Q:  Will of the People suggests it hasn’t left you terribly optimistic about the future.

A:  It depends what your definition of optimism is. To me there’s a fighting spirit in the music, which is a form of optimism. It’s like the moment in “Rocky” when Adrian tells Rocky to win.

Q:  Do you think it’s clear to listeners who you’re fighting? In the new song 'Compliance' you’re singing sarcastically about people falling into line and doing as they’re told. It could be interpreted as an anti-woke anthem.

A:  I never thought about it that way. I thought about it in terms of the rising authoritarianism that we’re now seeing is a real thing — Trump in this country, but also Putin and the China situation. These ideologies, I feel like we kind of tested the waters in the 20th century and realized that fascism and communism are both just absolute disasters and that we don’t need to go near that stuff ever again. And yet it’s emerging.

Q:  What’s your reaction to that?

A:  I have an anti-authoritarian nature. My parents say that when I was a young child I was never very good at being told what to do. I don’t like the idea of vast centralized power that’s very far away from where I live...So the resistance to someone deciding how I should live who has no idea what my day-to-day life is — I can understand it, even though there’s a risk of it being hijacked by more extremist factions that have gone down roads I don’t agree with.

Kudos and massive respect to Matt and MUSE for rehearsing and adding the new Abso tracks to the four arena shows this week !!

Butterflies & Hurricanes, Space Dementia, and Stockholm Syndrome were just played at the AO Arena in Manchester.  The last time these three songs were on the same setlist was at the two V Festival gigs in the UK in August 2008.  One month earlier that same year, six songs (Hysteria, TIRO, AP, SS, B&H and Fury) from Abso were played along with Space Dementia at a concert in Buenos Aires, Argentina. 

The middle synth sections of this brilliant piano track written in the key of F♯ minor and the drum intro of this rarely played TR track were both inspired by what song which topped the singles chart in Ireland, Belgium, and the Netherlands and spent four weeks at #2 on the British singles chart in 1981?

I knew about Spotify streams and the likes (it is still horror!) but gigs? I mean, the artists mostly wrote the music, do the performance etc. they should earn more than 30% minus taxes!

Taylor Swift watched MUSE perform track 'WOTP' in Düsseldorf, Germany in November 2022 at the MTV EMAs.  Matt attended one of Taylor Swift's 1989 tour concerts at the Staples Center in Los Angeles in August 2015.  Taylor Swift and MUSE both also performed at the 2012 MTV EMAs in Frankfurt, Germany.  When the Eras Tour concludes, Taylor Swift will have likely grossed about $3 billion dollars in ticket sales revenue from all of her six concert tours from 2009-2024 which may rank her as the Greatest Touring Artist of All Time possibly surpassing the Rolling Stones which have generated over $2.6 billion in concert grosses in their legendary career since the 1960s to the present.

Universal Melodies was reportedly the first proposed title of the band's third studio album Absolution.  Some of the songs were written at a loft in Hackney in northeast London.  The first two tracks recorded for the album were Butterflies and Hurricanes and Blackout.

Apocalypse from the Greek means to reveal or uncover. It is often associated with biblical end times.

Early versions of six Abso tracks (Hysteria, AP, TSP, B&H, SS, and Fury) made their live debut at two gigs in Russia in May 2002.

"It was almost sold out I think, 20.000 people were there."

You made a very good estimate of the number of concertgoers at this venue.  The Wiener Neustadt show was the highest-attended and highest-grossing gig for MUSE in Austria surpassing the number of fans who attended arena shows in Graz  (14,365)and Vienna (15,304) in 2019 and 2016 respectively.

Cooool! I just searched for the numbers, 14.500 attended in Graz (sold out!!) .. but how many in Vienna? About 12.000 ?? Btw, the gig in Vienna was in 2016, my first one 😎 They play at „Rock in Vienna in 2015

UK Albums Chart Update

"Muse’s Absolution looks to return to the Top 40 for the first time since 2004 thanks to a 20th anniversary reissue."

It currently occupies position #27 based on weekend sales and streams.  It sold several hundred copies at the Amazon retailers in the UK and the States.
