  1. Psycho - I just wish it was slightly shorter.

    Reapers - like the live version much more than the one on the record.

    Bliss - those arpeggios at the beginning are beautiful

    Blackout - I would nominate Blackout as the most beautiful sad song ever written...

    Fury - a beast live. And again the song gains so much when played live. That reverb in the verses. Fury is so cryptical.

    Butterflies and Hurricanes - the song is the quintessence of Matt's musical talent.

    Invincible - my favorite live version of this song was played at Wembley. Those intro and solo are hypnotising...

    Muscle Museum - I don't know why but I see some connection between Muscle Museum and Fury. I think that Fury could go very well right after Muscle Museum.

    Map of the Problematique

    City of Delusion - epic as hell.. Miss it very much.

     

    And I'll never stop complaining that Glorious and Hyper Chondriac Music are not played live. I still have a speck of hope though...

  2. I voted for the solo in Invincible. It's marvelous and sounds much more complicated than it really is. But if there's a solo that takes my breath away then it's definitely the one in Hyper Chondriac Music. Those first several notes are so emotional and depressive...

  3. Despite all the criticism, I can't help but sing along to Revolt :) I really like the part when Matt sings "You can revolt...." and then the solo kicks in. Sounds fabulous.

  4. I swear I must be listening to a different version of Mercy that's lacking this amazing bassline everyone's going on about.

     

    Everyone has their own description of "amazing". I just mean that I like the bass sound in Mercy very much. Not to mention the Handler:)

After reading lots of comments on lots of different threads (but mostly this one and the Your Reviews thread), I've come to a conclusion: Nobody on this messageboard loves this album more than me. FACT. I'm very happy, whilst everybody else is either angry, disappointed or merely content. If anyone out there is as happy as me, please let me know!

     

     

    I love Drones too. And the songs that I criticized in the beginning are growing on me more and more every day :) And Revolt no longer seems awful to me. Its solo is so stylish - I can easily listen to the song and wait for it :)

    The transitions in The Globalist now seem rather logical and I'm starting to think that Matt's description of the song is probably accurate. I can still see no strong similarities with CE (maybe the lyrics - a little bit). But the song is solid. The three sections of the song are like one dramatic (or even tragic) story.

    And Mercy is a pleasure to listen to thanks to the great bass work and suprisingly powerful pre-chorus :)

  6. But why do they feel the need to have the Queen style vocals? It distracts from the rest of the song and gets boring very quickly. If I want to hear those vocals I'll listen to Queen...

     

    I was asking myself the same question at first. But now I can't imagine what would fit the song better than the Queen-esque vocals. The word "sinister" is a perfect description for that. And with all due respect to Queen, why should this style of vocal layering be necessarily referred to as that of Queen?

  7. By chance I decided to listen to Prelude from T2L and during the whole song I was feeling some Aftermath atmosphere. Just like Prelude is some sort of teaser or preview for Aftermath)

  8. ooh yeah, Glorious is an A-side with Invincible or something, am I right? can't remember tbh. Gallery at the end for me, perfect end to an album :)

     

    It was part of the Japanese edition of BH&R.

    So as not to be absolutely off-topic, I'm curious how The Globalist will be played live. Must be tricky to handle all those instrumental transitions :)

  9. This is basically the sex. I personally would also stick Glorious and Do We Need This instead of the Groove and Shine, and put The Gallery and Shrinking Universe in there but yeah it would make a good album :)

     

    I don't treat Glorious as a b-side. But surely it must make it to the above-mentioned album! Glorious is one of my favorite songs ever.

    The Gallery could be a wonderful opener that would create the mystical atmosphere for Futurism. And Do We Need This - I forgot about it, my fault :)

  10. I just thought about an album which would consist of the best Muse b-sides in my opinion.

  11. Dead Inside.

    Probably not the best opener of the album but the song definitely appeals to me. The guitar solo is short but fruitful and so much fun to play. Unlike many others I usually skip the last part of the song which I don't find that great. It's often compared to Madness..Well, I like Madness a little bit more.

    Psycho

    The riff came as no surprise but that doesn't make it less dynamic and powerful. It grew on me when I heard it live. Lately I've been listening to Psycho a lot. Yet the lyrics is awful. I try to not concentrate on it and just enjoy the riff.

