a bit funky. I recommend going up a size from what someone normally wears, but I've found that doesn't hold true for every shirt on there, either.

Mens tend to be more consistent than womens, at least.
