Thank you!

Funny that the interview was apparently made almost a year ago, and they decided to publish it now

Ah yes, that's why I was finding it confusing to read! I couldn't place it, especially the fact that Matt was thinking of going on stage in a "bird costume"!

I wonder if that was what turned out to be what we referred to as his chicken coat!

Oh dear!

Thanks for posting Natalia. :)

Haha this interview is all over the place. I lost the plot. And God it annoyed me that the journalist kept getting the name of the album wrong... But the thing that made me laugh the most was: "But even the most serious-minded people, and we are that, can’t be serious all of the time" right... The most seriousminded people...

P.S: Wow Matt seems to have changed a lot over the last year...

Do you think so? He seemed the same to me but it was interesting to get a bit more regarding inspiration for the music and performances, though I seem to remember that Matt said in a televised interview that he didn't know a lot about Genesis, so that sounds like an error. I remember it because I was like What??!!!?!?:chuckle: and had the urge to send him Selling England by the Pound. Actually I didn't think they were really into progressive rock.

And all that stuff about Hitler being like a rock artist is a little weird! But yeah he says that kind of euphoria can be produced in a non harmful way so that's okay.

Oh and I noticed both Chris and Dom said that thing about wanting to be the biggest band in the world.

I really enjoyed reading this, thanks for posting :)

Clearly the interview is out of date and the writer appears to have misinterpreted some of Matt's quotes. But I thought the parallels drawn were quite interesting.

One bit that made me do a double take:

"They sell stadiums out faster than Coldplay, their last album Resistance went to the top of the charts in 20 countries and even got to Number 3 in the States, and they are playing massive venues on their current tour (see theartsdesk’s review of their Wembley Stadium gig a couple of weeks ago: “awesome, dazzling, dizzying”) not to mention planning a ground-breaking tour of Eurasia, playing countries like Tajikistan that bands usually don’t get to play. "

Tajikistan ???

Now I know where I'm going to see Muse next year

That was also a year ago! I read then about planning an Eurasia tour in some letters circling among the promoters (including Sofia and Istanbul, in my case)... Those plans failed, unfortunately...

And that's such a shame, really. Realistically, Muse could do it if they wanted to. It would entail ditching the current Riefenstahl-esque stage setup in favour of something more stripped down of course, in order to fit in the venues and break even

It seems that they always come up with great ideas (playing off the beaten track countries, the boat thing, the setlist choices etc etc) only to then abandon them almost immediately.

I'm aware that some of these 'ideas' could be pisstakes but there is no reason they should be, IMO.

So....fingers crossed for Istanbul, Ashgabat, Tashkent, Ulanbaator, Bombay next year! I would love to see them do a rock-umentary about something like that. *dreams*

The interviewers note on Springsteen caught my attention: "Muse are the other end of the spectrum to the likes of Bruce Springsteen or Manu Chao." I don't know Manu Chao but I've been a fan of Sprinsteen since I was 11 or 12, and in addition to at least one person in the world liking the music of both Muse and Sprinsteen, I think there is something else in common in their music, namely the grandiosity, or massiveness, or maybe pompousity (sorry I'm not good describing music style even in my own language). Well ok the guy probably meant the live performances, but I don't think the visual show means that much, both make intensive shows.

And about Hitler, I remember from school that Nazi's were actually quite good in influencing the crowd in their events and Hitler's speeches, and I suppose that is what rock bands at least try to do too.

Thanks for the interview though, the ones like this are nice to read even when they are old. They had updated the reference to Wembley show to make it fresh (is this some sort of concern for environment, recycling old interviews? :p)
