kreisky
I still don't really see the point of that guitar. It looks ridiculous and it can't do anything he couldn't do with a normal Manson.
essee
I usually don't mind matt's crazy ideas, but this is just too much. It looks completely ridiculous.

Crowella
Just by looking at what he is doing though with the fretless, he might as well just be using a ribbon controller similar to the Bomber Manson to control the sounds. I like the sounds he used on the fretless though. They sounded interesting.

Impulse 101
That is by far the coolest of all Matt's guitars. No shit. JT PS Guthrie Govan playing a fretless.
Lexical_Whale
That is by far the coolest of all Matt's guitars. No shit. JT PS Guthrie Govan playing a fretless. Very cool video. Shame the same can't be said of the usual kind of youtube commentators: the advantage of a fretless guitar, cost/benefit wise? I'll give you a little hint: you don't have frets that wear out, so this saves you money in the long run. Yeah, the reason isn't that it's for a different style of playing or that you get a different sound from a fretless it's to save a few quid because there's less parts to get worn down and replaced... Impulse 101
Fretless guitar have a small but growing fan base. Guys like Guthrie, Ron Thal and Ed Degenaro are doing a lot to use them in mainstream rock settings. They are all about unique sounds and trying to play a chord while keeping all of the notes intonated is a real adventure. JT
Lexical_Whale
Ron Thal (via Chinese Democracy) is the only person I'd ever heard playing one before you posted that video. I'll have to check out some more of his stuff and the other guys too: I'm embarassingly ignorant in terms of current guitarists and the like. Seems like you can get some pretty creative and anarchic lead styles out of them which can only be a good thing IMO.
Impulse 101
Everyone should know who Guthrie Govan is (I know, no one does) He has amazing chops, Shredder, Fusion, Jazz, you name it he plays it. But what kills me is the musicality in his hands. He gets all of his tones from his guitar and amp, old school but totally killing it. It's important to try new stuff like this, it's how music progresses. Besides, eventually you'll get too old to piss of the parents with the noise so you have to do it to your peers. Phil.
interesting - i wonder what that switch below the bridge does. he seems to be preferring P90s now. I would assume that the switch is for choosing which "guitar" is outputting a signal. In that pic he is playing both at the same time and the switch is in the middle position. james90
makes sense i guess there's also the pickup switch which is on the top left of the body (or at least i think that's the pickup switch) i assume it's a rotary type thing, which controls all four pickups
Phil.
LOLWTF? those knobs look pretty gay anyway, brushed aluminium + mirror top is like trying to go out wearing a pink dress and a purple scarf, and I for one, cannot pull that off... Edit: Perhaps that top knob where the killswitch would usually be located is just a tone knob for the fretless? it would make sense I think, individual tone knobs for each of the two guitars, but one single volume knob so they are both at the same volume? I think it only has one volume, so would only have one signal, meaning you would want both of the guitars to be outputting the same volume so they both come through clear? Jesus the wiring in that thing must be a motherbitch haha Edit Numero Duo: Okay now i see there are two outputs... I am 17, and what is this? Jujubean
Heavy, bulky, flashy - yes. Worth watching a skilled artist play it like a master despite all that - hell yes. I'm sorry but I geeked out on this guitar in a couple of other threads. I'm impressed that he decided to use it, despite all the obvious drawbacks. Moving around with it must of been a real trial on stage. I've only watched one clip with sucky sound quality. Was the fretless rigged to sound synth? Seriously, you guys should be applauding him for bringing it on stage, because I've tried a harp-guitar once and barely survived. Doubling up, changing styles, moving around the bulk...it takes formidable skills to pull it off and still look like you're having fun.
