Furygirl Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 The bassline is quite cool and difinitetly adds to the song (mk ultra) but I much prefer the basslines in USOE, Uprising, Resistance ect. That bassline in Resistance is almost (but not quite) enough to make me like it better than US OR MK Ultra. I just love it.
armedwithromance Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 Ahhhh hard one... hmmm probably MK ULTRA.... but i'll probably change my mind in the morning..
Veronica_cy Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 At the monent I think I like Unnatural Selection a bit more. It's so hard to decide. 11 minutes of sheer brilliance.
Gemsy Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 MK Ultra just about wins... because of 03:11
Mozza Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 MK Ultra just about wins... because of 03:11 Riff!
Hopix Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Riff! Erm no? It's the breaking through bit isn't it?
agg25 Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 I love how influenced and diverse Unnatural Selection really is. I'm not saying these influences are bad, but this song acts as a homage to several great bands of the past and the OoS/Absolution era of Muse. Judging by the extended, 5.1 version of the song: - Organ intro slightly reminiscent of Megalomania, the only other Muse song with a prominent organ - That small Queen explosion after the intro, with a very Brian May-esque soound - New Born-esque riff - The energy of The Small Print packed into the verse - Similarities to Thoughts of Dying Atheist in the chorus - Pink Floyd/The Mars Volta interlude + solo - Metallica outro! The thing is, the song remains cohesive in the transitions, and packs a punch. Not the best song on The Resistance, but a wonderful addition that pays tribute to, well, music. I think you summed up the song well, heard all those influences as well.
drawakangaroo Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 MK Ultra, by miles. I just don't really like US for some reason. Probably because of the vocals.
BLlSS Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 Niether, but if I had to, MK ULTRA. It's like Muse sat down and said "lets make 2 songs that are similarish to New Born and Plug In Baby and then pretend the albums like Origin Of Symmetry, the fans would love that. And lets add a shit old style jam in one." Rant over.
Banksy. Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 The bassline is quite cool and difinitetly adds to the song (mk ultra) but I much prefer the basslines in USOE, Uprising, Resistance ect. Bassline in USOE is actually really badass.
Travis III Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 MK Ultra. US is a bit too polished. I think the production style suits the other songs on TR very well, but US should have had a rawer sound.
Tofu Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 I think US is much better live…but on the album MK Ultra is the more exciting of the two. US did sound too polished on album and somehow unexciting and too long. Live, though…

diamond_writer Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 I'm gonna say Unnatural Selection. It's super hard to decide,though.
drawakangaroo Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 MK Ultra. US is a bit too polished. I think the production style suits the other songs on TR very well, but US should have had a rawer sound. Yeah, that might be why I don't like it.
Luigi. Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 Unnatural Selection,it was fantastic live.
MartinSM Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 I love both, but I'm going for MK ULTRA. Unnatural Selection is just a recycled New Born with simple, obvious lyrics and a breakdown that is amazing live but does absolutely nothing on the album. I have to agree with everyone saying it's too polished and a little too long on the album. It's almost as if they were trying too hard to pack as many influences as possible in, both other artists and their own back catalogue, and it's far too easy to see. It took me a while to get into MK, but it's easily on eof my favourite Muse songs. My favourite on the album behind Exogenesis. It's everything I'd want a hard Muse song to be. I've probably been a bit unfairly harsh on US, but both songs are epic, even more so live, and they make up the best passage on the album excluding the three parts of Exogenesis, but MK is my favourite.
Gohenko Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 On the album, MK Ultra wins. Live, Unnatural Selection wins.
RainfallResistance Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 Both songs are great, but atm I like MK better. US is an awesome song, although I'm not really fond of the organ in the beginning. The guitar rocks big time though. But for now, MK Ultra for the win!
