From School Library Journal The compilers have selected more than 2000 books set in the 13-state region and have included intelligent and interesting annotations for each one. The organization allows readers to search for a book in a number of different ways. The titles are listed alphabetically by author. An appendix lists all books and authors by grade levels; in addition, there are two indexes, one for author, title, illustrator and a second for subject matter. The annotations are thorough, yet succinct, making use of previously published reviews from sources such as the Horn Book Guide, Booklist, and School Library Journal.
