Agreed, it sucks, but it is too widespread (music, sports, etc) to do much about it. I think Muse should have a presale ONLY for forum members who have been registered for a set period of time and no recent registrees get in. But who knows how many of those registered are scalpers in disguise? Would be cool if their isp's could be traced to those online sites so they could be identified and banned!
Well, there's actually quite a bit that can be done about it, but it would require a re visioning of the industry as a whole.
-
I know it's very common. I just think it's unfair. There should be a better control of that phenomenon. The fact that it's very common and that it happens with every band doesn't justify that we allow that.
Oh well, I'm just glad I got my ticket on the official website (for this gig, the bell center website). I won't have to deal with suspicious resalers!
Well then sign here...
-
Also, one thing you forget to mention is that Ticketmaster held back all the good tickets such as most ga floors and lowers near stage so they can use themselves and resell on TicketExchange. So I think pointing the finger totally at brokers is a bit uncalled for.
Um, Ticketmaster at this point IS a scalper/broker. Ticketmaster has two faces. The one we see when we log into ticketmaster.com and the one we see when we're redirected to ticketsnow.com. What I wrote was apt and appropriate for the situation. I stand by it.

Must agree with making friends with security. At Austin in '05, one of our group had a bad case of tonsillitis and was feeling severely dehydrated. The security guy kept an eye on her and gave her water.
That wasn't the one who did the flying tackle on me I take it, haha.

If you are in seats, DON'T EXPECT TO SIT!!
If you're in seats, more importantly, don't tell the people who stand up for muse to "sit the fuck down." That happened to Mary, Lara, Liron and I at the SF show in 2007. Bastards.
-
It's usually calmest in front of Chris (all that head-banging is hypnotizing??), much crazier in the center and in front of Matthew.
Center stage and to the left is ridiculous. If you're in the center and you expect to not be moved by a sea of people, forget about it, lol. If you're in the center and worried you won't have a good view of Matt, forget about that too, because most likely the crowd will pick you up a few inches off the ground the tide will push you to just a few feet away from him. Been there, done that, lol.
Its not so bad, you just have to get over the claustraphobia/loss of control. Its a mental trick. If you can lose yourself for a bit, you'll be fine.

Heh. Well, I made a petition. Hopefully its not all for Naught.
http://www.petitiononline.com/musetix/petition.html
I stated that it was in regard for US ticket sales, as I feel US muse fans can't speak for how business is done abroad as we have no idea what the laws and consumer base are like, but certainly the issue affects more people than those in the US.
-
Yeah, I think paperless tickets are a start in the right direction, but still not the answer. Its too much of an inconvenience for the consumer and limits upward mobility in the sense you can't sell your tickets if you need to.
-
that totally does suck!
Paperless tickets for the win. Seriously bands need to start doing this NOW! It ensures the actual fans will get tickets and scalpers absolutely cannot do shit like that.
The only problem with paperless tickets is that if you need/want to resell your ticket becaus eyou can't go (and when I say resell I mean face value) you can't, can you?

Space Dementia, Knights of Cydonia, maybe Hysteria
Good ones. He's heard KOC and Hysteria. I'll try Space Dementia though. And now that I think about it...Screenager is a good one too.
Dude, he was so unfamiliar with MUSE that I first showed him short clips on you tube and said, "That's my husband drumming" and he TOTALLY BELIEVED ME! ROTFLMAO!
-
hooray for getting another Muse fan! Have you shown him Hullabaloo or just the Glasto and Wembley gigs?
And Dom will go bald before Matt does
Just Glasto and Wembley. I have Hullabaloo, but I live in America, so they only way I can play Hullabaloo is if I can find a region free dvd player that supports PAL format. I let him borrow the DVDs though.
Oh, he's even more upset cuz his WIFE has heard of MUSE and he hasn't! And she is not into the same kind of music as he is AT ALL, LOL! I just laughed, patted him on the shoulder and said, "Sorry, your wife is hipper than you are!" HAHAHHA!!!
Apart from Stockholm Syndrome, and Assassin, what are some really good songs you guys can think of that really showcase Dom's drumming ability?
Butterflies and Hurricanes come to mind...but what else?
My friend/instructor is all impressed with Matt, but not so much with Dom, lol!
-
Oh yah, my dear friend who I learn drums from is in his 40s or so. Been playing drums since he was 16. He's very good. And we have the same taste in music yet...
He has NEVER heard of MUSE. He has heard of a bunch of great bands out and about today but NEVER MUSE. So I show him Wembley and Glastonbury and all that. And he likes it. Says its great, but then goes on to say "But I can't see how they would ever be big in the US. There's just no way. They're too different." So after I giggle a minute I say, "But they've played to sold out shows of 20k in the US. Like, The Forum and Madison Square Gardens." And then he just gets mad cuz he realizes he might be a little out of touch with the music scene these days.
But, at least MUSE have a new fan.
He's also convinced Matt is going to go bald by 40. LOL!

