Longest chart spans by father and son on The Billboard Hot 100 ranked by father's first appearance and son's latest chart appearance:

George and Matt Bellamy (1962-2012)*

Bob and Jakob Dylan (1965-2000)**

Ricky and twin sons Matthew and Gunnar Nelson (1958-1991)

Bob and sons Ziggy and Damian Marley (1976-2005)

Julio and Enrique Iglesias (1984-2012)

John and Julian Lennon (1964-1989)

Will and Jaden Smith (1988-2011)

Dean and Dino Martin (1958-1968)

*Besides the #1 "Telstar" George also charted with "Ridin' the Wind" which he wrote for The Tornados in early 1963; Matt and Muse have charted with "Madness," "Neutron Star Collision (Love is Forever)," and its highest charting single to date "Uprising" which peaked at #37 and spent 20 weeks on the chart and has sold over 2 million digital downloads to date.

**Matt Bellamy and Jakob Dylan are on the latest Triple A airplay chart dated September 8, 2012 with their bands Muse and the Wallflowers, respectively. Both artists also have new albums due out on October 2.

"Madness" moves up from #12 to #7 on the latest Mediabase Alternative Songs chart. It also sold another 20K downloads. Except for the first single from Mumford & Sons, all the songs ahead of it on the chart are showing decreased airplay.

The new CD from Barbra Streisand will be released on October 9 and will therefore not compete against T2L. The band's SNL appearance on October 6 should help boost sales for both the album and the single. The audience for SNL should be about seven million. Pre-order sales of T2L at iTunes are estimated at 5-10k.

Will WMG promote "Madness" to pop radio?

Veteran bands like Linkin Park, Green Day and Coldplay find it difficult now to enter the top 30 on the Top 40 pop chart in the USA while several years ago they would easily make it into the top ten. New acts like Gotye and Fun. though both crossed over and hit #1 at pop radio here. But since Coldplay and Muse gross over £75m on their latest album arena/stadium tours they probably don't care that much. Chart position is important to record labels however.

"Madness" ascends to #6 on the latest Billboard alternative songs chart and reaches a career high at #18 on the Triple A airplay chart. The track dropped a few positions to #95 on the Hot 100 but should climb again next week with the release of the official video. "Madness" however does something that "Uprising" and "NSC" could not accomplish. It stayed on the big chart in its second week of release.

Seems like Madness is doing better in the USA than in the UK.

Just wish I could hear it more on the radio than the stuff that actually does get played!:stunned:

tbh, it doesn't surprise me that it's doing so well over here vs the UK. I think because of its pop roots, our radios/ears are more inclined to it vs British airwaves. but that could be a load of bs.

No connections whatever with the entertainment industry or the music business. Just a fan of the band. I guess you could call it pro bono promo. I started the 53rd Grammy Awards thread two years ago because the only media person who thought Muse had a chance of being nominated was Paul Grein, a former Billboard writer. Happy to see they were finally nominated and won their first Grammy.

The latest news about Madness:

It moves up a few positions to #91 on the Hot 100 chart in its third week of release. Airplay increased and sales stayed about the same as the previous week. It should reach the 100k download sales threshold next week and will contend for #1 on the Alternative Songs chart in the next couple of weeks at the time T2L is released. The Lumineers and Mumford & Sons are battling for the top slot now.

Also, it is possible Matt and Kate will duplicate a feat next week that Chris and Gwyneth did chart wise in December 2010. Stay tuned.

What did they do in 2010?

Thanx for running this thread.

I presume a coldplay and glee song

Correct!

Coldplay's "Christmas Lights" and The Glee Cast featuring Gwyneth Paltrow with cover songs "Forget You" and "Singin' in the Rain/Umbrella" charted at the same time for two weeks in December 2010 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Digital Songs charts.

"Madness" and The Glee Cast featuring Kate Hudson covering "Americano/Dance Again" could chart concurrently on one or more Billboard charts if each sells at least 25k digital copies. Both tracks are ranked in the top 100 on the iTunes chart in the USA. The former will accumulate airplay points as well but the latter will chart based on sales alone from Wednesday through Sunday so it is not a certainty.

Jay-Z and Beyonce and perhaps Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony have achieved this chart feat in the past.

P.S. Last week a modern rock station in Seattle, WA gave "Madness" the most airplay, about 11 daily spins. So far it has not crossed over to Top 40 radio (adult or teen).

muse s’amuse, thank you so much for all your great info!! I know most people here could care less about all this chart talk, but I’m part of that minority who looks forward to your updates!

Got a question for you-

So in Mediabase (radio airplay chart), I see Madness is #3 on Alternative & just 40 spins away from #1, which it’ll get to in a week or less, assuming current #1 & 2 don’t magically get new momentum. It’s also doing pretty well in Adult Alternative at #12 & climbing. Do you think Madness will be marketed to pop stations, & if so, when? Actually, I mean HotAC – that’s such a huge market & where I think Madness would fit perfectly.
