Izzy Posted August 25, 2010 Share Posted August 25, 2010 I've liked this song from the very beginning and now, after I've heard it live last Saturday, I like it even more - it's much better live though Guiding Light is about a person cheating on their partner. - her pure heart stumbled into him & now crumbles in his hands - she left him so he can't hurt her anymore - he is loved by numbers of groupies - it's making him numb so he's losing life's wonders - he & his girlfriend touch like strangers detached because they both know he's been screwing around - he hopes for the best but has no guiding light to stop himself acting this way what ? When a man feels he has let his partner down , not been there for her (Pure hearts stumble In my hands, they crumble ) Matt had been reading 1984 and for the first time saw the relationship and love story in the book. It made him look at his own life and relationship (this is just my feeling by the way ) (Loved by numbers You're losing life's wonder ) when you are famous and loved by numbers,as in numbers of fans, you can push aside without meaning to, the one thing that's life's wonder. Two people in love. By spending so much time away from his partner he was losing that relationship that he found in the 1984 book. Matt was becoming aware that he was not putting in the time he felt he should have done in his own relationship. (Touch like strangers detached I can't feel you anymore ) over time they had become more like strangers (The sunshine trapped in our hearts It could rise again ) this is saying that it could work if they both wanted it to (But I'm lost, crushed, cold and confused With no guiding light left inside ) how I think we all feel when a relationship is falling apart . I feel this song was about the falling apart of his relationship . So to me its a very sad and deep song. Now before anyone starts the “how do you know how he feels “ .Well I don't.
