Excerpts from LA Times interview with Matt in August 2022:

Q:  Will of the People suggests it hasn’t left you terribly optimistic about the future.

A:  It depends what your definition of optimism is. To me there’s a fighting spirit in the music, which is a form of optimism. It’s like the moment in “Rocky” when Adrian tells Rocky to win.

Q:  Do you think it’s clear to listeners who you’re fighting? In the new song 'Compliance' you’re singing sarcastically about people falling into line and doing as they’re told. It could be interpreted as an anti-woke anthem.

AI never thought about it that way. I thought about it in terms of the rising authoritarianism that we’re now seeing is a real thing — Trump in this country, but also Putin and the China situation. These ideologies, I feel like we kind of tested the waters in the 20th century and realized that fascism and communism are both just absolute disasters and that we don’t need to go near that stuff ever again. And yet it’s emerging.

Q:  What’s your reaction to that?

A:  I have an anti-authoritarian nature. My parents say that when I was a young child I was never very good at being told what to do. I don’t like the idea of vast centralized power that’s very far away from where I live...So the resistance to someone deciding how I should live who has no idea what my day-to-day life is — I can understand it, even though there’s a risk of it being hijacked by more extremist factions that have gone down roads I don’t agree with.

Kudos and massive respect to Matt and MUSE for rehearsing and adding the new Abso tracks to the four arena shows this week !!

Butterflies & Hurricanes, Space Dementia, and Stockholm Syndrome were just played at the AO Arena in Manchester.  The last time these three songs were on the same setlist was at the two V Festival gigs in the UK in August 2008.  One month earlier that same year, six songs (Hysteria, TIRO, AP, SS, B&H and Fury) from Abso were played along with Space Dementia at a concert in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The middle synth sections of this brilliant piano track written in the key of F♯ minor and the drum intro of this rarely played TR track were both inspired by what song which topped the singles chart in Ireland, Belgium, and the Netherlands and spent four weeks at #2 on the British singles chart in 1981?

Apocalypse Please

Guiding Light

Vienna by Ultravox with lead vocals by Midge Ure

*$105 million estimated average gross generated from each of the last five album era world tours (2009-2023) and $50 million estimated revenue from shows during the first four album releases (1999-2008).  As noted in an earlier post about 30% of concert grosses are earned by the artist after all stage and venue costs and commissions are paid and before taxes.

This and this is criminal 👀

I knew about Spotify streams and the likes (it is still horror!) but gigs? I mean, the artists mostly wrote the music, do the performance etc. they should earn more than 30% minus taxes!

Absolution

Songs written for the album possibly foreshadowing geopolitical events:

AP, TIRO, Hysteria, SfA, RBS, Fury, Soldier's Poem [Dropped from Abso but reworked and added to BHaR]

Number of singles released from the band's third studio album and peak positions reached on the Official Albums chart in the UK:

6 - Stockholm Syndrome (Over 20K downloads); Time Is Running Out #8; Hysteria #17; Sing for Absolution #16; Apocalypse Please #10 on the first OCC downloads singles chart with 70p of each download donated to charitable organisation Oxfam; and Butterflies and Hurricanes #14

Chart positions:

#200  May 2004 - First appearance on the Billboard 200 albums chart after its delayed release in the States. It debuted at #13 on the Heatseekers albums chart a month earlier selling about 3K copies.  It spent a total of 68 weeks on this survey because it never climbed higher than #107 on the Billboard 200.  It was certified Gold and Platinum in the States in 2007 and 2016, respectively.

#74 July 2010 - Last appearance on the Official Albums chart in the UK in its 85th week on this tally. It should re-enter the album charts in November 2023 with the remastered XX anniversary box set release.  The band's last box set Origin of Muse debuted at #2 on the Vinyl albums chart, #50 on the Album sales chart, and #70 on the Official Albums chart in the UK in December 2019 according to the OCC.

Album cover artwork:

Dom found Storm Thorgerson's  website, liked a rough, and decided to contact him.

“We met with Dom and agreed that we should try and render our pencil sketch as a real event: shadows of flying people spread across the ground as if cast by a squadron of flying craft, magical beings swooping over the Earth to the amazement of the viewer on the ground looking up. it is a though he is witnessing some mystical event, a visitation of strange beings, which can only be inferred by us, the viewers of the picture, because all we see is shadows, whereas the viewer of the picture seems them for real, gliding serenely overhead. He is deeply moved and experiences a kind of absolution as one might in the presence of a such a miraculous sight."

Location Storm chose to take these pictures

"A chalk pit [near London] was deemed appropriate since Muse had spent much of their teenage years hanging out in the chalk pits near their Devon homes."

Taylor Swift watched MUSE perform track 'WOTP' in Düsseldorf, Germany in November 2022 at the MTV EMAs.  Matt attended one of Taylor Swift's 1989 tour concerts at the Staples Center in Los Angeles in August 2015.  Taylor Swift and MUSE both also performed at the 2012 MTV EMAs in Frankfurt, Germany.  When the Eras Tour concludes, Taylor Swift will have likely grossed about $3 billion dollars in ticket sales revenue from all of her six concert tours from 2009-2024 which may rank her as the Greatest Touring Artist of All Time possibly surpassing the Rolling Stones which have generated over $2.6 billion in concert grosses in their legendary career since the 1960s to the present.

Universal Melodies was reportedly the first proposed title of the band's third studio album Absolution.  Some of the songs were written at a loft in Hackney in northeast London.  The first two tracks recorded for the album were Butterflies and Hurricanes and Blackout.

Apocalypse from the Greek means to reveal or uncover. It is often associated with biblical end times.

Early versions of six Abso tracks (Hysteria, AP, TSP, B&H, SS, and Fury) made their live debut at two gigs in Russia in May 2002.

Several promo videos directed by Tom Kirk were made for track Apocalypse Please:  A live performance from the 2004 Glastonbury gig and this one below

*This outro features a somewhat altered rendition of Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2 in Eb by Frédéric Chopin and additional sounds such as children laughing, sounds of machine guns, explosions, and ending with the sound of a jet fighter flying overhead. In an interview with Absolute Radio, Matt said during the recording of United States of Eurasia + Collateral Damage, they wanted to have a lot of warfare-type sound effects in addition to the kids playing and the jet taking off. "We wanted to go record sounds of real warfare... we wanted to go to the Middle East but it turns out that's not a good idea is it?".

Your post on 20 June in the Gigs thread

"It was almost sold out I think, 20.000 people were there."

You made a very good estimate of the number of concertgoers at this venue.  The Wiener Neustadt show was the highest-attended and highest-grossing gig for MUSE in Austria surpassing the number of fans who attended arena shows in Graz  (14,365)and Vienna (15,304) in 2019 and 2016 respectively.

You made a very good estimate of the number of concertgoers at this venue.  The Wiener Neustadt show was the highest-attended and highest-grossing gig for MUSE in Austria surpassing the 15,000 fans who attended arena shows in Graz and Vienna in 2019 and 2015.
