  1. yeah, mines the S-shape one, its by rhythm tech. i think doms is the pete englehart one. he has used the S-shaped one too:happy: but only a few times from what ive seen.

Here, i managed to get some snaps of my crasher on my kit and off my kit (next to a cool cd i bought once! to get scale!):p

Very sorry to bring up the Crasher debate again, but to elaborate on this quote: Doms crasher might not be 11" or 15" because it isn't a Rhythmtech Crasher, at least not the ones that are available to the public - its a totally different design. Im not too sure of the history of this instrument, but there were some copyright issues and stuff from the Engelhart design (which I think was the original) and the RTech one and a few others too. Interestingly when I picked up my 15" Rtech crasher at the drum shop, it had a tag on it with the price and 'Engelhart model' written underneath, so I think RTech now have the patent on making Pete Engelhart crashers, but there are other more traditional ones out there - like the ones Dom seems to use.

  2. Some cymbal companies definately take old ones back, but I dont think theres a 'public collection' type thing, which could be handy. I know Sabian were taking in old cymbals at their stall at download this year, but obviously most the people taking advantage of that were endorsees anyway, or otherwise rich enough to be irrelevant!

  3. I know Adam, its ridiculous. + the police couldn't do it personally because of the 7 hour time span when the crime could've taken place, being too long. I can understand not having the manpower for trawling through several days of footage; but just overnight footage??!

To answer the_man, hopefully insurance should cover just about everything, minus paying excess etc, but as usual its a lengthy, slow process - getting some quotes now.

Could have been worse of course: they chose to leave about 5 grands worth of premier genister, my laptop, loads a cymbals/percussion and a treeworks mark tree!!!

  4. jeeze! :(

dya recon they knew they were in there then?

Well I was renting this car parking space on a small lot in a posh complex of flats in the city centre. It seemed to be fairly secure, with keycode access, electric shutter gates etc... Id just moved into a flat myself about 15mins walk away and hadn't got storage anywhere yet, so I occassionally left my gear in the car overnight in this car park after gigs and stuff. Seems though that there have been several incidents of late at this place, either people from the flats doing it, or more likely someone has the code or has just been let in by someone else. Fairly sure then it was just opportunist as the stuff was pretty much on display. Certainly the last time I do that, no matter how safe the place seems!!

There was CCTV covering the car at the time, but its proving impossible to find anyone who is 'qualified' to download and look at the footage!!

  5. STOLEN!

    how?

    :(

Some arsehole smashed up my 4x4 whilst it was in a locked up private garage. They took the SPDS flightcase with the sampler, headphones, triggers etc inside. They also took my iron cobra and box and a large flightcase with my mixing desk, kd-7 and drum dial in it.

oh and also my stick bag.

  6. Oh ok, just presumed that because Dom only has about 3 electric sounds he would be using a small module and have no need for the sampler. I thought morgan would be in charge of the spds, as there surely must be a patch change half way through starlight to switch the handclaps off - or is dom triggering them from the rim and not the snare??

  7. Question for Adam...

Adam on your site where did you get the information from about the SPDS? Only interested cause ive never seen him use one and there never seems to be one around his kit.

Also when you talk about triggers, are you suggesting Dom triggers backing tracks from the floor tom rim? or have i read it wrong? I always presumed Morgan is now in charge of tracks, + triggering from the rims seems very impractical...

  8. anyone see Isle of W fest? Have they ditched the backing track/funny noises on SBH? the snare sample is still being triggered but the floor tom rim shaker sound seems to have replaced by morgan playing a cabasa! - random...

  9. HAHAHAHAHAHA:LOL:

i should be able to manufacture something to hold it onto a boom stand, my Dad's obsessed with metal work and engineering, he's customised my hi hat stand to make it more powerful and durable, fancy selling your crasher mr richie jazz?:D

lol no fraid not: im gonna try find a boom arm i dont need and cut off the screw bit of the cymbal mount - should work i think... they do have a stupid design though........your dad should patent something!!

  10.

EDIT: I really want a ribbon crasher, i've got a shop that could deliver it to me for around £50ish, but i don't know if you need a specific stand that only fits them or i could just buy a normal boom stand? any help?

BEWARE!! the mount on the rhythmtech crasher lies directly below and underneath the metallic strips: therefore not ideal for mounting on ordinary cymbal stands unless you hacksaw a bit of the metal rod off, so if the bolt comes loose you dont get the cymbal mount rod ploughing into the playing strips. Ive just got a crasher and not used it yet so gonna try and find some special mounting device, + of course see how it actually works on an ordinary stand.