Hewwo!
I posted a while back asking advice on learning drums, etc. Just thought I'd post an update n'stuff.
First of all, thanks to those who responded with their advice and opinions back when I asked. I've been having a blast learning how to play even though everything right now is pretty basic in the scheme of things. I practice a couple hours every night. I don't have my own kit, just a practice pad, a kick pedal I bought used (and a bass drum practice pad), but it helps. Been thinking about buying a used hi-hat stand etc so I can practice a bit more with that since I'm starting to getting a little more complicated with the hi hat.
My friend/instructor DOES have a kit however, and I always try to play as much and as long as possible at his place so I can get a feel for the real thing.
Its been a couple of months now, but I can keep time with my hi hat foot which is kewl. It seemed impossible two months ago, but with regular practice and getting down some basic beats I can manage it now.
Read the stuff about the DW pedals--scary. My friend uses DW pedals. I hope I don't break one of his while practicing! Also read the bit about single stroke rolls. The friend I'm learning from knows some rudiments, so the single stroke and para diddle are two things he taught me at the beginning. I have my single stroke down pretty well now at probably 160 bpm. After that it gets ridiculous and sloppy.
Anyway, I think I have enough basics down that I might be able to attempt playing something simple like TIRO from beginning to end. If I get it down well enough maybe I'll join the you tube muse cover crowd.
BTW, Alyssa, your Muse covers are awesome! Its great to see another girl playing drums.

Most of the time I use "heel-up" now, where you use your whole leg. I used to use heel-down a lot, but now only for soft jazz and stuff. I used heel-down a lot starting out. Not sure why.
And I'm pretty sure Dom uses heel-up most of the time as well.
But it's safe to learn to be comfortable with both I guess!
Starting out I used heel down too cuz it seemed natural, but I found I didn't really get the impact or power I wanted, so I tried a bunch of different things, and heel up seems to work best right now...
-
Alright, any advice for taming a stupid foot? Difficulties getting power with my bass drum foot. suggestions? i.e. heel down/achored? heel up? how do you guys use/place your foot on the bass drum pedal? how does dom do it? cheers! I've been trying a bunch of different methods, but the one I seem to favor involves sorta using my whole leg and I'm not really sure if that's very effective, or not, or if I am just going to end up building a bad habit.
-
good advice... if you can work stuff out.. you should definitely try for a few hours to work something out before turning to tabs.. and i find drums the easiest instrument to work stuff out for
Â
I don't really understand drum tablature at all right now, so that shouldn't be a problem. =D
Â
I can read music in a limited fashion but only for violin as that was the last instrument I studied @ length.

Started learning drums recently. Was wondering if you guys had any advice for a muse fan starting out on drums for the first time. i.e. should I dare to try and learn how to play the drum bits for a muse song now, or no? Also, what kind of kit/bits/bobs should I start out with? I live in an apartment/flat so all I've got right now is a practice pad and some 5b drum sticks. I take lessons from a friend once or twice a week where I get to actually play with a REAL drum set. Just looking for input from fellow Dom Howard fans.

I Arrrr!
same..which to me would be boring!
You might as well watch MUSE perform if you wanna watch that!
Exactly!

Re: Industry vocals...
Was reading some of the comments, and I just wanted to say that I didn't think the vocals were that bad at all. He just sings a different style compared to Matt (Bellamy) and when you're doing a cover...you don't necessarily *want* to sound like the original, so yeah...not bad really. I enjoyed the whole thing over all. Vocals and instrumental parts.

