Its got some 'choons on it.

Recess

Forced In :awesome:

Shrinking Universe :D

Hyper Chondriac Music :) but also :'(

Haha. Indeed. HCM makes me happy-sad ish.

I sort of miss the mindfeck side to Muse which is present on Forced In and the Gallery.

I only really dislike Shine off that disc and that's still better than a good part of Showbiz. :)

Same here, I think that's why people like mk ultra, because (for me anyway) it has that retro mind feck effect that said songs have.

I think the Muse journey could be compared to walking out of the Andes after a plane crash. Just when you think you have reached the last peak, you look forward and there is another peak right in front of you ;)

(BTW the reason the plane crashed was that it was being flown by Simon Cowell who wouln't know a peak if he flew into one.........which he did.....in the analagy)..

I can't say that muse have peaked yet. For them to peak assumes that they have only been working towards one particular goal, but with the range of music that they have released, how can we compare? Besides, my favourite album changes depending on my mood. People always say that Showbiz was the lesser album, but how many people have listened to it in the last 6 weeks? For a benchmark album, I'd say that they'd set themselves some pretty high standards.... Anyone agree?

FTW!!!!!! Best live performance I've EVER SEEEN!!!! :D :D I really can't see that changing... unless they perform the most immense, insane, out-of-this-world orchestral performance of Exogenesis imaginable... like, literally, on a spacecraft or Mars or something! :awesome::pope: lol!

Ahem, but yeah... I agree to an extent. I think the 2003-2004 era was Muse at their prime for DEFS, especially live... their sound was loud, heavy and just brilliant; they had their immense stage presence and the occasional outburst of craziness without being too shroom-like (lol), and the whole 'concept' of the Apocalypse/end of the world madness etc surrounding the album was brilliant and the whole thing just fit!... plus, they became more 'user-friendly' with songs like TIRO and SFA at that point. Then, their defining moment hit with Glastonbury 2004... that's an almost famous 'landmark' Muse gig that put them firmly on the map as one of the best live British bands! ANNND, it was 04 when I really got into Muse, so that era has personal significance.

I think they seemed more loose and less constricted in their performances back then as well... before they started to dress like emo teenage girls (yes, you Dom!), boyband members (Maffoo and his red suits!) and Mexicans (Pedro!) ... although all of that was quite fun, haha!

So, yeah, Abso is my fave era for all the above reasons, and they were at their peak, so to speak! But, it's not my fave album. I don't think it marks the 'peak' of Muse's brilliance. I'm of the 'OoS is almighty genius' opinion, and I really doubt that'll ever change. Abso is still firmly up there, but, while I never thought any future Muse album would even match up to Abso's level, The Resistance is also really high up on my list in the album stakes... only a teeeny bit behind it. They really impressed me with this album, it's just redefined them! Anyways, for me it's: OoS>Abso>TR>BH&R>Showbiz! :yesey:

Well said.. all of it! Best expression of my thoughts on the topic.

I agree, Absolution is definitely my favorite. For some reason, when I think Muse, I think Absolution. Like their essence is found in that album and everything else is just a variation of it. But then again, that's probably just because Abso was the first album I heard and it was what made me like them in the first place.

i'd say they've just matured and become more refined.

i think they are past the stage of making stripped back 3 piece albums full of riffs to jump around to because they aren't 20 anymore and want to challenge themselves. as for the live shows, i think they want to make them as polished and professional as they can. although it's not as fun to watch, i guess it's the direction they want to go in. they obviously don't want to be locked down as a mosh band for teenagers.

but why not :(

silly muse.

is there anyone here who would rather see a performance from HAARP to a performance from Hullaballoo?

(the real life version, not the DVD)

Hullaballoo disc 1 actually rates above BHAR and Showbiz for me. I quite enjoy it

I love Hullaballoo. That mindfuck aspect is probably what makes me miss old Muse the most.

I try to avoid ranking the albums. Showbiz has a special place in my heart, so I'd feel weirdly guilty about putting it last.

for a second when muse were on later with jool's holland and he just looked so tired, and the guitar sounded pretty weak i was really just yearning for him to smash up his lovely new manson  on international TV, would've made my life... and most probably, the newspapers.

People don't really hate on Showbiz, they might consider it a bit weak but thats generally all.

People hate on BHaR because there were such high expectations after OoS/Dead Star-In Your World/Absolution and it largely failed to meet them.
