Muse peaked at Absolution?

Hmm..I guess mine would be something like this..

Origin of Symmetry

The Resistance

Showbiz/Absolution

Black Holes and Revelations

Hullabaloo

BH&R has many of my favourite songs, but it falls short as an album. Absolution and Showbiz change around depending on my mood.

Absolution is still my favourite Muse album, but The Resistance is definitely up there for me. BH&R was a real stinker though.

i just dont get why people hate BH&R so much... and even worse.. i dont get how people can actually call that a POP album..

here is why

1.- Knights of Cydonia: Other bands would kill to write prog rock at this level and still manage to pull it off live

2.- Take a Bow: This song is simply a song originaly written for strings orchestra.. so.. ORCHESTRA ELECTRONIC OVERLAY.. i mean.. even the term sounds cool

3.- Hoodoo (live) : This and Ruled by Secrecy have to be MUSE's best piano songs ever...

4.- Assassin: MUSE's heaviest song up to date.. yeah.. definetely pop

5.- Exo-Politics: Written on Absolution Era... No one would complain about it if they had put it on that album...

6.- Soldiers Poem: Dignity of classic baroque and with a Queen touch of harmonics..

7.- Map of the Problematique: All fierce electronica fans i know love this song

8.- City of Delusion: In my opinion... a MASTERPIECE... on of the most underrated MUSE songs ever

9.-Invincible: The lyrics and solo make me cry everytime. (This song helped my acheive something very important in my life)

10.- SMBH and STARLIGHT: While still being top quality songs.. SMBH trenched on twilight and MUSE fans refused it... Starlight got too much radio play.. These two songs are the reason why people think this album is shit... BUT I STILL CANT UNDERSTAND HOW THEY CALL ALL THE OTHER NINE SONGS POP.... its a stupid thing to say..

I believe Absolution era was a gr8 mosh/classical balance for LIVE muse after OOS... in which.. yeah... Matt's singing is out of this world... and it was fun watching them crash everything.. but that would just have grown old.. But i think MUSE's best live performances took place in the year of 2006 and first half of 2007.. in which Matt still managed to get Showbiz's falsetto right on and also because his voice had changed enough for songs like Plug in Baby to become a little (LOTS) more stadium rock...

Ahem. Deadstar?

For the record, I don't think Black Holes & Revelations is as shit as its made out to be. Take A Bow/Map/Assassin/City of Delusion/Hoodoo/Knights are all quality tracks in my mind (City of Delusion is probably the best track on the album, followed closely by Take A Bow). The rest are average though - but even then, I'd wouldn't rate it below Showbiz...

City Of Delusion, Take A Bow and Map Of The Problematique are A-grade songs.

Assassin was ruined though by cutting all the epic beef out of it, Knights Of Cydonia is just a mess that even live, doesn't sound cohesive at all to me (but then, the riff saves the day) and Hoodoo whilst being a good song, gets nowhere near their previous piano classics like Ruled By Secrecy and Space Dementia.

Also, the production/mastering of the album ruins any dynamisn those songs once had, they all sound so horrifically flat and one-dimensional.

Actually, since hearing The Resistance, I can finally understand all the beef people had with the production of Black Holes. Knights of Cydonia is basically based around that single riff + some rock out moments live  (I love the Man with a Harmonica addition though -- and the crowd singing the intro riff is a fantastic live moment).

De-beefed Assassin was a shame though :(

And for the actual thread question,

I don't think Muse have peaked in terms of musical creativity. The Resistance is proof that they still have the ability to write & produce a quality album (with a fair amount of experimentation - maybe a little too much for one album imo though).

And while the 01-04 period was probably their most accomplished period in terms of live performances, you have to consider their progression over the years. They're a different live band - they're a lot more refined & polished.

I don't doubt they're still one of the best live acts around though.

The Muse sound of 2001-2003 is what makes me like them. If they were a band with just the last two albums I doubt i'd like them even half as much as I do now.

Listened to BHaR for a change today, Starlight really is as boring as I remember it

I rated Black Holes a light higher a year ago that I do now. I dunno, after Knights and Supermassive, it's s truggle to think of any standout tracks. Hoodoo's just boring, Assassin is a poor man's stocky, City of Delusion is a poor man's Best, Take a Bow is good but that boardy pwned it completely with his symphonic reworking. I'm sure there were more good tracks on that album. :erm:

very simple answer- comparing it with their older stuff it really is dissapointing.. that is for a person who really enjoys their early stuff.

and with OOS goggles on it seems pop-ish.

changed enough for songs like Plug in Baby to become a little (LOTS) more stadium rock...

off topic but i've concluded i don't like stadium rock much :( i dont want muse to be like u2 :'(.. really dont like u2

hope guiding light isn't played often.. or they're no longer gonna be my favourite band.. and that just depresses me so much..

here's hoping for an extra awesome next album.

that's quite impressive. don't agree with the awesome ratings though.

You DREW those? Wow. I'm really impressed by the Showbiz art! On-topic: I don't really agree with your rankings though. :p

Haha thanks.. I was rather proud of the showbiz one :p. Let's just say I was incredibly bored and got carried away. :$

My rankings fluctuate quite a lot and honestly I have no idea where The Resistance stands in all of that because I still haven't really.. digested it, lol. So I just sort of stuck it in the middle. But the others are pretty much accurate for me

Although I'm not sure why I made the bottom read "not awesome" because they're all some level of awesome to me.