Whoever said they soudl cover Baby Got Back, I second that motion...
Can't you just imagine hearing Matt recite the words...
I like big butts and I can not lie
You other brothers can't deny
That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waste
And a round thing in your face
You get sprung
Wanna pull up front
Cuz you notice that butt was stuffed
Deep in the jeans she's wearing
I'm hooked and I can't stop staring
Oh, baby I wanna get with ya
And take your picture
My homeboys tried to warn me
But with that butt you got
Makes me so horny
Ooh, rump of smooth skin
You say you wanna get in my benz
Well use me use me cuz you aint that average groupy
I've seen them dancin'
To hell with romancin'
Sweat, wet, got it goin like a turbo vette
I'm tired of magazines
Saying flat butts are the thing
Take the average black man and ask him that
She gotta pack much back
So Fellas (yeah) Fellas (yeah)
Has your girlfriend got the butt (hell yeah)
Tell her to shake it, (shake it), shake it, (shake it), shake that healthy butt
Baby got back
(LA face with Oakland booty)
I like'em round and big
And when I'm throwin a gig
I just can't help myself
I'm actin like an animal
Now here's my scandal
I wanna get you home
And uh, double up uh uh
I aint talkin bout playboy
Cuz silicone parts are made for toys
I wann'em real thick and juicy
So find that juicy double
Mixalot's in trouble
Beggin for a piece of that bubble
So I'm lookin' at rock videos
Knockin' these bimbos walkin' like hoes
You can have them bimbos
I'll keep my women like Flo Jo
A word to the thick soul sistas
I wanna get with ya
I won't cus or hit ya
But I gotta be straight when I say I wanna uhhhh
Till the break of dawn
Baby got it goin on
A lot of ??? won't like this song
Cuz them punks like to hit it and quit it
And I'd rather stay and play
Cuz I'm long and I'm strong
And I'm down to get the friction on
So Ladies (yeah), Ladies (yeah)
If you wanna roll my Mercedes (yeah)
Then turn around
Stick it out
Even white boys got to shout
Baby got back
Baby got back
Yeah baby
When it comes to females
Cosmo ain't got nothin to do with my selection
36-24-36
Uh-uh
Only if she's 5'3"
So your girlfriend rolls a Honda
Playin' workout tapes by Fonda
But Fonda ain't got a motor inna' back of her Honda
My anaconda don't want none unless you've got buns hon
You can do side bends or sit-ups, but please don't lose that butt
Some brothers wanna play that hard role
And tell you that the butt ain't gold
So they toss it and leave it
And I pull up quick to retrieve it
So Cosmo says you're fat
Well I ain't down with that
Cuz your waste is small and your curves are kickin
And I'm thinkin bout stickin
To the beanpole dames in the magazines
You aint it miss thing
Give me a sista I can't resist her
Red beans and rice didn't miss her
Some knucklehead tried to dis
Cuz his girls are on my list
He had game but he chose to hit 'em
And I pull up quick to get wit 'em
So ladies if the butt is round
And you wanna triple X throw down
Dial 1-900-mixalot and kick them nasty thoughts
Baby got back
Baby got back
(4 times)
Little in the middle but she got much back
...
Oh yeah, hell yeah. That would rock, lol.

Lapdance by N.E.R.D.
Did I say that already, has someone said that laready?

personally i think its better to have lessons somehwere that has there own kit, to see if u want to stick with it.preferably someone working from home as a professional teacher or through your school. the latter is better cos u get our of lesons then... then after a few months look into buying a kit, something like a pearl forum or a second hand export ex or even elx. i find that a mix of being tought the technical side of drumming and working out all my own songs and material in my own time makes for a pretty balanced way of approaching it. it was four years of lessons before i got my own kit and i found that that really spurred my playin on rather that hindering it becuase i was so eager to play that whenever i got the chance i worked hard to make the most of my time. still its very much a personal thing and many musicians not just drummers have learn by ear and trial and error and have become very accomplished in there field of expertise. it does not make you any less of a musician if u decided to take the tought route or just by ear, as many many people may make u feel. all i can say is just take it easy and have fun, and well done for picking the nosiest and most annoying to move around instrument...
Heheh, well, the thing is I'm 23 and well out of school. I looked at my college and they don't offer any precussion lessons or anything. So I guess I would have to go to a shop or studio or something. I haven't had the money yet to invest in lessons, so I've been trying to teach myself basic things by ear. I want to get a pair of drum sticks and maybe a practice pad or something so I have something bang on besides furniture.
I sound really good with chopsticks, china, and silverware.
Thanks for the advice though. I will look into finding someone who teaches and has their own kit, etc, as you recommended.

Ok, like, I really want to learn how to play the drums, and have been reading a lot of material on the net, and following threads and such. how do you guys recommend someone go about learning how to play the drums? i.e. where would you start?

The problem with paperless ticketing is that if you can't go, for whatever reason, you eat the cost of the tickets. There needs to be a refund policy if paperless tickets are used, otherwise I'd ahve to say its a bit of a shit system.