    Mercy

    Strangely enough, Mercy was my favorite one the first time I heard it. What I like best about Mercy is the bass line. Four power chords by Matt in the chorus are simplistic but powerful.

    On the whole, I think that the song is pretty mediocre especially considering what the next two songs are.

    Reapers

    I don't care whether the riff is much inspired by AC/DC or whatever. I have goosebumps whenever I hear it. The only issue is that I prefer the live versions to the studio recording which is way too... is artificial the right word here? The live version of Reapers is incredibly cool. I agree that the parts of the song aren't connected in a musically logical way but IMO that helps express the nerve and drive of Reapers.

    A great song.

    The Handler

    Having heard Reapers, I thought: "Well, that must be the best song on the album. What can be better?".

    The Handler is the answer! It's better than all the songs on the last two albums. The riff is repetitive and pretty simple (as well as those in Psycho and Defector) but there's something about it that makes you listen to it over and over again as if it's the very first time. The inyourworld-ish bridge comes out of nowhere in my opinion and lasts a bit too long but the superb drums and bass make it really cool. The final part of the song is some sort of reward for us, Muse fans, and demonstrates the very best by Matt, Dom and Chris. The Handler is awe-inspiring.

    9,5/10

    Defector

    At first I coudn't listen to it. It took me a few days to get accustomed to this song after which it grew on me. Now I often find myself singing "Free, now I'm free..".

    It's like some sort of relief after the heavy mood created in the Handler. The riff is again repetitive but that's not as noticeable as in Psycho.

    When you listen to Defector after the Handler -- it seems better than it is by itself.

    Revolt

    Revolt is the absolute outsider among the songs that I would ever show to someone to make them fall in love with Muse.

    I would rate it pretty high were it a song by Big Time Rush. But it is not. I will never understand how on earth Fury became a B-side and Revolt made it to the album.

    Might be a good one to jump around to. The solo is decent. But that's not enough to make it a decent song.

    Aftermath

    An incredibly beautiful beginning, depressive atmosphere. The lyrics is finally not about Drones killing everyone. I associate it with Blackout - another moody song that I adore.

    The solo is emotional and I'm totally sure that it will be even better live. The song is amazing. No more words.

    The Globalist

    The main problem of the Globalist is that Matt talked too much about it lifting the level of our expectations. I expected the Globalist to be the strongest one on the album which it certainly isn't. The Morricone intro and the piano part are great. The middle part just doesn't fit. Suddenly starts - suddenly ends... I see very weak connection with the other parts of the Globalist.

    I would save the riff for another song that could replace Revolt or Drones.

    For the fantastically beautiful first part:

    Drones

    Frankly speaking, I don't know what to say about Drones. I treat it in the same way as Drill Sergeant, JFK. I hoped for a better final chord for the album.

    I did not say that. What I mean is that (in my humble opinion) it's no crime that several parts of the songs will be delegated to Morgan.

  13. Do you think Matt will be able to play all the guitar parts while singing? Or some of it be a Morgan job?

     

    Some of them seem quite subtly fiddly to play at the same time as singing.

     

    Even if so, I think that is absolutely OK considering that with every new album Muse songs are more and more problematic to be played live :)

  14. Had I not seen the name of the song before listening to it, I could've thought Matt is addressing some girl named Marcy:)

    Joking apart, the song is really catchy. And I like the contrast of Reapers coming right after Mercy :)

  15. Something to do with the ratio of lyrics inspired by real-world events to those by fictional characters, countries that don't exist and extinction events that will never happen.

     

     

     

    You are now aware that Panic Station's lyrics are a continuation of B&H.

     

     

    Well, at least these are the sources of inspiration for Bellamy. We might as well respect that. I personally don't care whether be it fictional characters/ events or not as long as it's performed by Muse - the quality of their music remains to be very high.

    FWIW, my favorites by Muse are their saddest and moodiest songs - one of them (a single teardrop is almost there) Hyper Chondriac Music has never even been played live.

  16. I don't think Muse is that deep anymore lol. Usually there are ways to read into a song other than at face value but not in the case of Muse's last 2 (possibly 3) albums.

     

    Why do so many people claim that Muse's last few albums are less deep? How do you define the "deepness" of an album?
