  1. This is a strange album. I certainly like it more than I thought I would. It never dips as low as Drones (the back half of which is damn near unlistenable), but it never made me as happy as The Handler did either. I quite like the 80's pastiche sounds, but then again the best songs sound better in their stripped-down alternate versions. Eh. The Void is really good. Get Up and Fight is ass.

  2. Really? I don't really mind the abrupt transition between them. It comes quite shockingly, which I like.

But I'd also love the "guitarstep" section more if they increased the instrumental volume in comparison to the robot voice, which detracts a bit of intensity to it mixed at those levels.

Yeah the instrumental is better. Song should have more pay-off too tbh.

  3. *ahem* You could always buy the CDs from a friendly fellow board member *ahem wink wink nudge nudge*

  5. No word on any additional material from the Drones sessions I assume? I know it's been a while since b sides were a thing.

I'm dissapointed that after being promised a heavy and back to basics album we ended up getting a concept album with idiotic "positive" sounding tracks like Defector, Revolt, Aftermath and even though Mercy is lyrically darker, it still sounds chirpy and radio friendly.

It feels to me like the album hardly explores the darker forces or the opressors, and as said above the jump from psycho to mercy is just stupid. There needed to be atleast one darker and heavier song after psycho. After Psycho is meant to be the darkest point of the album and it doesn't feel dark at all! You get Starlight Part Two, Reapers which is fun and bouncy and Classic rock power cheese and then finally you get The Handler which spares the blushes a bit.

But after Handler it's into the Queen cheese and drawn out cheesy ballads. Globalist is just a mess too. Don't even want to talk about that load of rubbish!

Revolt didn't even need to happen, could have easily gone Defector to Aftermath. It's such a stupid track and I don't know what Matt was thinking writing it, it's almost bordering on self parody.

Right there with you buddy. It's not unusual for me to be disappointed by the lack of dark material on a recent Muse album, but in this case it is heightened by a sense that the concept itself warranted more of it. The Handler also showed that they can do it well.

The last section doesn't just suck, it's Resistance 2. We already had the political uprising waffle for an entire album, hell it popped up a lot on the last 3 lps. Surely there was something more interesting to do here.

  6. I really want to love this album but it falls off so hard in the last half. :(

I like the concept approach, I think it focused Matt's nonsense lyrics, but the heavy parts fit the theme best and are too few in number. I don't understand why there wasn't at least one track that really delved into "Drone" mindset. The jump from Psycho to Mercy is just odd. Why were Revolt and Aftermath so lame too? Those are some misleading titles.

  7. I was thinking earlier how much better this would be if:

The part where the drums kick in fully was twice as long.

    The Elgar part was removed.

    That's all it would've taken.

So much this. I might just edit the song myself.

  8. Wouldn't mind hearing a reworked version of this myself. If there's enough of a reaction, maybe Muse themselves will conjure a different arrangement, like when they reinstated the extra parts of Assassin.

  9. Mini Review

Dead Inside - 6/10 A grower, starts the album off in a bizarrely effective manner.

Psycho - 6/10 A riff so cool you'll play it, loudly; but you know deep down it's shit.

Mercy - 4/10 The Starlight sequel no-one needed, with worse lyrics.

Reapers - 9/10 Banger. A couple of hokey lines and unecessary robot voice away from a 10.

The Handler - 10/10 A classic already. Has a deliciously dark sound not heard since Fury.

Defector - 6/10 Muse songs of late always walk the line between cool and totally lame. Never has a track been as aggressively both at once. It kinda, sort of works?

Revolt - 3/10 Sounds like that generic pop music you hear in Poundland. Offensively inoffensive.

Aftermath - 3/10 This song starts out really strong but nose dives off a cliff. It makes you beg for it to end before it finally does the polite thing and die.

The Globalist - 7/10 Exceeds its grasp but has many nice turns.

Drones - 4/10 At least twice as long as it should be, it's novel but becomes dull very quickly.

5.8/10. Not great, better than 2nd Law, and there's 2 songs that I genuinely love on here.

  10. believe what you want. I know that Psycho was treated as a single in all but name (promotional single) so that more attention would be focused on the lead single, Dead Inside. You also didn't provide any proof that they did that "multiple times" for the last album, and "making of" videos are filmed concurrently with the video shoot by Tom, so that's irrelevant to my point about redundancy. Making ofs are different products with different goals than marketing the song as they only highlight how the video is made.

Just a quick look at Muse's official youtube page shows that Supremecy and Madness each had a lyric video first, followed by a full music video. It's pretty much an industry standard across the board, an easy way to promote a song twice.

It's okay to be wrong from time to time. Promise.