EDIT: it looks from this pic that part of an ordinary stand has indeed been cut off

  11. Has anyone noticed that in the gallery on the starlight dvd on the drum mixdown: it bares no relation to what Dom plays on the record or what he does live, totally different beat.....whats going on there???

  12. Please don't be mean to me. You'll baby jesus cry. :(

Are you quire sure "polyrhythm" was the word you were searching for? Funny I always thought KoC sounded extremely plain and non-busy.

    ....yes, quite sure....

  13.

    What? Like this?

    C|x---------------|
    H|--x---x---x---x-|
    S|----x-------x---|
    B|x--x---xx--x---x|

I can play that ^^^, but im certain the extra bass drums are in there which fucks me right off!

Yes like that - thats my general interpretation. Im sure though he does through in extra notes here and there though with his flexible foot!!V.difficult to tell for sure.

He also adds the gong bass sometimes like this (and other places) may/may not be replacing the BD on the same note.

    C|x---------------|

    H|--x---x---x---x-|

    S|----x-------x---|

    GB|-------x--------|

    B|x--x---xx--x---x|

  14. It's definately this:

    C|x---------------|
    H|--x---x---x---x-|
    S|----x-------x---|
    B|x--xx--xx--xx--x|

ive studied this song for too long now trying to find out what he does - plus ive seen it live twice. lol

Yeah this is the general jist of it....not sure about the second bass drum beat with the snare though....maybe.

What Muserist said I think is nearly right although the galloping nature of the song means Muserists version would probably work if it was swung a bit.

As for the whole beat sounding busier than this with ghost notes etc I think its a bit of an illusion - Dom basically plays the relatively simple beat above but its this combined with Chris's bass and more importantly the Arpeggio synth backing throughout the whole song that makes it sound even more ferocious - ithe build up of layers creates tight fitting polyrhythms.

Dom also on occassion throws in an off beat tom/gong bass note (usually on with the last bass drum note of the bar) which adds a bit of depth..

Also are people suggesting Dom plays this song with the heel toe method??? I havnt mastered this method yet...and it would interesting to know for sure....

I can play KOC with foot flat on the pedal at the correct speed - Its not too difficult once you get the hang of it - although if your are not used to playing such it takes practice!! Im getting better at this song but a first it gave me chronic foot ache playing all three verse sections!!

  15. setup2.BMP

    setup1.BMP

Its used in Meglamania for one - seems to be triggering an ambient concert bass drum type sound....dont thinnk its used for click tracks though. Having said that Im not sure how much stuff was actually on click during the hullaballo period....

  16. yes, he does. the very first beat. boom ta ba boom boom. he is hitting a black pad over the 14".

I mentioned this before......... He had a single rubber pad trigger just between his two floor toms.. I said I thought it was his old way of triggering backing tracks...

  17. Really on the snare??? I thought he would have, just never actually been able to see it.. QUOTE]

Actually scratch that - its blatantly obviously he uses a snare trigger. All the triggers he uses are from the Roland RT-10 Series.

Obviously used for SBH + I think he has assigned hand claps for at least part of Starlight.. Spotted any other uses???

  18. Really on the snare??? I thought he would have, just never actually been able to see it.. Was right at front at leeds festival - amazing. + the triggering of the "shaker" in SMBH from the rim is pretty nifty.

+ When Doms riser was wheeled onto stage I could have sworn at the back he had a Roland SPDS sampling pad setup. Anyone know of this? Wouldnt at all surprise me with all the sounds muse use, Just Ive never seen him actually using one live on any footage..

  19. hmmm that definately is an acoustic trigger - looks to me like a Roland RT 10 T. However I have definately heard performances of this WITH the shaker remaining while hes off the rim - Maybe hes changes his practice now though...who knows...

Also I still cant find any evidence of him using snare/bass drum trigs ..anyone???

+ there is still a backing/click track (especially if theres no snare or BD trigger {although evidently the shaker aint on it!!}) for all the other sounds in the song - theres an outside possibility that morgan triggers them or maps them to a keyboard patch (in fact now hes there that is pretty likely!!!) Would be interesting to know exactly what morgan controls in terms of the backing tracks muse use/used to use...

Speaking of triggers - I think dom used to have a Roland/yamaha pad trigger just between his floor toms, back in hullabaloo days. Anyone know what this was for??? Of course it could have been used to trigger backing tracks, whereas now i think he uses a pedal...
